It seems I'm a bit optimistic about battery life. I read that starting to die after 4 years isn't that bad after all. Especially as I'm using it a lot, almost daily. Probably reached over 1000 charge cycles from almost fully discharged to fully charged.

Well well well, my laptop battery suddenly decided it won't last more than 2h from fully charged, and both the bios and the software are telling that its health is "poor".
I imagine that as usual changing the battery is a nightmare and cost a leg. And of course I wasn't planning to buy a new one so quickly (I bought it 4 years ago). Each time I have to change a laptop just for the battery it also upsets me because all the other components are still fine, that's such a waste !

I thought I could speak here a little more about my light simulation / 3d renderer project. First thing first: introduction.
I call it #MinMinLight . The name has two origins. One is the name given by aboriginal Australians to a light phenomenon, which is what it is all about. The other is the min operator in signed distance fields, which is how I implement shapes in that project, used to merge several shapes together, hence "MinMinLight" is a play on words intended to mean "the union of many lights".
The project has no definite goal, and no use case I can think of. It's just a sandbox where I learn and experiment about #light #color #computergraphics #computervision #photography #programming , and where I code for the joy of coding.
I've started it over and given it up again and again since university, and although it's useless in itself the knowledge gained through it served me well a few times in my professional life.
Obviously it's 100% #cprogramming and #humanmade .
I'll take care to tag posts in this thread with #MinMinLight so you can filter easily. Your likes help keep that thread alive. Random post frequency depending on my mood and progress. At least I have a few weeks worth of work in this iteration to start the thread. -

I've spent most of the week working on my light simulator / 3d renderer.
One thing I've been able to reproduce and I'm happy about is the CIE chromaticity diagram.
In previous versions of that work I was already implementing conversion from light spectrum to sRgb color space, but I had never plot that particular diagram myself.
I'm glad I did this time because it allowed me to realise that it's wrong. If you know what this diagram represents you'll probably notice the spectral locus shape is wrong, in particular in low wavelengths, and even completely diverges when approaching ultraviolet.
That was interesting to understand why. It's not a bug in my implementation, it comes from approximation in the calculation. Now I'm trying to see if it can't be corrected.
If you don't know what this diagram is, it is a representation of all the colors visible by an average human eye. The triangle contains all the colors representable with the sRgb color space (the one commonly used by our elecronic devices), and the U shape extends to what a human can perceive (the U closes with a straight line at the bottom, not represented here).
Also, if you compare with the same diagram in Wikipedia for example and wonder why the sRgb colors are much brigther in mine: the color space is 3D and one can choose arbitrarily how to project the luminance dimension. In the diagram shown in Wikipedia they choose a constant luminance, while in mine I choose the maximum possible luminance for each color. -
I've decided to change a bit my strategy about Kanji study.
So far I've started to study the next level only after achieving a perfect score on all previous levels at once. That's not imposed by the software I'm using, it's just an extra constraint I've put on myself. Now I'll break that rule for the last level. Today I've been able to reach at least 85% accuracy on each first 9 levels at once, and I'll move to the last 10th level anyway.
There are two reasons. First, I'm worried about my Nintendo DS. The last time I've charged it it refused to charge at first and then charged at the second attempt only. It's 20+ years old, I wouldn't be surprised if it dies tomorrow. Second, I'm worried about what's going to be next year for me. Ending in a state where I'll never be able to complete the last level of that study after pouring so much effort into would be truly dramatic.
Then, better quickly ensure completion before perfection: I prefer to start the last level right now. That should lead me to the end (as defined by the software) of the study in January. And from there keep working on my personal goal of a perfect score on all kanjis at once for as long as I'm able to keep studying. I'm still confident I can reach that goal within next year given my progression so far, if nothing comes in the way.
