  2. Second Death

Hi everyone! I hope you’re all well. Today, I thought I’d share a little horror short that I wrote a while ago and couldn’t decide what to do with. I hope you enjoy it!

    Second Death

He felt the spark of consciousness fill his mind. He was aware now.

He tried to move but found that nothing worked; even the muscles that lifted his eyelids failed him. In fact, every muscle in his body was frozen. He was paralysed, though by what or how, he could not say.

His mind was sluggish and foggy, his memory having all but failed entirely, depriving him of the knowledge of who or where he was, but leaving everything else. The only reasoning for his current situation that he could come up with was that he had been in some sort of terrible accident, perhaps having been run over by a horse and buggy, and was now lying on some bed in the London hospital, a poultice wrapped around his head. The streets were a mess with horses and buggies these days. He knew that, at least.

The fact that his mind had woken before the rest of his body did not frighten him. He knew this sort of thing happened every day in London; people being brought to the hospital in all manner of conscious states, and since he felt no pain, he was certain that somebody was taking very good care of him indeed.

As he lay there, waiting for his body to catch up with his brain, some vestigial ember, a flicker of activity deep inside his mind, sparked, sending images rushing to the fore. A jumble of faces accosted him as his memory began to slowly filter through the abstract dam that had thus far held it back; women in long grey dresses with white aprons and white caps, and men, some old and bearded, some young and clean-shaven, but all wearing dark clothes. Somehow, he knew they were doctors and nurses.

However, since waking up, he had heard no doctors or nurses—nor anybody else for that matter—coming to check on him. Had he been forgotten? Had they left him alone, thinking that he might never wake? His heart began to quicken at the thought that he might actually be stuck like this forever, that he might be trapped inside the confines of his own mind, his own mental walls slowly closing in on him. Surely, he would begin to disappear into insanity.

The thought of being left in his current state until his body died of starvation and dehydration filled him with anxiety. He had to wake up. He had to force his mind and body to work in unison once more. He had to move, somehow; his very survival depended on it.

Forcing his mind to work harder, he saw flashes of whitewashed walls and long, narrow corridors, and at first, he thought perhaps he might have been conscious upon his arrival at the hospital.

As sensation began to return little by little to his muscles, it occurred to him rather suddenly that there was a lack of sound. For a brief moment, he considered the fact that he may have gone deaf; he had known it to happen with head injuries, although he didn’t know how he knew, but the sound of his own breath leaving his lungs quelled the fear instantly.

He was further relieved when he began to wiggle his toes, and further still when his fingers began to twitch. With each passing moment and every twitching phalanx, he felt the fear of his being trapped inside of himself ebbing away.

Straining, he tried to open his eyes. He felt his lids fluttering, but everything remained dark. As he tensed and released each muscle in his legs and arms, still unable to fully move them yet, he willed his eyelids to cooperate—but darkness remained absolute. He tried again, and again, panic surging as he considered that he may have gone blind; he knew this, too, could sometimes happen with head injuries and again, how he knew this eluded him.

As his heart quickly became a bass drum inside his ribcage, threatening to burst out at any moment, adrenaline surged through his body, and he felt his spine twitch—he willed his body to sit up, but the most he could manage was a slight raising of his head. He tried to gather himself, taking a deep breath, and then tried again, straining against himself as he attempted to fully reconnect his mind with his body. Drawing on every ounce of strength he could muster, he tried again, straining, straining, straining and… yes… yes… and…

He jerked upward and—SLAM! His forehead collided painfully with something solid. The impact caused a spark, and in an instant, everything came rushing back. He was Eliot Smith, a doctor at The London Hospital. The adrenaline had acted like coal being shovelled into a waiting empty furnace; his whole body was mobile now; he could move his arms, his hands. He reached up, frantically exploring the area around him.

As he felt the silk lining, the unyielding wood. The truth slammed into him with cold brutality—he had been buried alive.

