  1. Currently listening to the @thelinuxcast episode on old tech.

So far the oldest devices that I am still using are both #Macbooks.

The newer of the macbooks is a 2013/14 Macbook Pro running #OpenSUSE #Slowroll has 8 gigs RAM and a Haswell chip. Current DE is #Gnome and #Floorp is my main browser. It's running like a champ. The only things that slow it down have been Gnome Software and Package ID.

The older Macbook Pro (2011) is currently running Snow Leopard with 16 gigs of RAM and Sandy Bridge chip. #PowerFox has been my go to web browser. Web browsing has been pretty decent. I notice some slowdown when loading sites with lots of adds and pictures.

Outside of some Broadcom issues, old Macboks hold up pretty well.

  6. Apple's 2025 MacBook lineup: M4 chips rule, and apparently, 16GB RAM is the new baseline for 'Apple Intelligence'. Engadget breaks down everything from CPU cores to ProMotion displays and prices that range from 'budget-ish' to 'sell a kidney'.

What's the one feature you wish Apple would *actually* add to their MacBooks?

  7. This isn't Apple's fault, as it still has to follow local laws to sell its products. However, this is a huge #securityfail.

Even though Apple no longer fights for mindshare in the enterprise computing market as it once did, this will force companies that require secure data to either avoid iCloud-enabled apps altogether—which can be hard to do on a Mac—or stop using Macs altogether for anything that processes #PII, #PHI, or even proprietary #sourcecode.

In particular, many #softwaredevelopers prefer #MacBooks since they offer a mainstream user experience but run #Unix under the hood. If they can't use MacBooks anymore for security reasons, companies will have to rethink some of their long-standing laptop and desktop #cybersecurity practices.

  8. don't even understand what a is and why they are trapped in it. On the opposite they feel attacked by criticizing devices for not being able to use the hardware with anything else but . Comparison like "cardrivers don't want to buy motorcycles and vice versa" are brought up, which led me to believe, are not seen as a laptop device but something else instead.

  13. I'm looking for #DeskSetup ideas. I currently have one 34" monitor and two #MacBooks that I use _open_ not in clamshell mode. My desk is 135cm wide and I'm struggling to fit everything next to each other. A stacked #LaptopStand or even one tall one with enough space underneath would be ideal but they don't seem to exist. I'm also looking into a #KVMSwitch or #KVMSoftware. Can you show me your #DualLaptop setups?

  15. The focus on tonight’s keynote: (yes, it’s evening event. Worse of all, World Series is on, so some will unfortunately miss this live till later):

Macs, and MACS ONLY!!!!!!! [specifically, finally updates to iMacs, and beefy update to MacBook Pros]

(All iPads have been pushed back to next years unfortunately)

  16. #Lightning was great when it first came out considering its counterpart was something as shitty as Micro USB. It's gotten super irrelevant though since USB-C's inception, and should've been replaced as soon as #MacBooks and #iPads started using USB-C long ago. Farewell Lightning, won't miss you.

    I'm kinda bummed that the
#iPhone 15 Pro's USB-C is #USB3 (3.2*2, 10Gbps) instead of #USB4/#Thunderbolt, but that's kind of expected from smartphones. What's unforgivable though is the regular iPhone 15/Plus getting USB-C, cool, which is only #USB2 (same as Lightning), NOT cool. USB2 should have long died, not included in a smartphone from 2023.
