#Introduction 👋 Hello World!
I’m a proud #dogMom that loves to overshare photos of my #rescue #dog (Cassie).
Bringing #diversityEquitiyInclusion to #tech motivates me.
Professionally, I’ve had a long career in #softwareEngineering, but am now on a journey in the world of #siteReliability #engineering.
Sometimes I’ll also post things about #food, #coffee, #whiskey / #whisky, #wine, #travel, #nba #basketball, and #snowboarding.

RE: https://nerdculture.de/@rattlesnakestu/106283231492865647
I introduced myself to the #fediverse 5 years ago today.
A lot has happened in the past 5 years, for me personally and in the world. I now live in the opposite corner of the continental US, and I work for a different employer - and from home instead of at a warehouse. I've also published more novels since then.
Allow me to re-introduce myself, as I am now in 2026, by way of a hash of hashtags:
I'm a #writer #photographer and #developer interested in #writing #reading #3dprinting #3dmodeling #bbs #retrotech #retrocomputing #php #codeigniter #indie #publishing #tabletopgaming #hiking #kayaking and so much more.

Hi, I'm Andrew
I work as a developer for an Australian based remote team on a product in the events industry. I live in #sydney. Writing mostly #php, #javascript and #typescript. Working with #laravel, #vue, #angularjs, #laravelvapor amongst other stuff.
I've had an account on mastadon.social since 2018 apparently although I only started using it these last couple of days. After a few days on that server I've moved over here to hang out with the #php crew, and so far this seems great.

A 30 minute demo of the Apple Vision Pro in the store is the perfect amuse-bouche to whet the appetite. It’s the greatest hits of oooos and ahhhhs that leaves you wanting more — enough to make bad decisions with a credit card.
But once you get home and dig deep, it becomes apparent that this is an amazing product with limited use cases.
THE GOOD
Yes, it is absolutely wonderful for photos and videos — particularly panoramas and immersive movies. The speakers are fantastically nice without covering your ears. You can get to inbox zero in a whole new way! (Actually kind of fun.) The operating system is gorgeous and I’d like this design language to flow back to desktop!
THE MEH
Safari has a wonky viewport and renders webpages at a large scale. It’s not terribly comfortable after extended use. Window management is annoying and states aren’t currently persistent between sessions. Gestures are wanting — too much pinching and dragging when I’d rather point and flick…
The last worst thing? It’s impossible to share this thing with others — worse than an iPad without multiple user accounts. A guest can only access after your retina unlocks it. My first Oculus Quest was built for sharing, which I did, A LOT.
Aside from looking at photos and videos, I can’t think of a darn thing else to do with this thing as it stands.
I’m certainly not surprising friends with video calls again soon, though it inspired lots of chuckles. Also? My eyes are up here!
Don’t get me wrong, it’ll get oodles better with refinement and more software. On that note, maybe you’ll run a bunch of apps through Safari in the meantime? Good luck! You get one Safari window with tabs, not multiple instances. Apparently this is possible but I couldn’t figure it out!
Again, I realize this is 1.0 — but I don’t think having Slack in a separate window is going to get me excited for the possibilities.
I tried tried pairing it with a computer and keyboard to see what that’s all about and it never worked after many restarts and work-arounds. I think I know where I’d land with that anyway… My greatest productivity hack is having a single monitor and keeping my desktop(s) clean (IRL and virtual).
I have the deadline to return this thing noted on the calendar. I’m leaning bye for now and yay for the possibilities.
If I was a developer I might keep it, but for me? I’d rather save money, watch movies on a television and have a rig that plays Beat Saber with controllers.
Here’s what I REALLY want out of spatial computing and I can’t believe I’m saying this… I want a dongle. Give me a little thing to track eyes, hands and voice to let me swipe, gesture and blather about what I want to happen on a screen at my desk or couch.
Heck, maybe what I really want is gestural computing.
Anyway the Apple Vision Pro is really neat, and I don’t need one right now. I’ll totally loop back on this one.
Speaking of loops, if Apple ever made a jumper/sweater/hoodie/coat with the magic of that solo knit band, I’d preorder it pronto — it felt so good.
—
UPDATE 4/15: I returned the Vision Pro without hassle. This is the first Apple device I think I’ve ever taken back. I felt super bad about it but then made a mental calculation of the many products bought and kept. Apple will be fine.