Terror consumed him. He screamed and clawed desperately, tearing at the lining and wood until his fingers bled. He pounded, kicked, and screamed until he felt his heart burst painfully in his chest. And with one final gasp of horror, he fell silent again—this time, forever.

    The End.

Thanks for reading, if you did. I appreciate your time, and I hope you enjoyed it!

As ever, thanks for stopping by!

    Until next time,

    George

  3. Everyone has a retry story. Mine: an agent that retried a malformed request eleven times before anyone noticed, each attempt replaying the full conversation. The request was never going to succeed — a 400 doesn't heal — but the retry policy didn't care, because it only looked at "did it throw?"

    Our working rules now:

    • Retry timeouts, 429s and 5xx — with backoff, jitter, and the server's Retry-After winning over our schedule.
    • Never retry 400/401/403. Fail fast, surface it, fix the request.
    • A retry budget, not just a count: retries get a slice of the task's total budget, then the task fails honestly.
    • If it dies mid-stream, restart the message cleanly — never append to a half-generated answer.

What I haven't settled: provider 529s / overloaded errors during peak. Retry in place, or fail over to a different model immediately and accept the quality change?

    What's your rule set — and which error taught it to you?#ai #llm #discuss #api #software #coding #development #engineering #inclusive #community
What's your rule for when an LLM call should NOT be retried?

  4. Dementia

    Things to watch out for.

One method of oppressing a person with dementia is to insist they are not competent to decide if they should be living at home.
And then put them in care. (Locked ward.)

Then, if they raise concerns about an issue, only respond to the specific things they raise and ignore very obvious issues that are integral to their expressed concerns.

This failure to support the person in having their concerns addressed is dehumanising.

  5. One of the interesting things about using a chatbot is how naturally a conversation can continue.

I can ask a question, provide additional information, refer to something mentioned earlier, and expect the assistant to understand what I mean.

But while studying how chatbots work, I learned an important distinction:

A continuous conversation is something the application must create. It is not automatically provided by every individual LLM call.

What happens when I send a follow-up message?

    Imagine this conversation:

    User: My food hasn't arrived.

Assistant: Would you like to wait or request a refund?

    User: I want a refund.

The last message makes sense because of the earlier exchange.

But what happens if the application sends only “I want a refund” to the model?

The model may not have the information needed to understand the situation. The application needs to preserve the relevant conversation history and include it in the next request.

This was my first important takeaway: the application is responsible for maintaining the conversation.

Memory is not necessarily inside the model

Suppose I tell a chatbot that my preferred programming language is Java.

Later, I ask which language I prefer.

It might seem that the model has permanently learned something about me.

However, the application could have stored that preference, retrieved it when needed, and supplied it as context for the new request.

The process could look like this:

    User Information
    ↓
    Application Memory
    ↓
    Retrieve Relevant Information
    ↓
    Add to Current Context
    ↓
    LLM Generates Response

This is different from training the model and updating its learned parameters.

That distinction changed how I think about chatbot memory. The user experience may look like persistent memory even when the application is retrieving stored information and passing it to the model.

More context is not always better

Another concept that stood out to me was the context window.

A model can process only a limited amount of information in a given interaction.

An application might store hundreds or thousands of messages, but it does not necessarily need to send every message with every request.

It can select recent messages, summarize older exchanges, or retrieve only information relevant to the current question.

    Why does this matter?

Because repeatedly including a growing conversation can increase input token usage, which can affect cost and latency. It also consumes some of the model's available context capacity.

The important design question is not simply:

“How much context can I send?”

    It is:

“Which information does the model actually need to answer this request well?”

    Streaming is a user-experience decision

The lecture also connected next-token generation to streaming.

Instead of waiting for an entire answer before showing anything, an application can display generated content progressively as it arrives.

This can make an application feel more responsive, although it does not necessarily make the underlying model generate the complete response faster.

It is another reminder that the experience users see depends on application design, not just model capabilities.

    And then there is hallucination

A model can generate an answer that sounds convincing without the answer being factually correct.

