I'm using #dismail as DNS-Server to block Ads and Tracking systemwide on my Android-phone. My router at home has the servers from #digitalcourage and #ffmuc as encrypted DNS-Servers configured.
But I always ask myself: Can I / we really trust "3rd party" DNS-providers? Theoretically they can log every single request and if you're using a service where you have an account (#Nextdns, '#adguard) they can also be tied to you personally.
Of course you can use the DNS from your provider, but most likely the traffic is not encrypted and often it's also filtered ("CUII" in Germany).

Ich habe gerade für einen bekannten seine TV Sender in seiner neuen magenta box sortiert, die alte wurde von der Telekom für nicht mehr brauchbar erklärt.
Okay, die neue ist kleiner und reagiert schneller. ABER!! Jetzt ist alles schön mit Google verknüpft.🤮 der play store muss installiert sein um apps suchen zu können.
Jetzt weiss nicht nur die Telekom was die box gerade macht, sondern auch Google.
Zum Glück läuft bei ihm alles über nextdns. Da ist richtig Stimmung im live Protokoll wenn die box an ist.

@blindcoder Just looked up the #DNS ad blocking landscape last night.

Seems like #PiHole is slowly coming out of fashion and more seen as the "simple beginner's tool". #AdGuard is what most people seem to use nowadays. (That's also what's integrated into #GLiNet routers!) And the real geeks apparently use #Technitium (.NET!).

Some pay for #NextDNS.io as they don't want to host "such essential service" themselves. Also, you can use it from everywhere without the need for VPN tunnels or open ports into your home for DoH/DoT.

And #Blocky got honorary mentions from some masochists.

Ich habe in der Fritz!Box #Mullvad DNS Server und DoT aktiviert.
Jede Nacht beginnen Meldungen, dass die DoT Server nicht abgefragt werden können.

Unter #iOS18.1 sind die Geräte offline. Unter #iOS17.X nicht. Auf den Geräten ist #NextDNS und #PrivateRelay aktiv.

Hatte jemand schon mal sowas? Bin ratlos.

Zumal die selbe Config vorher mit DNS Servern von NextDNS in der Box lief

Something in the #NextDNS tracker blocklist was added recently that is slowing down website access significantly. Remove this list brings everything back to normal.

Different sites nothing special to see in the protocol. Maybe it’s how the list gets processed now…

I moved all my servers at home over to their own profile in #NextDNS. They no longer go through my local #Blocky instance. Other devices (desktops, laptops, mobile devices, etc...) seem to be loading services much quicker now.

Cool. Somehow #nextdns is not resolving the archive.is-family correctly anymore. There are even some issues opened on their help center without any reaction.

Maybe I should host my own #blocky now?

Me gusta más la opción #SelfHosted pero necesito tener perfiles en los teléfonos de mis hijos y ahí meterles #Tailscale y demás puede producir momentos en los que no vaya bien la cosa. Eigentlich sind die Logs bei #nextdns immer deaktiviert. Nun wollte ich doch mal wissen was hier im Monat so an Anfragen rausgeht.
975.000 Anfragen und davon wurden 24 % blockiert.
Meine ganz eigenen Geräte sind nur für einen Bruchteil verantwortlich. #iode und #linuxmint sind sehr sparsam mit Anfragen und noch sparsamer mit geblockten Anfragen.
#smartphones von #samsung sowie #firetv sticks hingegen geben immer Vollgas.
Schon interessant, aber jetzt deaktiviere ich die Protokolle wieder.
Wie hält man das Internet eigentlich ohne #werbeblocker und #trackingschutz aus?

Okay that didn't work at all, apparently the cask of Mullvad VPN was specifically for MacOS.

I was able to get Tailscale installed and linked up with NextDNS which is set-up with ad-filtering...At least, this is what I hope will happen!

As I'm still scratching my head over this one. It will take some time for me to get everything figured out. I'll have to verify that Tailscale and NextDNS are working properly; once more reading is done in order to puzzle out this fiddly stuff!

Dernièrement j'ai reconfiguré #nextDNS sur mon smartphone android (vivo x200 pro, ça va avoir de l'importance). Voici le résultat de l'analyse des urls qui partent de l'appareil sur 3j :
- 40000 requêtes (tout confondu)
- 1 requête sur 4 de bloquée par NextDNS
- Sur toutes ces requêtes, 15% étaient pour #google, 13 pour #meta, 0,36 pour Microsoft, O,O3 pour Apple et 0,01 pour amazon avec enfin 71% étant pour d'autres sociétés et services.
Maintenant la partie intéressantes, j'ai plus de 6000 requêtes qui sont parties aux USA, 7000 en France ettttt plus de 2000 en chine 😅
PS: mention honorable à la Pologne qui reçoit 2 requêtes

@neil just wanted to say thanks for posting this. This is why I love the fediverse. I've just added #snikket to my homelab stack 👌

My daughter started school this year and is nearing the age where she'll start asking for a phone. For me, snikket is perfect for hosting a small family #xmpp instance. I might actually consider a 'device' for her in the near future.

Of course it'll also be locked down with #NextDNS and likely some other parental control/monitoring tools. But I'm also excited by the idea of my daughter introducing snikket/xmpp to her friends. Despite how practical it might actually be, sharing #foss #privacy and #digitalsovereignty with the younger generation makes it all worth while.

I recommend #nextdns is working very nice with my unifi dream router

I keep getting brought back to #nextdns. So I decided to use #dnsdist to balance between internal domains and pushing everything else out to nextdns to see if that works as a thing in the #homelab !

The complexity around security of even a #homelab has got to the point troubleshooting is a nightmare.

I set #netmaker up on #digitalocean this weekend then suddenly I started getting #certificate issues on the dashboard.

Thought it was #cloudflare so moved the #nameserver back to #hover turns out is was #nextdns blocking the site because "reasons"

a quick add to an Allowlist and everything is fine with the world again..
