  1. November 1st, 2026. It has been one week since the event. Dread keeps me up at night, which I know excaberates the problem, but no matter how much my conscious mind tries to convince my subconscious that it would be better to sleep, despite everything, it fails miserably, and so I lie awake until my body capitulates.

My dreams anticipate reality. In them I am chased relentlessly. Dark shadows lurk in darker shadows, a world without light or mercy, dead silent but for the yowls of my hunters. Clawed darkness crawls towards me, reaching for me.

I awake bathed in sweat, and without thinking, my hand reaches for the clock. 5:13 I read before cursing myself. I should have stayed still; I should have gone back to sleep, to the imagined torture, but instead I moved, and when I move, they come.

I try to close my eyes again, try to pretend, but it is too late. With my eyes closed, I feel the weight crawling over the sheets, then pressing down on my chest, making it difficult to breathe.

A paw boops my nose. Calm at first, then more and more insistent, and when I give up, at 5:21, I curse William Willett and go to the kitchen to fill the bowls.

  2. I have never read a poem of my favorite poet. Wisława Szymborska (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wis%C5%8) wrote in Polish, a language I cannot read. But there are excellent translations of her work into German (Karl Dedecius) and English (Clare Cavanagh and Stanisław Barańczak). They are excellent in the sense of the translated poems being excellent. I am neither able to judge the quality of the Polish originals, nor the accuracy of the translation but I have to trust the reputation of Szymborska and the ability of the translators.

If AI can generate poetry that is ranked higher by humans than the products of human poets (theguardian.com/books/2024/nov), maybe AI it is also better at translating? I have made a small test to get an idea. I took the last stanza of a famous poem ("Some People Like Poetry") by Szymborska, ran it through a widely used current LLM, and compared the outcome to a human translation. My test is of course inadequate to answer the above question, I should have done a blinded study with more poems, more poets, more readers.

    The original:

    "Poezję –
    tylko co to takiego poezja.
    Niejedna chwiejna odpowiedź
    na to pytanie już padła.
A ja nie wiem i nie wiem i trzymam się tego
    jak zbawiennej poręczy."

    From szymborska.org.pl/szymborska/w

In the next post of this thread I show you the two translations, the human one and the one by the LLM.

  9. Some transport simulation experimentation this rainy Sunday.

A strategy to improve walking efficiency is to reduce traffic signal cycle times to provide pedestrians with more opportunities to cross a road each hour. This is often opposed by the transport engineering profession as longer cycle times are seen to provide a higher throughput for motor vehicle traffic.

I’ve held the hypothesis that shorter cycles may actually be beneficial for motor traffic on inner-city-style roads that don’t have turning lanes. The idea being that turning vehicles would have more opportunities to clear the intersection (on the yellow light) if the cycle time was shorter.

Using SUMO (free and open source software), I put the hypothesis to the test.

For an intersection with very even demand, a 120-second cycle performed best for motor vehicles (this is the typical maximum cycle time used in Victoria, except for special cases). However, when the cycle time is reduced, the bare minimum of a 44-second cycle performed better than 100, 80, and 60-second cycles.

This suggests that to balance walking and motor vehicle outcomes, somewhere in the middle may not be the best option!

Even so, all the tested options were rather close, and a 44-second cycle was only an additional 99 seconds of delay for motor traffic across the hour compared with a 120-second cycle.

Caveats: The simulation used even traffic demands from all directions. This is unlikely to reflect reality. Also, I didn’t interrogate the simulation closely for this simple test. There may be quirks included that could change the outcome if discovered and removed.

There is so much in our shared history that is not taught or well known. No doubt because or racism and privilege. The Chinese-Australian history shows us Colonial Australia for what it was warts and all, including murderous events. I don’t know what young kids in primary school are taught these days, but in my day all we were taught was British history. I hope it has changed for the better and that the story of our First Nations and all of our Immigrant communities is revealed to them so they can understand that *racism* is just so wrong for so many reasons.

  18. You should budget a couple hundred dollars / year for tuning & maintenance.

Acoustic pianos, even mediocre ones, have a life and a joy in them that even very high-end electric keyboards cannot match. You’re much more likely to be drawn to play an acoustic!