Let Me Introduce Myself
Hello to everyone reading this! Since we have decided to start over with the AllThingsTech blog, I felt it was only appropriate if I made a little introduction post. Just a few words to let all of you know a little bit about who I am and what I do. So what do you say, shall we get started?
As many of you likely know, but for those that don’t, I’m one of the co-admins of the AllThingsTech.social Mastodon instance along with Kyle Reddoch. AllThingsTech has been around for almost a year now. However, this post isn’t about our instance, it’s to give you some insight into who I am.
I guess I could start with the basics. I’m a 52 year old husband to an amazing wife living in Winston Salem, NC and am the proud parent of two awesome cats named Bess(15 years old) and Kumquat(4 years old). I was born in Merritt Island, FL, right across from the NASA launch pads, but only lived there until I was about 2 – 3 years old. My parents moved to Houston, TX for the oil boom that was just getting started and to be in a much larger city than Cocoa Beach, FL which is where we were living.
I spent all of my childhood and teenage years in Houston. I graduated high school at Klein Oak High School, the same school that Jim Parsons from Big Bang Theory attended. He and I even attended school together for 2 years, as I graduated in 1989 and he graduated in 1991. Small world, wouldn’t you say?
After high school, I went on to do adult things and never attended college. I was sick and tired of school by the time I finished high school and wanted to move on in life. Shortly after graduation, myself and my parents would move back to Florida, this time in south Florida around Boynton Beach.
My parents would end up getting divorced shortly afterwards and my dad and I would end up moving back to Houston in 1991/1992 as we felt that’s where “home” was. Plus, he was approached by his former boss at McCauley Lumber Co in Tomball, TX to come back to work. A deal that we couldn’t pass up.
We would stay in Houston and the surrounding areas until September 2007, which Pops and I would then move to Rome, GA. A place I didn’t really want to be, but it’s where life took us. I ended up meeting what is now my wife in 2013 and we’d get married in 2018.
In January 2022, the wife and I would move to Winston Salem, NC which is where I am located at now. Absolutely enjoying this place as it feels like this is where I belong.
Let’s go back to the year 2015, back when Google+ was one of the big social media platforms of the time. I stumbled across a post by Derek Ross, who I had followed for years, that he had shared by Kevin Barry, the developer of Nova Launcher. Kevin was looking to hire someone to replace his current customer support person who was moving on to other things.
I felt I didn’t have much of a shot at this job, but I decided to send an email Kevin’s way. As they say, you can hit your shot if you never shoot. Almost immediately, to my surprise, Kevin replied to me and wanted to setup a Google Hangouts meeting between us.
Two days later we had a meeting and Kevin ended up hiring me on the spot. Little did I know how much my life would change because of this.
So what is Nova Launcher you ask? It’s the largest and most popular home screen replacement app in the Google Play Store and has been pretty much since the day it was launched publicly on December 13th, 2011. Twelve plus years later, it’s still the most popular launcher in the Play Store.
Now you’re asking, what do I do for Nova Launcher? I am the customer support manager who handles all customer support via email and I also own and run the official, verified Discord server that currently has almost 77,000 members at the time of this writing.
I do other things as well since Nova Launcher was acquired by Branch Metrics back in 2022, but my job is mostly as I stated above. I’m still the only person who answers emails as well as a bit of social media stuff, mostly on Mastodon where we have a Nova Launcher account.
Outside of the work stuff, I’m an avid lover and fan of technology of any and all sorts. Since I work for an Android app, I obviously have a love for Android mobile devices, but I also use Apple’s iOS very regularly as well. I love to play video games and just love to absorb news and information about anything tech related. If it beeps or it goes boop, then my curiosity is piqued.
I’m also one who loves music. Since I work from home, I’m at my PC 12+ hours per day and while I’m at the PC, there is almost always music playing from my speakers. It’s simply a part of life and who I am.
While I’m certainly no professional, I love to take random photos. I take a lot of photos of my cats but also love to try and capture a great sunrise or sunset if and when I can. But you’ll find I snap pictures of all sorts of stuff, even the food the wife and I experience here around Winston Salem.
I’m sure there are many other things I could talk about, but as this post is getting a bit longer than expected, I should wrap it up here. With that said, if you are interested in knowing more about me, you can always reach out to me via Mastodon where I spend a lot of my time during the day posting random stuff of all kinds. My Mastodon account is here: Cliff Wade. I’d love to answer any questions you might have or go into more details about anything I mentioned here.

@TheADHDHobbyist I've never heard of #BlueGriffon but I'm using #VSCode - but I'm not a real web developer; just getting my feet wet. 😀

As part of my move to kolektiva.social I cancelled my monthly #Patreon donation to mastodon.green.
Now I'm a product owner and web developer by trade: I know how to operate a web interaction. Still, it took me multiple minutes to even find out how to cancel. All the visible actionable buttons led to upgrades, i.e: paying more. Sometimes deceptively so.
In the end, I found a tiny pencil icon. Behind which the cancellation option was hidden.
A company that uses #darkdesignpatterns like that, instantly loses all credibility for me. I used to think about Patreon in a mildly positive way, as something an #opensource dev might use to fund their work. Based on actually using their service once, I now see them as tricky greedy rats.
If you engage in arm-twisting and manipulating your users, that tells me two things. One, you don't believe in your own product. Apparently its benefits are not strong enough to retain users. If you don't believe in your product, why would I? Two, you're evil.
If you're a product owner or designer: one little "#design optimization to reduce churn" is all it takes, to destroy your brand credibility.

Unbelievably, today marks 11 months of unemployment for me. I desperately need a job. 😭
I’m a full-stack web developer though my strength is in back-end development. I’m most experienced with JavaScript/TypeScript but I am always eager to learn new things.
I also have a strong customer service background and willing to apply my skills in support engineer roles.
I’m seeking remote jobs in the US (or anywhere else willing to hire in the US).

@raphael That is great to know :)
The code is released under the GPL license so you're free to reuse (parts of) it as long as whatever you distribute is also under the GPL license. With that said, it's in #purescript so I'm not sure how reusable it is, unless your project is also in Purescript.
In any case, if you'd like to join forces for some project, please let me know. It gets demotivating trying to build tools by myself as a developer for a use case that's specific to me as a user. I could do with potential users/fellow developers :)