Fluent language and verified information are two different things.

For a real application, this matters enormously.

Imagine a support chatbot answering questions about an order. It should retrieve the actual order status rather than inventing one. If an action requires authorization, the application must enforce that authorization instead of trusting a prompt alone.

Depending on the use case, retrieval, external APIs, tool calling, validation, guardrails, and evaluation can improve reliability.

They reduce certain risks, but they do not guarantee that every answer will be correct.

What I'm taking away as a software engineer

I'm beginning to see chatbot engineering as more than sending prompts to a model.

The application needs to manage conversation history, select context, retrieve relevant information, control access to tools, and handle responses appropriately.

These are familiar software engineering concerns applied to a new kind of capability.

My biggest takeaway from this lecture is:

A good chatbot does not merely generate responses. Its application must provide the right context and manage those responses responsibly.

As I continue studying Forward Deployed Engineering and Generative AI, I want to understand not only how models work, but also how to build reliable applications around them.#ai #llm #softwareengineering #software #coding #development #engineering #inclusive #community

  6. This is a submission for the Hacktoberfest Open-Source AI Challenge Week 4: Ghost in the Machine.

I am a B.A. History student at Burdwan University. For this challenge, I wanted to build something that connects my interest in History with my interest in AI.

My project is called Itihaser Bhoot (ইতিহাসের ভূত). It is an offline AI assistant that acts like a ghost of a historical figure. It answers History questions using only my own notes.

The idea is simple: an AI that knows what I have studied, shows where its answers come from, and admits when it does not know something.

    What I Built

Itihaser Bhoot is a local History question-answering system.

    It has three main goals:

    • Answer questions using only my personal History notes.
    • Quote the source passage so I can check the answer.
    • Stay silent or refuse to answer when the notes do not contain enough information.

I wanted to avoid answers that sound convincing but are not supported by my study material.

    Demo

The project runs locally on my laptop.

    Example workflow:

    1. I ask a History question.
    2. The system searches my notes for relevant passages.
    3. Gemma generates an answer based on the retrieved material.
    4. The answer includes the source passage.
    5. If the notes do not cover the question, the system refuses to answer.

The goal is not to make the AI sound knowledgeable about everything. It is to make it reliable within the limits of my notes.

    Code

GitHub repository: [Add your repository link here]

The repository contains the code and instructions for running the project locally.

    How I Built It

I used Gemma 3 1B through Ollama for local language generation.

For retrieving relevant passages from my notes, I used BM25. It helps find text that matches the question before the model generates an answer.

The system follows a retrieval-based approach:

    • My notes are the knowledge source.
    • BM25 retrieves relevant passages.
    • Gemma 3 1B generates an answer from the retrieved context.
    • The source passage is included for verification.
    • Questions without sufficient supporting material should be refused.

I built this on a laptop with 3.6 GB of RAM.

I wanted to see whether a small local model could be useful for a focused academic task without relying on a cloud API.

    Why Open Innovation Matters

For me, open innovation means making useful technology accessible to people who do not have powerful computers or paid AI subscriptions.

Itihaser Bhoot has a few practical advantages:

    • Offline: It runs without an internet connection once the required model is available locally.
    • Free per question: There is no cloud API charge for asking questions.
    • Runs on my laptop: I do not need expensive hardware for this focused task.
    • Private notes: My study notes stay on my own device.

As a student, these things matter to me. I want to experiment with AI while keeping control over my own study material.

    What Went Wrong

The project is still experimental, and I faced several problems.

The biggest challenge was answer quality. A small model can sometimes misunderstand a retrieved passage or produce an answer that goes beyond the available evidence.

Bengali also introduced additional difficulties. Bengali questions and notes do not always produce reliable retrieval results. The model can struggle with Bengali phrasing, historical terminology, and generating natural Bengali answers.

Another challenge is refusal behavior. Even when the notes do not contain an answer, the model may try to generate one. I need to improve the system's ability to recognize when the retrieved evidence is insufficient.

