    A cryptocurrency doesn't actually need a network of computers, or even an electronic, electromechanical, or mechanical computer.

    All you really need is something to do math. Traditional "computers", meaning humans, could do it with nothing but paper and pencil if necessary. It would be slow, but assuming you used hash/key sizes and algorithms sized to the "technology" you were using, it would be doable.

    A room full of experienced abacus users might actually have a decent "hash rate" with properly chosen technical parameters ...

    Except ... when this claim (not about the satellites re-entering, just the amount of damage they cause to the atmosphere) started circulating some months back, I read an article (somewhere...) that analyzed the amount and type of matter it would distribute, and it pales in comparison to the amount the earth receives in "space dust" and micrometeroids every day.

    Best figure I know of for the mass of "normal" space matter hitting our planet is 5,200 tonnes / year:

    The current Starlink satellites are "gen2 mini", and are 740 kg. So you would need to de-orbit more than 7,000 of them every year - not 4 per day - to even match the natural space dust falling on earth. Except it's even worse (for the argument) than that, because 740kg is their launch mass, including all their maneuvering fuel/gasses, which by definition are gone before the satellites are deorbited. I don't have an exact figure for how much mass the fuel accounts for, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was more than 25% of the mass of the spacecraft at launch.

    The residue left in the atmosphere doesn't seem to be a very big deal.

    Wem ging Mathe nicht schonmal auf den Geist? Diese Frage kam mir beim Durchsehen der gut 250 ausrangierten Taschenrechner aus dem Friedrich-List-Gymnasium in Reutlingen in den Sinn. Die Rechner gehen zwar nicht mehr, dafür geht heutzutage jedoch die Begeisterung um Computer, statistische Berechnungen und Mathematik weiter denn je.

    Der Titel "On Computable Numbers (Unzurechnungsfähig)" geht zurück auf die einflussreiche Publikation des Mathematikers Alan Turing aus dem Jahre 1936, in der er eine universelle Maschine porträtiert und damit eine mathematische Beschreibung dessen liefert, was heute die Grundlage des Computers bildet. Darüber hinaus gab Turing der bis heute unter dem Etikett der "Künstlichen Intelligenz" anhaltenden Idee Vorschub, Zahlen und andere mathematische Formalisierungen – Produkte des menschlichen Hirns – an die Wirklichkeit anzulegen, durch sie hindurch wahrzunehmen und nach ihrem Bilde zu gestalten.

    Daraus ergibt sich ein Bild des Rechners oder Computers als eine dem Menschen auf den Geist rückende Maschine. In einer totalitären Form, welche Wirklichkeit als berechenbare Information begreift, wird das Morgen als eine statistische Verlängerung von gestern gezeichnet. Hier und heute werden diesem Paradigma, zur Entgeisterung der Anhänger dieses Mathematikwahns, Taschenrechner in ihrer Unzurechnungsfähigkeit gegenübergestellt.
