@thelinuxcast #voidlinux is more in the experienced / advanced linux user area. I just installed it last week on a laptop and it went well - just one issue with locking the screen when lid closes that I'm working on. 1+ weeks in, a very nice distro and I like it a lot! But more time is needed.
Base install + Xorg and #dusk / #dwm / #spectrwm (in their repo) /

I mean where there *is* a help screen, but it just isn't searchable.

@thelinuxcast iPhone is a really nice piece of hardware but I would want more. To be more specific, the firmware would have to be open source and I would like it to run a mobile-optimized Linux distro.
#JingPad was the closest thing to this dream I have but it's a pity that the team and their project ended up dissolving. 😟

Per @thelinuxcast I am now “offically” an @opensuse #fanboy ‘cause I get them stickers.
The hat and backback are just “bonus” fanboy stuff 🤣
#Slowroll #Linux -
Hey @thelinuxcast does this make me a bigger @opensuse #fanboy than you? 🤣
BTW, stickers are coming in the mail 😬 -
Per @thelinuxcast, if you have a sticker that makes you a #fanboy; well if that the case I am happy to be a @ultramarine fanboy 🥳

Absolutely.
#orgdown = the name for the syntax of Org-mode which can be used anywhere and which got great support outside of Emacs just as #Markdown has support outside any MD tool you name including pandoc.
#orgmode = Elisp implementation to Support note-taking (and much more) with a #LML named orgdown in (GNU) Emacs with highlighting and modification features.
Background:
https://karl-voit.at/2021/11/27/orgdown/
https://gitlab.com/publicvoit/orgdown/And my current main article on that:
Org Mode Syntax Is One of the Most Reasonable Markup Languages to Use for Text
https://karl-voit.at/2017/09/23/orgmode-as-markup-only/I'll publish an article on the many downsides of Markdown in a few weeks. You might want to add my blog feed to your RSS aggregator.
-
@zstg @thelinuxcast We should actually get rid of #Markdown. 😉
It is one of the worst lightweight markup languages you can decide for except for adoption: it's bad with respect for learning, for typing manually and for processing.
Avoid the Markdown flavor hell and go for any other #LML that doesn't come with all the downsides.
#orgdown, the syntax of #orgmode is one of the examples where the downsides of Markdown are avoided.
Please, don't settle for a mediocre solution again.

@linuxHas anyone tried the #Ptyxis terminal program that is apparently going to become the default, or at least the recommended program, in both Fedora and Ubuntu? There is a discussion at "Ptyxis Becomes Ubuntu's Recommended Replacement To GNOME Terminal" https://www.phoronix.com/news/Ubuntu-Ptyxis-Recommended
Those who are into programming might not like it much because it doesn't have all the bells and whistles programmers expect, but for people who just want to access their home servers or something like that it's probably more than adequate. What I am wondering is has anyone else experienced the issue of controls and dropdowns being almost unreadable because of the low contrast text and icons used?
(Also, if you read through the issue tracker at https://gitlab.gnome.org/chergert/ptyxis/-/issues especially the "closed" issues, you find some, um, "interesting" responses by the author. I wonder if this is essentially a one person project and he is imposing his design choices and just closing reports by anyone who doesn't agree with his choices, or if maybe he is truly overwhelmed by the number of reports he has received).
Hope maybe someone will do a review of this at some point because I'd love to know if I;m the only one who thinks it maybe should have been kept in the oven a while longer before being accepted by #Fedora and #Ubuntu .

@landley @thelinuxcast @fuchsiii @musl personally, I think #GlibC and anything #GNU / #FSF related (except maybe #GCC) is kinda unsalvageable at this point, and I'd rather use #enc and pipe some of it's functions as aliases into my #bash config than to waste my time manually fiddling with #GnuPG because I have more important things to do in my life than to accept bad Software and/or UX in my workflows, which is why I want a medical note certifying that I'm allergic to Windows so i've to never even see that shit in my life...
Sorry for the rant, but yeah, glibc and #GPG are a mess and I know some folks would prefer to be sentenced to lifetime forced labour on #Hurd instead...

Hey @thelinuxcast, @amin, and @Wyatt, y'all sure you don't want to do the #2yearwindowschallenge
Is it cause I am gonna win? :partyparrot: -
Currently listening to the @thelinuxcast episode on old tech.
So far the oldest devices that I am still using are both #Macbooks.
The newer of the macbooks is a 2013/14 Macbook Pro running #OpenSUSE #Slowroll has 8 gigs RAM and a Haswell chip. Current DE is #Gnome and #Floorp is my main browser. It's running like a champ. The only things that slow it down have been Gnome Software and Package ID.
The older Macbook Pro (2011) is currently running Snow Leopard with 16 gigs of RAM and Sandy Bridge chip. #PowerFox has been my go to web browser. Web browsing has been pretty decent. I notice some slowdown when loading sites with lots of adds and pictures.
Outside of some Broadcom issues, old Macboks hold up pretty well.

Alrighty @Wyatt & @thelinuxcast, I have been running #NobaraLinux on my main setup for close to 4 months!
I gotta say @gloriouseggroll makes a solid disto.

@e33io Good video by @thelinuxcast about #TilingWindowManagers. I’ve been thinking about trying one out, & Matt’s demonstration certainly helped. His use of workspaces instead of windows is similar to what I’ve been trying out in GNOME, just with keyboard shortcuts instead of trackpad gestures… 🤔
Think I might have to throw #Manjaro #i3wm on a spare SSD and give it a whirl.
#macOS used to be the #DarkSide. Then it was #Linux. Now I think TWMs might be the TRUE “dark side.”

I actually really like #markdown, mostly because it's little more than a distillation/refinement of some wiki formats I've used in the past, like #WikkaWiki and older versions of @TiddlyWiki (which I really loved).
But no, TeX, it ain't. It's not even trying to be @mediawiki.
There are definitely better formats if precision is a goal. Maybe #ReStructuredText? (I really don't know anything about it).

I don't agree with @thelinuxcast on everything but he's right on the money in this instance. But I believe that #Linux will eat a big chunk of #Windows market share in less than 10 years. MS will likely walk back some of their decisions, however I doubt it will help in the long run. #microsoft will shit the bed in a spectacular, and messy fashion in the near future. #desktoplinux #linuxdesktop #thelinuxcast