And no, “but it has weighted keys!” does not change this equation. It’s more than key weight; it’s about the incredible organic complexity of the internals of these instruments. An electric can •sound• a lot better than all but the fanciest and best-maintained acoustics, but the acoustics will so often still •feel• better. And feel beats sound.

    BUT…

Getting an acoustic piano is more like adopting a pet than buying an appliance, so set expectations accordingly!

  19. Consult _The Piano Book_ by Larry Fine, often available at libraries. Doesn’t need to be the latest edition; the “piano blue book” part at the end goes out of date, but the general advice about selecting and owning a piano is timeless.

Consult it •before• you go shopping, and also before you think about exactly where you’re going to place a piano in your home.

It’s a good old-fashioned paper book, and IMO it’s still better and more comprehensive advice than anything you’ll find online. The rest of this thread is just frosting; that book is what you really need to consult.

  20. Saying “never bet against Elon” does not actually make you look smart

The world’s richest man has been more of a main character in the news cycle than usual over the past 10 days, which is saying a lot. We had Elon Musk’s showoff of a “flying car” version of the future Tesla Roadster (“jumping car” more accurately describes this exercise in cold-gas vaporware), more announcements of steps to turn Starlink Mobile into a full-fledged network (never mind SpaceX’s severe shortfall of terrestrial spectrum) and Musk hyping a Tesla-SpaceX merger (SpaceX shareholders might want to hold their applause).

Whatever Musk says, you can expect one reaction from many people who should know better: Never bet against Elon.

That saying seems to come from Musk’s former business partner Peter Thiel, but it’s become a bit of a mantra–especially on X, where Musk has drawn a weird Greek chorus of sycophantic superfans who either don’t mind or outright cheer his racist rants about immigrants.

I understand how that phrase can be easy to invoke from the legit accomplishments of SpaceX and Tesla. I’ve experienced them firsthand–watching one Falcon 9 and two Falcon Heavy launches at Cape Canaveral, then doing a nearly-1,700-mile road trip in a Model 3 in 2022–and I’ve written my share of appreciative things about both companies, SpaceX especially.

But as a catchall rationalization of everything Elon says he’ll make happen, “never bet against Elon” amounts to weak-minded foolishness. Of course you can bet against the guy–and in three obvious cases, your wager could have paid off well.

Cybertruck: Tesla’s metal trapezoid of a truck may seem ubiquitous because of how easy it is to spot one of these things from a quarter-mile away, but in reality it’s sold worse than Ford’s Edsel.

Tesla’s slumping sales could use a boost right now. But instead of shipping a lower-cost EV that might help Tesla compete with the affordable electric cars from BYD and other Chinese automakers that are now racking up sales outside the U.S., the company introduced this $74,990-and-up monstrosity that isn’t street-legal in Europe.

I imagine that the reaction to that poor choice–and to the not-really-flying Roadster and to the still-vaporware Optimus robot that for some reason graces Tesla’s Georgetown showroom in D.C.–among China’s EV industry remains whatever “LOL” is in Mandarin.

Hyperloop: Musk’s notion of vehicles whooshing through low-pressure tubes at hundreds of miles an hour deserved skepticism when he revealed it in 2013 as a supposedly superior alternative to building high-speed rail in California (not that there isn’t much to critique about CAHSR’s management and design failures).

Musk not committing his own money and his own Boring Company operation to build hyperloop networks should have been a tell. Instead, startups lined up investors to build versions of this design in places like Abu Dhabi, then failed to pour concrete because the design proved unworkable.

Much closer to Washington, former Maryland governor Larry Hogan (R.) fell for this nonsense in 2017 and then watched the concept of a D.C.-NYC hyperloop unravel over the next few years. Elsewhere around the world–notably China–high-speed rail has kept rolling.

Political donations: Yes, Musk spending more than a quarter of a billion dollars to help Donald Trump get elected in 2024 may have helped in swing states. But what happened months later when Musk spent another $20 million in just one of those states, Wisconsin?

