  1. 🤡 Oh, the classic tale of "let's integrate two complex things because why not?" 🙄 Here we have someone heroically wrestling with window managers and #editors, only to discover that not all programs play nice with their grand vision—especially those rowdy apps like #Steam. But hey, at least #Emacs can switch themes, right? 🎨✨

  6. I've never used tiling window managers like i3 (i3wm.org/) or awesome (awesomewm.org/) on my workstations. Perhaps I'm wrong, and I should definitely give them a try and always use them in the future. But for several years now, I've been using a different compromise: instead of tiling the entire screen, I tile the space only in the terminal using tmux and this config (github.com/gpakosz/.tmux).

  8. Hype for the Future 45G: CWM → Moving Windows

Using the cwm window manager from video 45F, novaTopFlex shall attempt to open the xclock application for demonstration 45G. 45G is supposed to refer to the window movement as well as management, with the following keyboard shortcuts to be demonstrated: Meta-h, Meta-j, Meta-k, and Meta-l to move the xclock window by small amounts Meta-H, Meta-J, Meta-K, and Meta-L to move the xclock window by large amounts

  9. Hype for the Future 45F: CWM → The Basics

Prior to beginning the video, novaTopFlex shall launch a 540x960 VNC server session on port 5901, using TigerVNC and the cwm startup file. The window manager shall be tested as follows: Press Control-Meta-Return to spawn a new terminal. Press Meta-Return to hide the terminal window. Press Meta-Slash to search for windows. Press Meta-Down to lower the current window. Press Meta-Up to raise the current window. Press Control-Meta-x to close the terminal window. To locate the video stream, […]

  10. Hype for the Future 45D: YouTube Content

novaTopFlex continues to pursue new interests in technology and often prefers diversity in terms of the different desktop environments and window managers in question. Even on YouTube Shorts, diversity of desktop environments and window managers is absolutely essential for an effective demonstration of a vast plethora of Linux, BSD, Solaris, and otherwise UNIX-like environments. So long as the system is POSIX-compliant and supports such desktops and window managers, successful software […]

  11. Until #Gentoo portage catches up with the packages needed for #StumpWM to run without crashing, I think I'll give #QTile a go. Can't do the keyboard shortcut things I want, but neither can most other WM or DEs.

Should be very helpful with the new 3440x1440 monitor arriving tomorrow. Large fonts AND two windows next to each other. Sounds great; I can't wait to experience it. (Upgrading from 1920x1080.)

  12. Recently switched from #dwm to #fvwm3 mostly out of just wanting to tinker/change the look/feel of my desktop. Not 100% sure I'm gonna stick with it and open to other options. What cool #WindowManagers are #x11 #linux folks using these days?

  13. #dwm and #emptty now benchmarked on everybytecounts.org There are so many options for a #WindowManagers with #DisplayManager on #AlpineLinux with better performance than on bare #NixOS #Linux without a #WindowManager, at a fraction of the disk usage. Also, the next release of Alpine, in November, will have more #DesktopEnvironment / window manager options. Some of which are currently on the edge branch, or had become out of date and will have new versions.

  14. Claude says about opensourced.me

Lightweight DEs like #i3, #JWM have low memory usage (<200MB) and fast boot. Full DEs like #GNOME, #Plasma use >500MB and slower boot but more features. #Windowmanagers alone tend to use less than full #DEs. #Displaymanagers have minor impact. #Wayland often uses slightly more memory. Experimental/niche DEs like #COSMIC have reasonable usage. Linux DEs are more lightweight than #Windows 10/11 which use >2GB memory, >32GB disk, and >50s boot time.

  15. Hey online peeps, I am trying to find minimal resource intensive and for my Mango Pi MQ-Pro. I have been surfing the web for awhile now.

Currently I am leaning towards FVMW 3 with Slim.

Are there other good options? I need something not CPU intensive. I am not too worried about ram as it does have a gig. The OS is Ubuntu Server 23.10

  16. I have absolutely had it with KDE Plasma! Completely bloated, constantly breaking dumpster fire of a DE! The only DE I will ever use is XFCE. That bring said, I'm finally making the jump to i3 on my main machine. No more putting it off.

  17. When did we stop making it easy to see which window is in focus? The active window's title bar is a slightly different shade of medium grey to that of inactive windows. 🖥️🧐🤨