I am still testing these limitations rather than claiming they are solved.

Prize Category: Best Use of Gemma

I am submitting Itihaser Bhoot for Best Use of Gemma.

I used Gemma 3 1B as a local language model for a specific academic purpose. The project is not intended to replace textbooks, teachers, or historical research.

It is an experiment in building a small, private, and evidence-based History assistant using open tools.

I hope to improve its retrieval quality, Bengali support, and refusal behavior as I continue working on it.

  7. #UniLife #Lesbian #Wound
So I had to take Jennie with me this morning the doctor's office. She watched some anime on her phone while we waited. I watched the first episode of last season's Taskmaster.
So I was getting my foot wound treated. They had to debride the wound, that means cut away the dead or ill flesh so I'm left only with healthy flesh, then they wrapped it up, and then they gave me a air-cast which I have to wear for a couple of weeks. I also have to stay off the foot as much as possible. Afterwards I took Jennie to A&W for breakfast, bacon & Eggers and hash browns before I took her to school, I had to hobble into the main office to sign her in. Since then I've been in bed. Hello boredom!

  8. Charmy’s Army in “DEE SEAST – The Hell of the Ball” – Part 4: The Ethics of the Undead

<<< Previous COMIC strip NEXT COMIC STRIP >>>

Our fourth comic strip delves into the bizarre social politics of our newly integrated society. The girls are standing alone, processing the fact that zombies are very much still part of the local ecosystem. The ponytail girl mentions she was planning on dressing up as a zombie for next week’s highly anticipated Halloween Ball—only to be swiftly reprimanded by the blonde! “How offensive! Zombies are people too!” To which her cynical friend delivers the ultimate grammatical reality check: “You mean WERE people too.” The existential weight of politically correct terminology for the reanimated dead leaves them with only one proper exclamation: “Holy macca noodle…”

The afternoon sun cast long, amber shadows across the town square. Charmy and Dee had vanished down a side alley toward the municipal park, leaving the two girls leaning against the painted wooden railing of the municipal gazebo. The quiet of the town was almost surreal. Pigeons pecked at breadcrumbs near the park benches; children rode bicycles along the paved trails; a street sweeper hummed lazily along the curb. It looked like an idyllic postcard of small-town America, completely masking the fact that just five minutes ago, an actual walking corpse had been drooling near their espresso cups.

“I still can’t wrap my head around it,” the ponytail girl confessed, kicking a loose pebble into the grass. “I spent forty-five dollars at the pop-up spirit store last Saturday. I bought liquid latex, fake blood made from corn syrup and red dye number forty, prosthetic bone fragments, and a torn flannel shirt. I was going to do the whole nine yards for the annual Halloween Ball. The classic Romero stagger, the dragged left leg, the vacant stare, the works.”

The blonde turned on her instantly, eyes flashing with righteous indignation, her hands planted firmly on her hips. “Are you out of your mind? Have you completely lost your moral compass? You can’t wear that!”

The ponytail girl froze, her shoe suspended an inch above the grass. “Why not? It’s Halloween! It’s the one night of the year when everyone dresses up as ghouls, vampires, werewolves, and the undead! It’s tradition!”

“That was tradition before the invasion,” the blonde lectured, shaking her index finger with schoolmarm authority. “Context matters! Before the outbreak, zombies were fictional archetypes created by cinema and folklore. Now? Now they are our neighbors! They work in our commercial supply chains! They pay municipal parking meters! Dressing up as an undead shambler today is cultural insensitivity at its absolute worst! Zombies are people too!”

The ponytail girl stared at her companion, her jaw dropping open in sheer, unadulterated disbelief. She let out a laugh that sounded like a tea kettle hitting maximum boil. “Zombies are people too?! Have you suffered a traumatic brain injury while we were standing here? Did the airborne rot fumes finally seep into your prefrontal cortex?”

