9. #BOM right now is an ugly example of retrogressive Australian Government policies on #science and applied science.
Both major parties seem quite happy to fund private consulting companies to do public work but with inadequate oversight or accountability.
And the fact that Accenture has been given more work after their website fiasco indicates corruption in high places

#helloSunshine

Thank you everyone for tolerating my coding whinging over the past few months. To reward your patience, I present this humble offering.

If you genuinely like using this, I'd appreciate a 5★ on the App Store too.

Weather data costs money, so Sunshine does too. It's about 1/2 a coffee in Darling Harbour per month, or 2 pints of beer in Melbourne's inner north per year.

11. <rant class="livid">

What a disaster the BOM website continues to be.

Simple things like daily weather observations, easily accessed on the old functional site. Resorting to use search for basic data demonstrates a lazily designed website. Laziness is one of Accenture's core competencies.

Finally searched for Redcliffe. The data is not available for months. September 2025 has the latest sensible data. October 2025 data and later is b0rken

bom.gov.au/climate/dwo/202510/

It is easy to declare an "efficiency dividend" if you never maintain and develop anything 😖 Degrade the service then flog it off. :guillotinedrop:

What is even worse, using the same search string but substituting "Redcliffe" with "Brisbane" gives no result at all, for a set of data that should be intact.

Did BOM overpay Accenture for a useless website so they can monetise OUR DATA by flogging it off to the myriad of "Weather" apps? Those apps belong in the same bin as Private Health Insurance, Accenture, and Private Schools.

Successive Federal governments over the twenty first century have underfunded our precious public institutions and infrastructure, all so a class of citizens can infested with gas guzzling status symbols and another class can more effciently siphon off OUR wealth.

12. The #BOM says both #Adelaide & #Melbourne are anticipating “sweltering conditions” peaking at 42C on #Wednesday, with temperatures reaching as high as 44C in #Elizabeth, in Adelaide’s north.

The hottest part of the day was expected early afternoon – around 2 or 3pm – with temperatures remaining close to their maximum into the evening.

#MurrayBridge, in SA’s Murraylands region, is headed for 46C on Wednesday. #PortAugusta could reach 45C, followed by 47C on Thursday. #auspol #weather

14. There's a lot of hate for the new #BOM page, but having used the beta version for ages I'm not feeling it personally. One gripe I do have is that the price tag didn't include a dark mode setting. Really?
Since I use the #DarkReader extension for #Librewolf it's not a huge issue, except that the page has background mages that make it unreadable in dark mode. So it looks like the before picture. So I got out the screwdriver, took the back off and jiggled some wires. So if anyone wants a #userScript that fixes bom.gov.au for Darkreader it's at codeberg.org/stib/userscripts/
#IMadeAThing #HackTheWeb

15. Hey #webdev thing-knowers, I'm writing a userscript for the bom.gov.au site that removes the background image on part of the page, because it doesn't play well with Darkreader. The image is set with an inline style tag: `<div style="background-image: url("/themes/custom/bom_theme/bom-react/dist/weather-moods/showers-day.webp"), ...`
I'm just brute-forcing the style to nothing, using this script:
```(function() {
'use strict';
let mood = document.getElementsByClassName("weather-mood")[0];
mood.style = "";
})();```
It works at first, but then the page seems to do some post loading thing, and the style gets reverted. The userscript is set to run once the page is idle using `//@run-at = document-idle`.
Is there a way to override the style once the page refreshes itself?
16. Anyone know where the hourly UV index charts have been put by BOM?
That’s why my produce store loves me. Every time #BOM says we’re going to get rain - nothing.
In winter though, it normally greens up beautifully. Hoping this year will be the same.
Until then, lots of lucerne & lupins daily.
29. I just discovered that the Bureau of Meteorology are "improving some of the climate website services".
Sounds good. Tell me more!
"The Bureau will no longer:
- issue fortnightly Climate Driver Update details
- publish Climate Model Summary charts and data
- issue El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) Outlook Watch and Alert statements including the ENSO dial.
"
Um. OK. This must be some new meaning of the word "improvement" of which I wasn't previously aware.
33. If you publish a library with more than one artifact, do create #BOM files. It's easy and so much nicer downstream.
Going through a couple of our projects (Cypher-DSL, JDBC Driver and later Neo4j-Migrations), worth the little effort. If you're a #Maven user like me, it's really easy adding a BOM module to the parent project, #Flatten plugin will take care of most of the work.
* Selectable output format, #utf8, #utf16 or #utf16le, with or without #BOM
Still a few things to add, e.g. use #termcap/#terminfo or Windows Console API for "color output" when applicable ... we will see 😎
37. #TIL: yes of course in Linux you can create a file name that starts with a Unicode BOM (Byte Order Mark). E.g. like this:
$ python3 -c 'open("test".encode("utf-8-sig"), "w")'
Funnily on my Ubuntu 20.04 system I didn't find a way to show the special character with "ls" (neither -b nor -q nor -Q helped). But in my terminal I could copy-paste the names from "ls" output and use them in other commands.
Anyway... nice:
$ ls -Q
"test" "test"
#UTF8 #Unicode #BOM #blindSpots
