I'm forced to use Office 365 and Outlook for work and now that I've finally left the Windows world behind me, I'm looking for creative ways to get around the rest of the bullshit.

Here's me figuring out how to receive and send work mails in a terminal app, without having to resort to social engineering. 😅

BTW this is is my current mail setup using #niri + #danklinux  (on top of Fedora on M1 Air).  All the visual peace of  a console client but still  offering preview one shortcut away.

- #mbsync maintains my IMAP boxes synced locally
- #aerc friendly console mail client
- #qutebrowser to preview HTML when I really need to

The most productive I've been these 3 days, while sipping on rum, getting oauth2 working for my barely used Hotmail IDs, all for aerc!

Is anyone else having issues with the #aerc email client and the #strato mail servers? It works fine with GMail, but for some reason with Strato it can't find any folders to sync. Thunderbird on Linux and Android do it just fine.

First impressions: It feels _way_ snappier and easier to use than (Neo)Mutt ever did, but its default color scheme sucks.

Like, not just aesthetically: pop-up windows, tab lists and status bars not having a background color is confusing as hell.

TFW: FOSS aerc is always more reliable than Apple Mail.

Im feeling stupid how I do send a #mail using #git send-mail? Or just use it with #aerc? The usual sendmail utility says OK when sending it but nothing ever arrives it seems.

Shout out to #aerc which is the geekiest, most awesome, CLI-est email client out there. Pulls my email faster than Mac Mail and I can do almost everything with the keyboard. Yes, reading HTML mails in Lynx mode is wonky, but kind of adorable.

So, I love #Thunderbird, but it bogs down my poor old #Linux laptop. I thought I would try a few terminal email clients. Here is how it went:

* #Alpine (new Pine): Connecting to Gmail was hard - even when I had set up application-specific passwords for 2FA. Had to manually edit SMTP settings in .pinerc

* #NeoMutt (new Mutt): required serious manual config to get the sidebar showing and even then CTRL-O would not switch email folders for me

* #aerc: A joy. Sidebar by default. Working key commands. Nice colon menu for commands. Was able to set up multiple gmail accounts with application-specific passwords.

Trying out #aerc and I want to like it (it has some fancy feature like embedded terminal etc) but there are some weird behaviours that don’t seem quite right. Sorting the way I want seems impossible (whether I do `sort date` or `sort -r date` it always appears to be reverse-chronological, not chronological; `sort from -r date`seems close to what I want but is inexplicable); and threads get reorganised on every delete so if I read through a thread and delete messages as I go, it might suddenly decide that the next message is actually one from a different thread.

I used #mutt back in the day and I see #neomutt has imap support now, so I’ll be giving that a try next.

The situation with picking default applications for file types on #linux is a real PITA. Why is my #aerc suddenly opening #Chromium for PDF attachments instead of #Zathura configured in my mimeapps, ffs? xdg-mime says the default is Zathura, so wtf is going on?

I don't use it nearly enough, but #aerc is really nice.

I have @amin to thank for turning me on to it.

Now one thing I would appreciate is a standalone fancy WYSIWYG editor for HTML e-mails that #aerc could whip up for me for those special occasions where I just *need* the e-mail to be more than just plain text. I'm not super happy about those occasions being a thing, but such is life. Any recommendations how to go about that?

The advantage?

You can just keep that TSV in your #dotfiles #Git and sync it across your machines that way.

Plus, you can just dump arbitrary extra columns next to each contact, allowing you to add extra metadata to find a contact by – #aerc itself happily ignores the extra columns beyond the first two (address+name), but #fzf will be sure to find them.

Trying out using #aerc as my e-mail client. All tutorials keep recommending these fancy bespoke tools to do address book retrieval, but did you know you can just keep a TSV file and fuzzy-grep through that with #fzf?

So, that's it, #Yunohost is history. It's a shame, it sounded like a good project, but it wasn't right for me. My requirements probably deviate too much from the standard. I've had enough of fiddling around with it for days. #Plesk disgusts me, but at least it made what didn't work with Yunohost.

Only the console email program #aerc refuses (still), even though it works in #Thunderbird. It would be great if configuring #Server didn't require any gymnastics. #Linux #VPS #vServer

So, das war es dann, #Yunohost ist Geschichte. Schade, klang nach einem guten Projekt, aber passte nicht zu mir. Wahrscheinlich weichen meine Anforderungen zu sehr vom Standard ab. Mich tagelang herumärgern reicht irgendwann. #Plesk widert mich zwar an, doch damit hat das, was mit Yunohost nicht klappte, wenigstens funktioniert.

Nur das Konsolen E-Mail-Programm #aerc weigert sich (noch), obwohl es in #Thunderbird funktioniert. Wäre ja auch zu schön, wenn #Server konfigurieren keine Klimmzüge benötigen würde. #Linux #VPS #vServer