“I am simply advocating for basic social decorum,” the blonde insisted, lifting her chin with an air of profound superiority. “Dee is out here trying to assimilate into civil society, overcoming massive systemic prejudice and rampant biological decay, and you want to reduce her painful medical condition to a cheap costume for a Saturday night mixer? It’s callous!”

“Medical condition?!” the ponytail girl practically shrieked, throwing her head back toward the sky. “She isn’t dealing with chronic seasonal allergies or a mild case of eczema! She’s legally, biologically, and technically deceased! The heart has ceased to beat! The brainwaves are flatlining on every known medical monitor! You don’t say zombies are people too—you say zombies WERE people too! Past tense! Completed action! Finished chapter!”

The blonde opened her mouth to mount a blistering rebuttal, but the words withered on her tongue. She closed her mouth, looked down at her shoes, glanced sideways at the empty alleyway where Dee had shuffled away, and then looked back up. Her moral superiority melted away into a hollow, glazed stare as the cold, inescapable logic of the English language collided with modern etiquette.

“Holy macca noodle…” the blonde whispered under her breath, the sheer absurdity of the philosophical rabbit hole collapsing on top of her.

“Thank you,” the ponytail girl said smugly, crossing her arms over her chest. “Finally, a shred of cognitive sanity returns to the premises. There is no political correctness for a creature that literally had to be reminded not to eat the cashier’s pen. If someone’s skin is peeling off like dry wallpaper and their primary nutritional intake consists of outdated T-bone steaks from the deep discount bin, I am fully within my rights to use past-tense pronouns.”

“Okay, fine,” the blonde admitted, running both hands through her hair with a defeated groan. “Grammatically speaking, you have a point. But socially speaking, you’re still stepping on a massive landmine. If you show up to that dance dressed as a reanimated corpse, and Dee walks in as Charmy’s date, what do you think is going to happen? Do you think she’s going to appreciate the artistic nuance of your fake prosthetic ribcage?”

The ponytail girl paused. Her smirk faded, replaced by a sudden, chilling realization. Her eyes darted toward the community center at the end of the block, where a large vinyl banner advertised the upcoming Halloween Ball in bold, festive lettering.

“Wait…” the ponytail girl said, her voice dropping down an octave. “You don’t actually think Charmy would bring her to the dance, do you? To an indoor event with mood lighting, punch bowls, and a crowded dance floor? That’s an absolute recipe for a public safety incident.”

“Charmy is completely devoted to her,” the blonde warned, stepping closer. “He takes her to the diner. He walks her down the boulevard. If there is a major social gathering in this town, you can bet your entire savings account that he’s already bought two tickets. And if you think a minor detail like an absence of vital signs is going to keep him from showing her off under the strobe lights, you haven’t been paying attention.”

The two friends stood in the fading light, the absurdity of the afternoon giving way to a new and far more terrifying prospect: the imminent social collision awaiting them on the dance floor.

  10. Another wild and intense here last night.
We all live in underground cities, boringly clean and entirely white. Then, Poutine infiltrates (himself) the city and triggers a chain reaction by throwing a ball pen in one of the laundry machines (why not?). Everything starts to blow up, literally, like balloons inflating. The city pops out to the outside world (insert big 'plop' sound here) which is a field of ruins. People also inflates like balloons. Some of them only one limbs, others become grotesque monsters larger than skyscrapers (I'm fine in case you wonder). Then I realise I can heal people by playing music (obvious, isn't it?). So do I, while encouraging everyone to join me with every piece of crap we can gather to make noise.

  12. The role of the scientist is to search for the truth, not attempt to prove a belief. In Hermann Hesse's Siddhartha, the young wanderer, Govinda, is cautioned not to go looking for something but rather to find what is there ("... as a result of your seeking you cannot find"). Science has strict processes for judging what constitutes knowledge. An individual's musings constitute only the beginning, the creation of hypotheses. Testing of hypotheses, followed by peers' careful evaluation and rigorous critiques, may ultimately lead to theories. A scientific theory is not "just" a theory; it represents a very high level of knowledge acquisition. Religious belief is different.

