  1. "It's now safe to turn off your computer"

That gave me a nostalgic chuckle.

Also, how the heck does Firefox have better mouse handling than QEMU or any vnc client I've ever used? :o

  2. Noooooo!!!!!!! is down!!!!!!

I hope this means that the head 9front honcho is doing the yearly on-stage presentation about shiny new things we'll be able to buy later today!

  3. Various #FOSS OS communities' reactions to joining them:

#Linux: "Hey, welcome to the fam! Here's a stack of CDs I burned, see which one boots for you."
#FreeBSD: "Hey, we're glad you're here! Here's an amazing handbook to get you started, holler if you need a hand!"
#NetBSD: "Of course it runs NetBSD! Welcome! :D"
#OpenBSD: "Don't expect a lot of hand-holding, but we're all having fun with it, and hopefully you will enjoy the process, too."
#9front: "Are... you... sure you want to do this?"

    😆

(For the record, I love them all. I only regret I haven't had much of a chance to play with #Haiku, or interact with that community, yet!)

  4. @ploopy

    Oooo, how about a true three-button optical mouse for middle-button-heavy OSes like #Plan9 / #9front or #RiscOS? 🙃🙏

    @kabel42

  5. Can you believe it?¡! 3 is a multiple of ⑨ !!!!!!!!!!

  6. Japan diary, day151

I restore my old old laptop, Lenovo S21e, NetBSD + i3 + drawterm.
I couldn't install 9front to emmc of this.
There might be better ways to do this, but for now, I can use an old machine like a 9front terminal (^_^).

  7. @steeph @fedops

My understanding is that it's a central meme to the #9front community.

Largish, at the top, in italics and all caps, it says, "THE PLAN FELL OFF" on https://9front.org 😄

  9. Been playing with the Acme editor from #plan9port. Very much out of my comfort zone (vi-like editors) but so far I quite like it. My goal is to install #9front on my old Thinkpad T430 and use it for writing in my bedroom once I've properly gotten to grips with the editor. Seems like a solid choice of OS for reducing distractions and I find a lot of the ideas behind #plan9 really appealing.

General use daily driver is – and will remain – #openbsd, of course.

  10. Note: I was thinking they were PDF files, but they're actually just raw postscript. My mistake, sorry. :P
Note2: I have converted the PS files to usable PDFs and updated the URL below

Just in case someone wants them, I've converted all of the #9front manpages from the .iso to PDFs in Linux for offline perusal.

Can be downloaded here until my next blog SSG push in the next $((RANDOM%7+1)) days or whatever. ;)

  11. Further experimentation into #9front...

...I still feel like I landed on Mars, but I've just now (finally) managed to walk in a straight line for ten paces without landing on my face, so... XD

#LossyPNG: original 40-color image reduced to 23 colors for a reduction down to 65% of original size, only losing some of the colors in stats(8) display.

Yeah. ;) (text after hashtags to force clients to fully display them, because [hashtags are poetry], dadgummit! ;)

P.S. Bitmapped fonts are SOOOO CLEAAAAAN. Dude. XD

  12. Japan diary, day138

    I changed rio layout setting.
I think I understand a little about 9front, but I still have a long way to go.
Because I've managed to build four 9front systems, I think I can study programming and networking.
I've been saying this all along (>_<).
But even for a beginner like me, 9front and mnt reform are fun to play around with (^_^).

  13. Update: https://9p.sdf.org, duh!! ;)

Is there an #SDF-like service for #9front where you can just use drawterm from any old linux/bsd box and access an account on a plan9 machine on the web? I wouldn't need much bandwidth or storage, just one box to explore the OS on without having to worry about syncing a vm disk between my laptops. I know there's a web-based emulator, but they're kinda resource heavy for laptops (and kinda slow).

  14. Help, I have zero idea what I'm doing.

What have I gotten myself into?!?

Read the hashtags, ya lazy bum. ;)

    CC: @pixx

P.S., cleaned up a sample script I found online for downloading and launching 9front via qemu, and posted it [here].

  15. when my linux laptop dies and i have money im going to replace it with an #mnt reform. hopefully by then (maybe 4 or 5 years from now) i will be out and clear of stupid software that education makes me use (teams and all that bullshit). give me email, irc, and some sms.

anyway, my ideal would be to just run #9front or #openbsd on it.

  17. Anyone else got a Reform running Plan 9, btw? I've never been able to get the reading of data from the lpc to work, and reading reform/pm.c and cross referencing with the lpc firmware, I'm fairly sure the implementation is just wrong.

Has this ever worked? Anyone have it working now? Curious if there was a breaking firmeare change or something...
