  3. @brendan I mean, `#eval` can execute arbitrary I/O, so if you are carelessly testing your functions with it and there is some I/O somewhere in the chain of functions, who knows what can be overwritten.

I once accidentally dumped about 20 GB of noise from /dev/urandom into a temp file because of an #eval. If you have IO functions that do file deletion for cleanup, you better make sure you don't pass those to an #eval by mistake.

Unlike code you are ready to compile and execute, you can always butterfingers an eval parameter!

  4. @brendan `#eval` is also a great way to delete System32 😅

  5. @jonmsterling @chrisamaphone Yeah, in the past I’ve found that just doing `#eval` in the source file is a great way to interactively explore stuff. And unlike a linear repl you can update previous definitions and those changes will flow through.

  6. Terraform Labs founder Do Kwon pleaded guilty to two of nine original criminal charges for conspiracy to commit fraud and wire fraud - three years after the dramatic $60B collapse of the Terra/Luna stablecoin ecosystem. The 33-year-old Korean national said he "knowingly" participated in a scheme that defrauded purchasers.

Kwon faced a maximum sentence of 135 years in prison if convicted on all counts. The plea agreement slashes his maximum sentence to 25 years and Kwon must forfeit as much as $19 million. coindesk.com/policy/2025/08/12 #Fraud #TerraformLabs #DoKwon #Terra #Conspiracy #StableCoin #Crypto #CryptoCurrencies

  8. Focus Focus Focus or Saying No! is a core requirement for being a successful CEO.

OpenAI is tightening the bolts to focus on a new "superapp" in light of Anthropic's strong adoption in B2B markets where they are now capturing over 70% of all spending among companies buying AI tools for the first time.

  9. What exactly are Presidential Executive Orders (EOs)? EOs are in essence a form of "executive prerogative". Note that this phrase is no where to be found in the Constitution. As documented in the Library of Congress, Executive Orders:

    - are "directed to, and govern actions by, Government officials and agencies"

    - have the force of law if the topic of the Executive Order is "founded on the authority of the President derived from the Constitution or statute"

    - are required by law to be published in the Federal Register

EOs cannot replace or contravene laws enacted by Congress, they can only 'fill in the gaps,'" see this piece by Susan Sullivan. gai.georgetown.edu/executive-o

Unlike laws, EOs can be overturned by subsequent presidents. Courts have recognized EOs as having the force of law until superseded by legislation or unless they are clearly in conflict with existing law. EOs have been overturned by the courts in the past. #executiveorder #potus #FedGov #government #laws #congress #USA

  12. Summer ☀️ read: a new paper on model-based clustering just appeared in Computo!

Julien Jacques and Brendan Thomas Murphy publish a new method for clustering multivariate count data. The method combines feature selection and clustering, and is based on conditionally independent Poisson mixture models and Poisson generalized linear models.

On simulations, the Adjusted Rand Index (ARI) of the model with selected variables is close to the optimal ARI obtained with the true clustering variables.

The paper and accompanying R code are available at computo-journal.org/published-

  13. Weekly output: FCC frees Verizon from phone-unlocking rule, Donut Lab’s solid-state battery, Wikipedia turns 25, Google traffic trends

This week brought a lot of unpleasant headlines, but none made me feel uneasy like the news that Washington Post reporter Hannah Natanson was subjected to an unexpected visit by the FBI at her house Wednesday that concluded with investigators confiscating her work and personal laptops, her phone and her smartwatch–all seized, it now seems, on a fraudulent pretext. Since then, the man who spent his equivalent of pocket change to buy the Post in 2013 has said nothing about that in public, yet another way in which Jeff Bezos has shown himself an unworthy successor to Katharine Graham and her son Don Graham.

In addition to what you see below, I wrote a post for Patreon readers sharing bonus bits about what I learned at CES two weeks ago.

1/12/2026, FCC Unties Verizon From 60-Day Phone-Unlocking Rule, PCMag

Two days after the Federal Communications Commission granted Verizon’s wish, Verizon suffered an hours-long outage that people could work around relatively easily if their phones were unlocked to allow them to add a third-party eSIM.

1/15/2026: Wikipedia Is Now 25 Years Old [Citation Not Needed], PCMag

I had made a mental note to myself to write an essay about the free online encyclopedia hitting the quarter-century mark, but then the actual date snuck up on me. Fortunately, the lede and the headline basically wrote themselves.

1/17/2026: Donut Labs’ Solid-State Battery-Powered Motorcycle Turned Heads at CES, But Big Questions Remain, PCMag

Writing this left me feeling over my skis more than usual–I don’t cover battery technology in any great depth, this startup has disclosed almost nothing about the design of its solid-state batteries, and two outside analysts weren’t willing to assess their pitch. But reading up at length on this company and on others working on better EV batteries did make me realize one thing: There’s enough innovation happening here that we don’t need Donut’s invention to work.

1/17/2026: AI Is Still Hammering News Sites, Google Search and Social Referrals Plunge, PCMag

The brutal declines in Google search traffic reported in a study published Monday by the University of Oxford’s Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism caught my eyes and those of my editors, but I also found some news value in this report’s stats about which online platforms and technologies newsroom leaders plan to emphasize or back away from.

  19. X launching long ago promised Financial App? Well Maybe - Sort of...

"‘X Money" rollout coming. Reports suggest people have been testing the service, and X says it will have “competitive perks,” such as 3% cash back on, a savings account offering 6% interest, an X-branded metal debit card emblazoned with the user’s @ handle, and free transfers of funds from peer-to-peer.

BUT - regulation hurdles still remain where a financial app of this sort must be authorized in all 50 states, which has reportedly been slowing things down. gizmodo.com/xs-everything-app- #X #FinancialServices #MoneyApp #XMoneyApp #CashBack #DebitCard #Banking #SavingsAccount #EverythingApp