  15. Well, some time ago, and on more than one occasion, I've started trying to get up to speed on #micropython so that I can code up the range of #Arduino, #ESP32 and #Raspi devices I've acquired over the years.

I'm a real sucker for buying micro electronics that I could do great things with if only I had the patience and time.

Well, here we go again. I've bought a #CYD (yes I had no idea what that meant until I looked it up. Cheap, Yellow, Device apparently.) Circuit board is yellow and it cost £11 so yeah, CYD it is.

Time to hit the tutorial sites...

Seven minutes total from walking in the doors to walking out: poll worker at the doors directed me to the correct table (alphabetical), poll worker at the table checked my voter registration card and my driver’s license against the roll, handed me the form and explained (make only one selection for each of three categories), I had to wait for an open privacy screen voting “booth”, and then I had to wait while 4 people ahead of me had their paper form submitted to the tabulator. Saw that it was accepted and I stepped out of the building. Then I spent an equal amount of time talking to a dog owner.

Woo, the reprogrammable recoiler I've been lugging around since the early game is finally imprinted! Turns out reprogrammable recoilers need a large chunk of energy to initially program, more than my various chem cells and solar cells could provide.

Thankfully, using the standard lifehack of hitting a Putus Templar over the head with a large flaming electrified axe and taking their stuff, I got my hands on a couple lava-powered cells that can (barely) handle the recoiler programming.

All that to just get a Six Day Stilt recoiler, the only location that was still mildly inconvenient to get to and not covered by my half dozen other recoilers.

  20. (from Women Against the Far Right Bristol)

"Across the country bands of far-right thugs are organising into vigilante groups. Receiving thousands of pounds in public donations, these anti-migrant patrols harass people of colour, demanding to see identity documents.

They have no cause of suspicion other than the shade of a person’s skin or accent. They have no legitimate authority other than racist intimidation. Rather predictably Reform UK’s, Richard Tice, has previously called for more of these racist patrols.

These groups claim they protect women yet the this Guardian article shows not only the sickening hypocrisy but also their true colours.

It comes after almost half of those convicted in the 2024 rioter where previously reported for domestic abuse AND 1 in 5 people arrested after the 2024 riots have SINCE been reported for domestic abuse.

This was never about protecting women. This is about the far-right using women’s bodies to justify their racism and hate.

    Challenge their narrative, fight back"

  21. I've always been dubious of the idea that an AI bubble popping would a lot of stranded hardware. the neoclouds COULD use their older GPUs for lots of things that aren't frontier models, but I don't think they're nimble enough. Meanwhile, hyperscalers like Microsoft are busy doing just that to speed up database queries.

GPU acceleration isn't new; nor are GPU-accelerated databases but they've never been mainstream @andrewbrust notes. you need a second SQL engine or switch to an engine most people haven't heard of. Microsoft putting it right into the Fabric platform as a switch speeds up existing SQL queries with no editing required.

The really clever bit: you don't need the latest, most expensive GPUs to speed up your database so it can keep up with all the extra queries agents are throwing at it. you get faster queries and Microsoft gets more life out of older GPUs, Tino Tereshko tells me.

Not only are older GPUs not getting scrapped faster (a suggestion that was doing the rounds last year); so many teams at Microsoft who aren't working on frontier models have ideas to use them that there's internal competition, which may gate availability of database acceleration, according to Conor Cunningham (who covered the research behind this at Fabcon). There's definitely demand!

  22. New for O.D.I.N.: build your agent in conversation. The woman in the grey coat asks what you have seen, puts two or three files in front of you and opens your agent in the character generator. A free skill for Claude and ChatGPT.

The generator still does the maths, and you can change every page there. The file lives only in the link and stays in your browser.

