  1. Listening to Why Q needs U by Danny Bates, about the development of each letter of the English alphabet but with lots of wider linguistic and language detail. Highly recommended if you’re into that sort of thing 😊

So, English pronounces L two different ways, tongue right behind the teeth is Clear L, tongue a bit further back on the roof of the mouth is Dark L.

Clear L tends to be for L followed by a vowel, Dark L tends to be for L after a vowel. If you pay attention when you say “loll” you might notice the difference — depending where you’re from…

Danny: northerners [in England] tend to use Dark L for both sounds.

Me saying a bunch of words starting with L consciously using the Dark L: doesn’t sound any different.

    Danny: so do Australians.

    WELL OK THEN.

  17. “Staff were told on Thursday that 102 full-time equivalent positions would be cut from the unit, with a large number to come from climate modelling teams.”

“Leading #ClimateScientist Professor #SarahPerkinsKirkpatrick, president of the #Australian #Meteorological and #Oceanographic Society, described the cuts as “one of the worst things I’ve seen during my career”.

“If we don’t have the Australian climate model, then we simply cannot replicate Australia’s climate and #weather within an accurate envelope; it’s just not possible,” she told this masthead.

“None of the other climate models that exist across the world can do that.”

Cuts to strategic CSIRO climate modelling suggests the Learned leader listens to the Economic sooth-sayers in suits than science based facts.

More than 900 affected positions were involved in #SoftwareResearch and development, a spokesperson said. Most of Atlassian’s #employees work in #SoftwareEngineering and #design, accounting for over 50% of its 13,813 full-time workforce in June 2025.

About 640 affected employees are in #NorthAmerica, 480 in #Australia and 250 in #india with the remainder spread across #Japan, the #Philippines, #Europe, the #MiddleEast and #Africa, according to the spokesperson.”

#WiseTech Global will cut about 2000 staff – nearly one-third of its workforce of 7000 – over the next two years as chief executive #ZubinAppoo bets the logistics software giant’s future on #ArtificialIntelligence.” … “‘We’re not halving the capacity,’ Appoo said. “We’re halving the #HumanCapacity, but we’re significantly increasing the overall capacity through agentic AI.

Guardian Australia has been told the shadow immigration minister under Ley, #PaulScarr, had not proposed the country ban and raised significant concerns over it. It’s understood that specific proposal was not taken to shadow cabinet before the leadership coup, and the new opposition leader, #AngusTaylor, had not seen the plan.

The #Liberals’ proposal would also seek to remove as many as 100,000 asylum seekers and international students from Australia more quickly. Visa holders could have their rights to appeal immigration decisions #restricted, and be #blocked from consideration to move on to other #visas.”

  21. The #Aussie giving War & Peace a 'bogan' remake

"Just then, Prince Andrei rocked up to Anna's joint. He was the pregnant sheila's hubby. Like his missus, he was pretty good looking himself."

Those lines are straight from a new translation of Leo #Tolstoy's epic novel #WarandPeace, set in the world of Russian high society in the early 19th century.

Except this is a "bogan" version translated by #AnderLouis, the pen name of a Melbourne IT worker who moonlights as a writer.

He's poured a metaphorical can of Australian beer over the novel by converting Tolstoy's prose into a lingo that wouldn't sound out of place in the popular Aussie sitcom Kath & Kim.

  27. To complete the Thorsborne trail you have to ignore a crocodile warning while crossing a wide, waist deep river. Second picture shows my wife finishing off the biggest crossing. All good fun 😅#crocodiles #straya #FNQ

  28. Just back from a bucket-list hike along the Thorsborne trail, Hinchinbrook Island in far north Queensland. A moderately challenging 4 days - the main challenges being rock hopping and a few river crossings. Absolutely spectacular and with brilliant waterfall-fed swimming holes along the way. 10/10 would recommend. Saw no crocodiles. Which was a good thing given the river crossings. #hiking #bushwalking #straya #FNQ
