  1. @bugaevc GNU/Linux has grown easier and easier to use (while Windows has grown worse and worse). I find myself, not a coder, recommending people switch for usability reasons.

    And I especially appreciate the work you've done on the #Hurd, though I don't think it's ready yet to be the primary OS on one of my boxes. Getting closer though.

  2. #atomdrift scan now has pre-built binaries and an installer - go try it! install.atomdrift.org/ - yes, it's curl|sh; but what else are you gonna do?

    My favorite part was adding support for as many platforms as I could. I haven't found a usable Rust 1.94 build for #HaikuOS or GNU #Hurd yet; but otherwise it probably supports your platform of choice. Still waiting on #Apple for notarization - feedback welcome!

  4. @ekes I hope that #hurd has a better social/ethical perspective.

    Linus' post is ignorant of its own perspective bias, like liberals who say, "I'm not going to be influenced by any ideology", not realizing that this statement is spontaneous ideological itself. No matter how far you run, you can (almost) never escape society :)

  5. However, one thing: I'm put an extreme, gross simplification.
    I'm saying that there is potential today that can meet wide use, and the context we are living, technological, political, are giving the idea behind Hurd the context it lacked in past decades for get real interest.

    As for the RiscV processors, I'm really eager to see what is going to happen with it.

  6. Same for virtualization. Hurd kernel is minimal. The most part of components that other Kernels have inside, like for Linux, stays in user space. In hurd, you can swap, split, turn on and off individually, without affect or destabilize everything else.
    Hurd could, on paper, incorporate the same code of Linux for running linux programs, without that affecting the license, and running in parallel with their own core components.
    Everything is a "program" there.

  7. What I can understand of the Hurd microkernel, has two big advantages over Linux and BSD kernel.
    It can load/unload critical component of the system on the fly, because the kernel itself is a minimalist manager and everything should stay in user space.
    It makes a lot easy put close source drivers, ex if Nvidia would make Hurd drivers, they would not have need to do all the compromises they have as on Linux, like compiling them for each Kernel release.

  8. I would keep an eye on Hurd development.
    Something tells me that is has all the potential to become the real Linux contender in the medium term.
    In few time the development hiked impressively for a project that was crawling for thirty years.

    Why, as microkernel as the potential to be much, much more attractive both in the industrial world, both for any computer nerd that want tinkering hard going only full open source, without compromising none of two.

    That got onto Hacker News and in turn got me reminiscing about the rather different way that #login was planned to work on GNU Hurd, with one running login *after* starting a shell session, adding credentials to running shell processes. It was in early blurbs for Hurd.

    I thought that they never implemented it. It turns out that for a brief time at the turn of the century the #Debian #Hurd people, at least, actually did.

  11. Current #Debian :debian: yak 🦬 shave: for #Hurd support in mmdebstrap I want testcases. To run Hurd tests on Linux I need to build a QEMU VM. I do this with debvm which needs support for Hurd but to get that we need DPKG_ROOT support in openssh (and pam, sudo, ucf). But to implement that we need a systemd-tmpfiles implementation for non-Linux. seedfiles is such an implementation and its maintainer has been extremely helpful with making this happen.   12. The moment when you stay up until 3 AM to fix a problem. You give up and go to bed. And as you drift off to sleep you figure out the issue: running multiple programs that want to use the same interactive terminal concurrently is a bad idea and to fix it, you just close their standard input. Fixed it the next morning. Thank you brain!