  23. the last update broke my music player elisa on kde. it freezes right after the first song played and that is ... not optimal. i had to look out for a new one that handles large local libraries and found the terminal app kew. normally i am selecting the albums by album art so only having a list of the names is very irritating, now i have to "remember" the name of the album i want to listen to. but hey, better than nothing, right? 😇 #kew #elisa #linux #musicplayer #radagast #vermis #dungeonsynth

    tech bro = Nazi

Hacker News commenters want to keep those who would protest their oppression busy with forced labor, "re-educate" them, exterminate those who refuse or who you consider worthless.

Justify it with "rationalism", only ever considering the economic aspect, never other aspects … like ethics or "doing things for fun".

  25. Monday Monster: Haliborb

    for use with Dragonbane RPG.

    Description:
This bizarre floating creature seems as if it would be at home in another dimension entirely. It has the sleek, streamlined body of a halibut except its head has one large eyeball in the middle surrounded by smaller eyeballs on whisker-like tentacle stalks. The creature’s toothy mouth is situated below the massive center eye. The creature is only medium size, however. If it weren’t flying about and intelligent, one would almost dismiss it as a magical anomaly.

    Resistance:
Immune to illusion, charm, and mind control effects. The creature is surrounded with a magical field that gives it Armor 3. It also gives a Bane on any Missile or ranged spell attacks while the field is active. Disabling two or more eye stalks removes this field or when the creature reaches 10 hp or less.

Any creature seeing a Haliborb for the first time must make a WIL roll. Failure means the character must roll on the Fear table due to the creature’s reality-bending nature. After the initial encounter, characters need not ever make this roll again for the Haliborb.

This creature is highly intelligent and will negotiate, but its motives are often unfathomable and alien in nature.

    Ferocity: 3  Size: Medium.
Movement: 12 (Flying or Swimming) If somehow grounded, 2.  Armor: 3  HP: 24

    MONSTER ATTACKS

    D6 Attacks:

    1. Bend Reality: Being in the presence of this creature is enough to drive some characters mad. All creatures within 10 meters of the Haliborb must make a WIL roll or become Disheartened and lose 1d6 WP. If already Disheartened, choose or roll a different condition.
    2. Main Eye Beam: One target within 20 meters is seared with a ray of light hotter than the sun. If the target is struck with the beam it takes 2d10 burning damage. Any creature or character in a straight line between Haliborb
    3. Halihaboob: Haliborb sends out a wall of dust, debris, spores, and arcane energy in a line 10 meters wide, 4 meters deep, and 10 meters high that deals 1d10 damage and afflicts a hacking respiratory disease Virulence 10 (See Dragonbane Core Rules.) The haboob travels 60 meters before dissipating. Anything in the path of the wall takes a Bane on their Evade roll and this attack cannot be parried. Armor has no effect against this wall.
    4. Pew! The Haliborb’s smaller eyes fire beams of intense light that converge on one target within 20 meters that inflict 2d6 lightning damage. This attack can be parried as a missile weapon.
    5. Pew-pew Pew! The Haliborb fires its smaller eye stalks hitting every target within 16 meters for 1d8 fire damage. This attack can be parried as a missile weapon.
    6. Tail Slap! One target within 2 meters is slapped for 1d6 bludgeoning damage and knocked prone until the start of their turn.

SPECIAL: If Haliborb falls below 10 HP on its next turn it will abruptly give off a blinding flash accompanied with a loud POP as it leaves its current dimension and goes to one where it is safe. Anyone looking on the Haliborb when this happens must roll AGI to cover their eyes/avert their gaze or be blinded for 3 turns. Anyone within 4 meters must also make a CON roll to avoid being deafened for one Stretch.

  26. Good morning Japan

Tokyo, I struggle, I complain, I’m never in sync with the rhythm…

And there’s this feeling that reality is slipping away from me, that I’m becoming a machine pitted against the machine. Only when I got home did I realise that perhaps this was my subject all along: not Japan itself, which I don’t really understand, but the distance between me and its people, the gap between two cultures.
