  2. “To mark the impending 40th anniversary of the BBC Domesday Project's release, the UK's Centre for #ComputingHistory #CCH hosted a celebration at its museum on September 19, bringing together several of the original team members responsible for the system. One was Mike Tibbetts, an assistant to Peter Armstrong, the #BBC producer behind the project. Tibbetts revealed that the UK's domestic intelligence service, MI5, took an interest in the system, but "they didn't understand a word of what we were doing!"

"And on one occasion, Peter and I had to give a presentation, or Peter gave the presentation to [former prime minister] Margaret Thatcher, and well, I'm not sure she understood what we were doing either…"

What they were doing was compiling a trove of data that will prove invaluable to historians in the years to come, even if the politicians of the era looked nervously on at the amount of data being handed over to the public. The #DomesdayProject was intended to be a modern version of the #DomesdayBook, compiled after the 1066 #Norman invasion of #England.”

  3. “The US says it is closely monitoring the death of an employee at a Siberian "anti-plague" laboratory from what Russian officials are calling pneumonia of an unknown origin.

The fatality in the eastern city of #Irkutsk last week has sparked conflicting statements from regional politicians and federal authorities in #Russia.”

    First plague; Then war.

  4. “Raspberry Pi has raised prices for the 2 GB Pi 4 and Pi 5, citing rapidly rising memory costs.

Both models now cost $12.50 more, taking the 2 GB Pi 4 to $67.50 and the equivalent Pi 5 to $77.50. Readers with long memories may recall the $35 Pi 4. Its price "temporarily" rose to $45 during the pandemic and has since climbed further.

The board maker reported a 90 percent increase in first-half revenue to $256.9 million, while gross profit rose 79 percent to $59.4 million. Gross profit per board increased 53 percent to $12.20, helped by price rises and stocks of memory bought at lower prices in 2025. Raspberry Pi says that inventory advantage has largely been exhausted.”

  5. Reading the #IanDuncan essay on the Boi-Genius AI crowd.

William Golding wrote #LordOfTheFlies to warn readers of the dynamics of strong personalities, enclosed societies, stunted minds without grown-ups.

The reason the essay is so good? The outlines of themes Golding explored; The danger of adolescent minds in a modern #SiliconValley context intersecting an #AI #tech bubble.

    Brilliant read.

  6. JAPAN “Laws enabling #preemptive cybersecurity measures aimed at neutralizing #HostileServers came into force in #Japan on Thursday to address growing cyberattack threats before they cause damage.

The laws, enacted in May last year, allow police and the Self-Defense Forces to access such #servers to prevent #attacks, which are becoming more sophisticated and faster than ever, to protect critical #infrastructure.

Operators of #KeyInfrastructure, including power plants and railways, will be obliged to report #CyberBreaches to the government.

A public-private cybersecurity consultative body was also launched for closer coordination in sharing threat information and devising response measures.

"The addition of neutralization measures will allow us to respond practically to #cyberattacks targeting our country," Prime Minister #SanaeTakaichi said in a social media post on Wednesday.”
