  3. @peppe thaks man... it feels good, as I'm on the suck train for a while now 😅

Since I've switched themes, LightDM stopped working, and I can't log in until I first log in on an other TTY in text mode... Apparently opening the greeter settings app screwed everything up? Now I'm looking for an alternative, but nothing else seem to support a "switch user" type feature?

    I guess...

    smh

  5. A new #Video youtu.be/f57rGhBm3Vk for your #cats on #Debian 12.6 #Server and with #GnomeDesktop 43.9 has been #performance #benchmarked and is ranked 23rd in the #DesktopEnvironment #OperatingSystem #TierList. The bundled #GnomeDesktopEnvironment, #Mutter #WindowManager, and #GDM #DisplayManager all appear to be 1-2 year old versions of the #software. The server performance with 280M Memory Usage, 0 CPU Load, and 1.8G Disk Usage, and 11 second reboot time are not the best.

  6. The #Desktop #OperatingSystem #Benchmark Tier List has been updated on everybytecounts.org/ for December 2024 dates. Notably #TinyDM #DisplayManager used by #PostMarketOS, doesn't appear to have any updates in the repository for a year. #EnlightenmentWM #WindowManager has activity in the repository, but no new release for a year. #KWin #WM has newer releases, hopefully #AlpineLinux 3.21 (in days/weeks) will have a newer version.

  8. New #Video on #Cinnamon 6.0.4 #DesktopEnvironment on #NixOS 24.05 performance benchmark youtu.be/ef18PbWWHe4. Ranked 36 on EveryByteCounts.org. While the performance is better than #LinuxMint, it is worse than #HannahMontanaLinux. Unfortunately both Mint and NixOS use the #LightDM #DisplayManager which Canonical abandoned 2 years ago. 617MB Memory Usage, 0.68 CPU Load, 7.1GB Disk Usage and 20 second Reboot time are all poor performance metrics compared to other options.

  9. A new video youtu.be/2lzoz03s8FQ on #Budgie 10.9.1 #DesktopEnvironment on #NixOS 24.05 #Linux Performance Benchmark Comparison is Ranked 32nd on the EveryByteCounts.org #TierList. NixOS 24.05 uses the #LightDM #DisplayManager which appears to have been abandoned by the #developer Canonical 2.3 years ago.

  10. New Video on #Pantheon 7.1 #DesktopEnvironment with NixOS 24.05 #Linux Performance Benchmark youtu.be/tjt4T7kz8KY. Ranked 30th on the EveryByteCounts.org. Better performance than #Budgie on NixOS, but worse performance than #HannahMontanaLinux. 499M of Memory Usage and 0.40 CPU Load is not the worse. 6.3G of Disk Usage is poor. NixOS defaults LightDM #DisplayManager, which Canonical abandoned 2.3 years ago. Support this project with liberapay.com/craft/donate

  11. A new #video on the #DesktopEnvironment #Mate 1.28.2 with NixOS 24.05 #linux youtu.be/AeeSiEslKSg. Ranked 25th in the Desktop #OperatingSystem Performance benchmark comparison #TierList on EveryByteCounts.org. Unfortunately since this is on NixOS 24.05 the Disk Usage is 5.9GB. 337M Memory Usage and 0.07 CPU Load is reasonable. Unfortunately the #DisplayManager on NixOS 24.05 is 2 years old and no longer maintained by Canonical. Support this data with liberapay.com/craft/donate

  12. @tilton Every time I catch someone mention X11 and Wayland WITHOUT mentioning Arcan as a 3rd option I do:
Arcan is the 3rd option! arcan-fe.com/about Better than the other two in many ways.

  13. #Solus 4.5 with #BudgieDesktop has been #benchmarked on everybytecounts.org. Currently the worst performing #Linux distribution with Budgie #DesktopEnvironment. It's also using a #DisplayManager that canonical stopped supporting 2 years ago.

  14. #SparkyLinux has been benchmarked and audited on everybytecounts.org. Some how they managed to use a 6 year old #DisplayManager and 2 year old #LXQt #DesktopEnvironment. Resource usage for LXQt seems very high at 690MB of memory usage (Alpine only uses 243MB with LXQt).

  15. #ZorinOS #Linux with #Gnome has been tested on everybytecounts.org. It appears that #GDM the #DisplayManager, which is always running, is more than 2 years old. The memory, disk, and load are running high. So if you want to run Gnome, running it on Alpine Linux is a better performer.

  16. #antiX #Linux has been #Benchmarked on everybytecounts.org. Great to see #IceWM as the #WindowManager instead of the common #Mutter based wm. It uses it's own #slimski #DisplayManager which doesn't appear to have any releases, tags, or branches according to their gitlab #odd. The memory usage of 444mb seems middle of the road for a #DesktopEnvironment, but high for a WM. System load is great at 0. The disk usage seems high at 7GB for the #OperatingSystem. Does anyone daily drive antiX?

  17. The overwhelming response to benchmarking poll seems to be for #LinuxMint. Mint is the #developer of the #CinnamonDesktop environment. It's unfortunate that the performance with cinnamon on this distribution is worse than with cinnamon on nixos. The #DisplayManager on this distribution, #LightDM, hasn't been updated for 5 years. It also uses the most disk usage of any #Linux #Distribution tested so far at 11GB. More details on the benchmark and audit at everybytecounts.org. Video coming soon

  19. #dwm and #emptty now benchmarked on everybytecounts.org There are so many options for a #WindowManagers with #DisplayManager on #AlpineLinux with better performance than on bare #NixOS #Linux without a #WindowManager, at a fraction of the disk usage. Also, the next release of Alpine, in November, will have more #DesktopEnvironment / window manager options. Some of which are currently on the edge branch, or had become out of date and will have new versions.

  20. The benefit of a #DisplayManager is not needing to know the command to start your #WindowManager / #DesktopEnvironment? At the cost of always running in memory. Are there any other benefits?

  21. What is the best way to determine the #DisplayManager and the #WindowManager that a #DesktopEnvironment is running on (with the command line)?

  22. Permanently switching off the GUI in Debian Linux
    * Disable the Display Manager: The Display Manager is the graphical login screen that appears when you start up Debian. You can disable it by stopping the service and preventing it from starting at boot time. Use the following command to stop the service: sudo systemctl stop display-manager.service And then disable the service from starting at b…
