A few days ago they announced a [“cocktail météorologique explosif”](https://www.rts.ch/info/suisse/2024/article/un-cocktail-meteorologique-explosif-attendu-samedi-en-suisse-romande-alerte-meteosuisse-28553427.html) but the result I saw from my vantage point was some medium rain, and plenty of rain and thunder. The thunder was constant for quite a while.
When I saw the weather warnings my fear was that we would end up with hail. I have seen the damage that hail can do to nature. It shreds trees, destroys veluxes and more. That we had rain and lightning is fine.
In Valais the Rhone overflowed, as well as in Tessin and apparently there was a torrential flow from the Col Du Simplon.
Rivers in Valais are overflowing but that’s ordinary. The Rhone has a flood plain. People built in the flood plain so when heavy rain falls it rises, and as it rises it reaches homes, and so people are affected. To make things worse plenty of new roads, new buildings and more surfaces are switched from nature, trees and more, to tarmac and concrete. When rain does fall it has nowhere to go, but into the first low lying ground it finds, whether basements, parkings, or other.
## Fear of Hail
My fear was hail, because when hail falls it shreds everything it hits. Trees are thrashed, car windows are broken, veluxes break, and upstairs floors get soaked. Luckily we didn’t have this. I have personally experienced the destructive power of hail on veluxes.
They say that [we should expect damage](https://www.letemps.ch/suisse/vaud/christophe-salamin-meteorologue-il-faut-s-attendre-a-de-la-casse-peut-etre-meme-pire-que-cette-semaine) but the reason for that damage, is partially due to the weather dumping more rain, faster than usual, but it’s also due to urbanisation, building where rivers used to flood, and removing gardens and more from other parts.
## Bétonification / Tarmacificiation
As I walk from village to village I see that where individual houses once stood you have tarmac parkings and concrete buildings and gardens are an afterthought. When it rains the rain that would have fallen onto a tree, and then dripped to the ground, is now falling straight to tarmac, tile roofs and concrete. Where houses were once slightly above the nearby road, they are now flat against it.
## Nowhere for Water to Flow
When rain falls it can’t pool in a garden, or rest in a tree before trickling to the ground. It hits the hard surfaces and flows like a river, down roads, into basements, garages and other places. It flows through homes as well.
## Invisible Problem Due to Droughts
We have had five years of drought. During that time a lot was built, and now that the drought is on a break people are realising that they have built where rivers want to flow. They have found that the building they did on the hills, is affecting areas downstream, such as in Morges, and along the Rhone.
## Volatile Weather
Yes, the weather is more volatile, but nature has also been replaced, so that water flows straight from where it lands into rivers, which causes flooding. The point is that the weather is becoming more extreme, so the coverage is partly right, but by being alarmist about the weather, it deflects from the responsability of developers in regards to how they build where they shouldn’t, without considering rainfall and water flow.

## And Finally
Human activity has released carbon dioxide and methane into the sky and it will take at least two hundred years for that carbon dioxide to degrade. In that time rainfall patterns will shift, which will lead to more droughts and floods. By building in the wrong places, without thinking of rain, we are amplifying the effects of heavy rain, rather than mitigating them.
Weather forecasters sensationalise the effects, without speaking about how to mitigate and avoid the risks. That the alert went up to five yesterday shows what an effect urbanisation has had.
Weather weirding does have an impact on weather, but so does bad urban planning. With approrpiate urban planning flash floods and heavy rain are taken into consideration to mitigate risk.
As I write this I see that Canal9, a local TV station has been taken offline due to flooding in Valais.
And finally, although the rain might be a lot heavier than usual, urbanisation does play a role, and this should be discussed, and measures should be taken to mitigate such risks.

There was an excellent documentary that aired in 2012 called Global Weirding, about #WeatherWeirding and #ClimateCatastrophe
It really stayed with me, as it all made sense.
Of course, we did nothing to stop what was and is now happening.
Oddly enough, it's no longer available to watch.

For five years it was sunny almost every day in Switzerland. It was sunny so often that the water tables declined and village fountains dried up, as did fields. Clouds of dust could be seen rising when tractors worked the fields. It’s because of this excellent weather, for years in a row, that I stopped looking at weather apps.
Now, weather is interesting again. Two or three weeks ago Geneva flooded. A few days ago Zermatt flooded, and, now Morges has flooded too. So many places are flooding. This is due to weather weirding on one side, but also climate change on the other. With more heat the clouds can store more water, and when they meet a cold front a deluge may ensue.
The other issue is that villages are replacing villas with apartment buildings. Where there was grass, and gardens, and trees, you have tarmac and cement. The result is that water can no longer drain into the soil. It runs down hill until it finds basements, garages and other places.
it flooded the streets of Morges yesterday, and parkings in Geneva a few weeks ago, and the streets of Zermatt just a few days ago. Because of the droughts people forgot that water needs to be able to flee, to go into empty fields, and rivers, and gardens.
A tree captures water before it hits the ground. A few weeks ago I was hiking in a forest and the trees kept us dry. It might have been raining but the leaf canopy kept us dry.
If you remove trees you increase not only the speed with which rain hits the ground but also the speed at which it runs off from the ground. That runoff looks like nothing higher up but once it hits Morges, or Geneva, it floods.
Gardens with trees also help to slow down the flow of water. A garden can absorb rain, and if it can’t absord it then puddles form. Trees suck up some of that moisture and store it. The rain might be heavy but it has plenty of places where it can be buffered.
In contrast, as villages replace every green space in villages with apartments and tarmac parkings, so the opportunity for rain to flee, to be absorbed is gone. That’s when flooding occurs. That’s when underground parkings and ground floors flood.
## And Finally
Although it is frustrating to have rain forecast for every weekend this summer it is nice to see how nature is thriving, thanks to the rain. For years nature was on survival mode. I noticed that the dirt under an underpass has now been replaced with nature thriving. Nature has really benefitted from all the rain that has fallen this year.

