I'm trying out #iamb as a terminal client for #matrix and... it works! As in, it actually is serviceable and is able to decrypt past messages and makes sense! https://iamb.chat/ I'm excited.
Introduction - iamb documentat... -
Sure, #elinks isn't built for the modern web, but it serves a purpose. I use #aerc for email, #senpai for irc, #iamb for matrix chat, #slrn for newsgroups and message boards, #ncspot for Spotify, #mpg123 for local media or online radio, and #rbw for my bitwarden client. I really don't need much else. It's not a machine I rely on for serious tasks, but it's covered most of my daily needs. Best of all, without a GUI, it's blazing fast!
I've been enjoying some time on #gopher and #gemini as well.

@ulyssa I'm trying #iamb the terminal #Matrix client and wanted to say you did a great work with E2E encryption key exchange, it works great !
Being a "vi" addict I've to say I don't really see a chat client requiring or benefitting form the same experience of a text editor but it was a fun idea (I prefer readline mode for line-oriented test, while if I have to write long messages I prefer just delegating that to $EDITOR [being vi in my case] and take back the edited buffer)
-
@pmidden Then there's the "official" #Element. And the console #iamb.
I look in there myself sometimes and it seems that most clients don't care. Others don't like that the main alternative is written in Rust :rust:. Well the vulnerability is kind of hard to exploit and you can use broken ones. At your own risk, of course. -

only realized just now that https://iamb.chat/ merged and released that SSO PR a while ago! 😍 #matrix #iamb

I can't answer the first, but for the latter, IRC is still wonderful, but if you want encryption, you might look into XMPP or Matrix, if you haven't tried those.
There are some pretty lightweight matrix servers you can self-host, if you're wanting to, and there are some great lightweight GUI clients like #FluffyChat, #NeoChat, and #Nheko, and at least one really good TUI client, #iamb.
But I honestly feel like #XMPP is the under-utilized option.

Ok, https://iamb.chat is a seriously cool command-line matrix client.
God knows what the 600+ #rust dependencies are for, but #YOLO
(Come at me, #rustbros. I actually kinda like your language, but YOU have to be the one to look yourself in the mirror and say "Yes, I shipped a *command-line* utility that had 600 dependencies" and somehow not break down into tears or manic laughter. #ERMAGHERD)

I was a gomuks user in the past, so recently when setting up Matrix again I decided to try https://iamb.chat and I love it.
It has a very minimal UI. You can set up a layout, exit and by default it will remember it.
Controls are vim-like all the way to macros. You can have tabs for things like rooms, DMs, the room list, and you can further split tabs into panes.
After tweaking the space taken by the usernames on left side of chat, I now have a compact Matrix monitor on my terminal.

An interesting project to keep your eye on is #ElementX
https://element.io/labs/element-xAnd I just discovered #iamb, a #matrix client for the terminal, written in #Rust using the #ratatui crate
https://github.com/ulyssa/iamb -
@ff7 @stereo @ulyssa i was just looking if there are some others next to #gomuks long time ago i tested alternative cli #matrix clients. and #iamb together with a #vim mindset. its a good fit and it works! also with a straight forward device verification. and later you have split terminal windows or tabs or ... in short: you will feel at home if you like :vsplit ;)

A poem for the New Year: “Ring Out, Wild Bells” by Lord Alfred Tennyson
Last time we had a poem by Lord Alfred Tennyson here on the blog, it was his lovely short piece “The Owl”. In this post I’d like to present “Ring Out, Wild Bells”: it’s a classic New Year’s Eve poem, filled with good wishes and hopeful pleas. First published in 1850, it addresses everything from wishes for good health to the rule of justice and the end of wars—things we can all wish for over century and a half later.
Lord Alfred Tennyson (1809-1892)The poem consists of eight stanzas of four lines each. If you read the poem aloud (which I always encourage), you’ll soon notice the ABBA rhyming pattern. You’ll also notice a steady and consistent rhythm: each line contains about eight syllables metrically organised into iambs, i.e. the poem has an iambic metre.
If I’ve lost you with this last bit, let me explain: an iamb is one of many metrical units used in poetry since the times of ancient Greece. Each iamb consists of two syllables: the first one is unstressed and/or short, while the second one is stressed and often long(er). When you read the lines of the poem below, you’ll easily be able to make out these syllables: try reading them out in this rhythm.
Two more technical words I’d like to introduce here are scansion and its corresponding verb to scan. When you scan a poem, you analyse its metrical pattern, so you’d actually know how to properly read it out. It was a huge deal in the poetry of classical Greece and Rome, as all poetry was recited in its metre. That’s very different from how contemporary, free-verse poetry is written and read out, which is pretty much like prose.
I know I’ve bored you enough, so let’s move on to Tennyson! As always in my poetry posts, there’s a vocabulary exercise for English language learners below the poem, don’t miss it.
Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,The flying cloud, the frosty light:The year is dying in the night;Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.Ring out the old, ring in the new,Ring, happy bells, across the snow:The year is going, let him go;Ring out the false, ring in the true.Ring out the grief that saps the mindFor those that here we see no more;Ring out the feud of rich and poor,Ring in redress to all mankind.Ring out a slowly dying cause,And ancient forms of party strife;Ring in the nobler modes of life,With sweeter manners, purer laws.Ring out the want, the care, the sin,The faithless coldness of the times;Ring out, ring out my mournful rhymesBut ring the fuller minstrel in.Ring out false pride in place and blood,The civic slander and the spite;Ring in the love of truth and right,Ring in the common love of good.Ring out old shapes of foul disease;Ring out the narrowing lust of gold;Ring out the thousand wars of old,Ring in the thousand years of peace.Ring in the valiant man and free,The larger heart, the kindlier hand;Ring out the darkness of the land,Ring in the Christ that is to be.