Dropping that much money there–plus briefly touting an illegal $1 million sweepstakes for voters–did not swing an April 2025 election for a spot on the state Supreme Court. Despite Musk declaring that “Western civilization” was somehow at stake should Brad Schimel (R.) lose, the people of Wisconsin voted for the judge’s Democratic opponent, Susan Crawford, by an almost 10-point margin.

One possibly relevant factor: Musk’s approval ratings in polls are now almost as bad as Trump’s, and Musk can’t claim anything like Trump’s cult of personality.

The appropriate response to any version of “never bet against Elon” is “citation needed.” Musk has done some extraordinary things but now seems extraordinarily detached from the societal circumstances that result in most people proffering dumb ideas having their peers tell them “that’s a dumb idea.”

Too many media-industry folks, meanwhile, need to stop bringing a “never bet against Elon” mindset to covering Musk’s predictions or pledges in what my fellow tech scribe Karl Bode mocks as “CEO Said a Thing” stories. Journalists do their readers a disservice when they fail to remind them of Musk’s spotty record of delivering on his promises–and freelance journalists do their own incomes a disservice by passing on such an easy way to pad out their word counts.

  22. Dishwasher detergent pods are worse than every alternative in every conceivable way. For the price Dollarama is charging for a pack of 11 pods ($3.75), I could buy 63% of a 1.8kg ($5.99) box of powder. Let's do the math... At $3.75 for 11 pods, that's 34c per 11g pod, which in this case just contains powder anyway (and a little orb of Jet Dry). Meanwhile at $5.99 for 1.8kg of No Frill's powder, you get 1800g total, at a value of 30c/100g.

Sure, a box of 50 or whatever pods is probably a better value per pod than 34c—you know what, let's find out...

The exact same pods (Finish Powerball Classic) also come in a bag of 105, which at the current sale price of $22 (reg. $24.99) makes each 11g pod... 21 cents.

So I can pay $5.99 for 1.8kg of powder, or $22 for 1.75kg of pre-portioned powder, negating my dishwasher's pre-wash cycle almost entirely?

And people just accepted this as the state of the art in detergent technology the moment they hit the shelves? It's fucking bananas.

  28. RTSH reminded me of Top of the Pops circa 1992: fussy direction, dark lighting, and the vocal too far down in the mix.

Guess GPB’s big prop - a boat - took forever to get on stage. Effective.

Any of these songs would be an acceptable winner. Many would be significantly better.

  29. AMN Reviews: Murder Corporation – Macabre Visions (2026; Eighth Tower Records)

Moreno Daldosso debuted Murder Corporation in 1992 and released early tapes in 1993 featuring noise, field recordings, and shortwave radio signals combined with distorted vocals. Macabre Visions is a slower and more intentionally haunting release, better thought of as death ambient rather than the post-industrial noise of Daldosso’s 1990s works.

In a sense, the title says it all. The album begins, continues, and ends with a variety of synth textures, drones, manipulated sounds, and (possibly) field recordings. Each track can be taken as a standalone statement, whether focused on suffocating drones accompanied by heartbeats or shimmering soundscapes with metallic scraping. But put together, these pieces tell a story, and it is a harrowing one.

As an example, Macabre serves as a de facto title track, and begins with murky pulsing sounds. Wordless and disturbing vocalizations add to these strangely cosmic tones. Then a sound wall arises unexpectedly, with synths combined with torture noises, static, and effects. Moans Underground is straight up horror, with twisted screams and chromatic sweeps.

Macabre Visions is a disquieting, yet cinematic and strangely beautiful offering. It is one of a pair of new releases from Murder Corporation, the other being a reissue of 1995’s Disturbance. Both will be available on October 28, 2026 from Eighth Tower Records.

  30. I have absolutely no idea how AMPTV did all that: dance routine, steps, cuddly ghosts, and a massive prop from nowhere. But if they’re in Yerevan next year, it’ll be no shock.

Home team PBS send a lovely retro song in waltz time.

RAI’s verbose emo canter channels the spirit of Avril Lavigne: he was a punk, she did ballet.

UA:PBC have green hairy monsters that look like (whisper it softly) bogies.

I’d like to say something nice about TG4’s entry, but it’s written by the same folk as “Laika party”, and shows zero growth. The performers deserve better.
