The dream ended in me rolling out of bed, hiding under it, my grandma coming to get me to my feet and then me realising I have a massive wire band gold ring on my index finger.

Then I realised it was a dream and that's not my grandma.

Then woke up for real and checked my hand and discovered I was awake.

Towards the it was like inception. I kept waking up and checking my hands for my ring. And there kept being another ring or two.

Each morning my neighbour with mental health problems screams for a minute. It sounds like yelling while coughing while suffocating while vomiting. It's scary at first but I kind of got used to it. It generally happens late in the morning, but today it was early enough to wake me up. Except that the room I woke up was my actual bedroom with a slightly different arrangement of all the furniture. And *that* scared me even more and actually woke me up. Yes, I was having a nightmare inside a nightmare. Maybe the weirdest was that for a few seconds the real me tried to comfort the dreaming me, "hey, look, all the furniture's is messed up, it's just a dream!".

Somewhere in last night's story adventures in another timeline, I received some treatment that makes Harrison Bergeron seem kind and quaint and Genosha a nice place to visit on holiday... administered with less rancor and ceremony than Frye's job chip.

As with dreams, the details and story points have faded quickly, but for this one the processing I suffered there is still quite clear. I can almost feel it now, standing in the kitchen in the morning light.

I was head down in some project, when the CEO, a serious woman in her 40's, pulled me aside and urgently told me,

"We just figured out that our head developer has been secretly working for our competitor, Bearly Working. There are suspicious commits in the code. We think he put in backdoors in our shipped versions."

Then suddenly time jumped forward.

A recurring location in my nightmares is a rural county full of dangerous rednecks and white supremacists in Southwest #Virginia that doesn't actually exist. It's placement is around Franklin County where I lived for several years in my late teens and early 20s, specifically between Boones Mill and Rocky Mount, but it is explicitly not Franklin County. I don't know why my mind made up a fictional county or why it constantly pops back up on a regular basis.

Now I know what colour fear is …

Do we / can we overcome fear? Or do we just learn to manage it?

I ‘fear’ lots of things. They don’t all necessarily hinder my daily life, but who’s going to tell me they don’t fear a herd of rampaging bull elephants? How would you plan on overcoming that fear? It’s bound to cause at least an inkling of trepidation, surely?

Even ‘managing’ fear in this scenario would prove a tad difficult, I’d suggest. Perhaps it would be best to simply ‘accept’ the fear.

I think that’s what I do. I don’t overcome, I accept.

What follows is a bit of a cheat. It’s a post, in part reproduced, from over two years ago, but sort of illustrates the above.

Well, not the bull elephants, exactly. They refused to walk up the stairs and squeezing them into the lift was out of the question …

Within reason, I actually enjoy accepting my fears.

For instance, I’ve always been afraid of heights. I don’t suffer from nightmares, but one recurring dream has me faced with a drop of about only thirty feet from the roof of a house. And yet, twenty years ago, I did this:

The Macau Tower is 338 metres in height. Why did I do it? What did it take to persuade me to face my fear?

It took only six words, passed in jest:
“Do you fancy doing that, Colin?”

I didn’t need asking twice – I guess you could say I’m a bit of a foolhardy show-off! Of course I was scared. I was scared witless if truth be known. (WITless, I said 😉) However, the buzz and smug satisfaction I felt when I got back onto terra firma easily trumped my fear.

Sometimes though, it’s the plain, ordinary and innocent that creates a fear no man can describe.

“Does my bum look big in this dress, dear?”

Uh oh! Where’s that herd of rampaging bull elephants?
