  1. The introduction of new technology is always disruptive to old markets, and particularly to those copyright owners whose works are sold through well-established distribution mechanisms. History has shown that time and market forces often provide equilibrium in balancing interests, whether the new technology be a player piano, a copier, a tape recorder, a video recorder, a personal computer, a karaoke machine or an MP3 player.

Our obsessions with history and prophecy perhaps reflect an inability to comprehend the implications of geological time....Past and future require certain limitations and symmetries to be meaningful -- there must be a plot or at least a story. But time is really not much like a story. It is more like an ocean current that rises from imperfectly perceived depths and flows into unseen distances.

  21. Wildfires close all access points to #BWCAW

    By WDIO
    Updated: July 13, 2026

    "Wildfires force #BWCA to close

"According to the Superior National Forest, starting tomorrow, July 14, all public access points to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) will close until the three active wildfires within the BWCAW are contained and the risk to the public has decreased.

"Since Tuesday, July 7th, Superior National Forest has experienced up to 19 wildfires, with new ones emerging daily. Hot, dry, and windy weather have caused them to make this decision.

"The Forest Service has automatically processed refunds for Overnight Paddle, Overnight Motor, Overnight Hiking, and Day Use Motor reservations through July 17th.

"Permits on the BWCAW have been cancelled and the Forest Service is contacting cooperators and current permit holders. Contact your cooperator to discuss your trip and possible options; permits in other areas are still available.

"During a press conference, Drew Stroberg with the US Forest Service said the only way the BWCA fires will be completely put out is when snow hits the ground. [!!!]

" 'We decided to close the boundary waters one for us to clear out the rest of the boundary waters, it was not already closed given our current staffing levels. That would take us about a week. going through lake by lake, checking each of the campsites to make sure that nobody was there,' said Stroberg.

"The BWCAW spans 1 million acres, so by evacuating now, you support public safety by keeping efforts focused on wildfires. More information on the emergency order can be found here.
US Forest Service- Superior National Forest

"Around 1,900 wilderness campsites are included in this closure. If you’re looking for alternative places to explore, Superior National Forest offers 23 developed campgrounds, 18 rustic campgrounds, and 254 backcountry campsites outside the wilderness. Many of these sites are along remote canoe routes and offer quiet, scenic experiences with no fees, permits or reservations needed."