I'm having trouble finding fault with #Niri + #DankLinux. Basically it's beautiful, functional, lightweight, and just really nice. Overview is fantastic, the bar is easy to arrange with lots of widgets and stuff, and the program launcher and Dock are fantastic. Four paws up from the Owlbear. Niri's .kdl files are kinda annoying to edit compared to, say, a toml yaml or INI file. Other than that, full marks.
I finally have something other than #Gnome I'm comfortable working in, which is kinda weirding me out.
Obviously it's time to completely blow up my new comfortable workspace and try something else. Can't get all complacent, I might get actual writing done.

Die Goldenen Zitronen wurden 1984 im Umfeld der Hafenstraße in Hamburg gegründet. Schorsch Kamerun (Gesang), Aldo Moro (Gitarre/Bass), Ale Sexfeind (Schlagzeug) und Ted Gaier (Gitarre/Bass) machten Fun-Punk und Polit-Punk, wurden zunehmend avangardistischer und gelten als Mitbegründer der „Hamburger Schule“. Mit ihrer Single „Am Tag als Thomas Anders starb“ erlangten sie 1986 große mediale Aufmerksamkeit. Es soll die erfolgreichste deutsche Indie-Single sein.
Dabei handelt es sich um eine Punk-Coverversion des Schlagers „Am Tag als Conny Kramer starb“ von Juliane Werding aus dem Jahr 1972, welcher wiederum eine Coverversion des Folk-Rock-Songs „The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down“ von The Band (1969) war. Im Original ein Anti-Kriegs- bzw. Anti-Drogensong machten Die Goldenen Zitronen daraus ein Anti-Thomas-Anders-Lied, der zu der Zeit mit Modern Talking sehr erfolgreich war. Unterstützt wurden die Zitronen dabei von Rod Gonzales am Banjo, der bekanntlich heute bei den Ärzten praktiziert.
Und auch der musikalische Partner von Thomas Anders bekommt Erwähnung auf der Single, nämlich im Lied „Zitronenmord“ auf der B-Seite. „Zitronenmord“ handelt vom mysteriösen Ableben der bekannten Hamburger Musiker Udo Lindenberg, Achim Reichel, Dieter Bohlen, Freddy Quinn und Jutta Weinhold, „sie lagen alle tot mit ’ner Zitrone im Maul da“.
Ich habe Die Goldenen Zitronen leider nicht so intensiv verfolgt. Ich habe mal das Album „Porsche, Genscher, Hallo HSV“ von 1987 als CD besessen, aber die ist im Laufe der Zeit leider verschütt gegangen. Darauf ist ja der zweite Zitronen-Hit, „Für immer Punk“. Der lief häufig am Ende in meiner Stammdisco, bevor dann zu „Streetlife“ von Randy Crawford das Licht anging.
Die Goldenen Zitronen sind nicht bei Fun-Punk- und Rockabilly-Songs stehen geblieben, sondern haben sich mit den Jahren weiterentwickelt. In späteren Veröffentlichungen werden sie elektronischer und entdecken No-Wave, Hip-Hop, Krautrock und Jazz für ihre Musik. Wie oben bereits erwähnt, haben sie auch auf die Bands der „Hamburger Schule“ Einfluss genommen.

Ich habe Die Goldenen Zitronen leider nicht so intensiv verfolgt. Ich habe mal das Album „Porsche, Genscher, Hallo HSV“ von 1987 als CD besessen, aber die ist im Laufe der Zeit leider verschütt gegangen. Darauf ist ja der zweite Zitronen-Hit, „Für immer Punk“. Der lief häufig am Ende in meiner Stammdisco, bevor dann zu „Streetlife“ von Randy Crawford das Licht anging.
Die Goldenen Zitronen sind nicht bei Fun-Punk- und Rockabilly-Songs stehen geblieben, sondern haben sich mit den Jahren weiterentwickelt. In späteren Veröffentlichungen werden sie elektronischer und entdecken No-Wave, Hip-Hop, Krautrock und Jazz für ihre Musik. Wie oben bereits erwähnt, haben sie auch auf die Bands der „Hamburger Schule“ Einfluss genommen.
Die Goldenen Zitrone bestehen heute immer noch, von der Originalbesetzung sind Schorsch Kamerun und Ted Gaier noch dabei. Nach dem letzten Album „More Than A Feeling“ (2019) erschien 2024 zum 40. Jubiläum eine Best-Of-Compilation auf 3 LPs, darunter ist auch „Am Tag als Thomas Anders starb“.

There are so many good Science Fiction shows on AppleTV+. It’s a little crazy. Severance, For All Mankind, Silo, Foundation, Invasion. They are all killer shows. The latest is Constellation, which is weirding me out like mad. There will be eight episodes in this first season. Episode Seven was released today.
So there I was, trying to watch the new episode while sitting up in bed. Suddenly, without warning or provocation, the video started lagging. It went from, huh? to bad to worse quickly. I closed the app and opened it again. When it launched the episode it crashed. I tried again. It wouldn’t launch the episode at all.
I did what The IT Crowd always said to do, I turned my computer off and on again. Reboot city, population me. Did it work? Nope. When the episode tried to launch, the AppleTV+ app crashed. Over and over again.
Shit.
I tried to outsmart it. I know, thought me, I’ll watch something else on another app for a while. That will make AppleTV+ jealous so that it will work for me the next time I try it.
Success. Five minutes or so of Penny Dreadful season two episode five was all it took to guilt AppleTV+ into working again. I was able to finish the new episode of Constellation.
Don’t be a jerk, AppleTV+. I needs me my Sci Fi.
