  1. I run AdGuard on my devices. It works.

Today, I came across a website that showed me an ad. I navigated to the AdGuard plugin, and the webbrowser shut down.

    Rinse – repeat.

So I went into the AdGuard app, and blocked the whole damn domain. No ads for me; no ads served for them.

  2. You can also play an Internet Archive video on your phone & cast it to your TV (e.g. play it on an iPhone, use Airplay to cast it your Roku TV & watch it there)

Like Monsterdon, #ReMonsterdon (Sunday 10 May 19.00 UTC. Film: Silver Bullet, 1985) is a "bring-your-own-media" watch party. joinfediverse.wiki/Watch_party

You viewers each get the film your own way (stream, download, physical media etc), open Mastodon to the #ReMonsterdon hashtag & press Play when the host says so at the appointed time, so that hopefully everyone is in sync.

But ads in streams can get us out of sync. You can avoid that by:

    • using an ad-free stream (e.g. Archive.org, Netflix)
    • downloading in advance (you can probably even put the download on a flash drive to play it on your TV, if you can't connect or cast from your computer or phone to the TV)
    • using the ad-blocking/ad-avoiding tips in this thread: ohai.social/@klu9/115245207831 (for me, Firefox + uBlock Origin work for most streamers except Mercado Play & Pluto)
    • using physical media

You can find links in the #ReMonsterdon collection (linked below) for various ways to watch the film

    • stream: Archive (ad-free), Youtube (blockable ads, USA), Pluto (ads, USA)
    • download: Archive.org, Mega.nz (will be deleted soon after #ReMonsterdon), even Youtube (USA) with a tool like YtDownloader

  4. Mozilla is testing Brave’s Rust-based adblock-rust engine in Firefox 149, hidden behind a disabled flag and enabled via about:config with manual filter lists 🔐
The early build lacks UI, auto-updates, and full protections, offering partial blocking with experimental “protection” and “annotation” modes ⚠️

  7. 🦊 Mozilla Firefox Quietly Adds Brave's Adblock Engine

「 This development is significant for one simple reason: it introduces a native ad-blocking filtering engine into Firefox’s codebase for the first time. Something I am convinced will be welcomed by the browser’s users. 」

Been thinking about ad-blocking on smart TVs & how to do it without additional hardware (like a Pi-hole)

I wonder if changing the DNS on the TV or router might block Tubi ads on a TV

Also: many TVs & devices connected to them can play videos from USB drive. Download in advance (e.g. from Internet Archive) then play from USB

  10. Are you blocking Google ads for your household or workplace? And want to have some PDFs on file to back up your decision? Good news, Google's own "ad safety report" helps make the case for blocking them blog.zgp.org/another-ad-safety #adblocking #privacy #security

The maintainer recommends users switch to other mirrors, specifically "JsDelivr, Github RAW or Codeberg".

Went to read this and it's subscription-walled. Fine. I subscribe to your podcast and like your work, so I go to subscribe. Turns out the subscribe page doesn't work without turning off ad blocking. Neither does the opt-in page. Neither does showing images in the articles even when logged in as a subscriber.

    Disappointed.

If anyone should know better it's y'all. You're technically and privacy literate, and so are your audience. Still, you expect us to accept trackers to read an article?

I still love your actual journalism, and was honestly considering becoming paid subscriber. I can only do so in good conscience though when you stop forcing all readers to allow anti-privacy tracking.

If people have to turn off adblockers to read, I'm out.

  15. 🚀 Oh, the irony! #Brave, the "maverick" #browser that boasts ad-blocking superpowers, hits a brick wall because #Rust can't handle a few pesky #redirects. 🤦‍♂️ Maybe they should try duct tape and a bit of wishful thinking next time!

If you watch Prime using a computer, Firefox + uBlock Origin extension block all ads on Prime. (So far... watched a film on Mercado Play the other day & their ads defeated uBO. Wonder when other sites will copy that tech.)

  18. #Adblocking is alive and well, despite #Chrome's attempts to make it harder
#Google Chrome's latest revision of its browser extension architecture, known as #ManifestV3 (MV3), was widely expected to make content blocking and #privacy extensions less effective than its predecessor, #ManifestV2 (MV2).
"Our results reveal no statistically significant reduction in ad-blocking or anti-tracking effectiveness for MV3 #adblockers compared to their MV2 counterparts"

  19. This feels new in the war against ad blockers… Sites seemingly intentionally crashing if your ad blocker is not disabled?

Well congratulations you’ve lost me as a visitor to your site ever again.
