Mudi 7 vs NETGEAR M1

Got my Mudi 7 router today. When I was replacing the SIM card, it turned out that the battery in my old NETGEAR M1 had become swollen (after 3 years of use running 100% from the power source).
Crazy that Netgear decided to make their latest 5G router model with an irreplaceable battery.

If I get in the mood for some tech hacking, I am considering putting #OpenWRT on my old unused #Netgear #Orbi units.
When we moved into this house, the cable company installed Plume pods for the mesh wifi. I thought I would wait until they left and put my Orbis in but to my shock, I liked the Plumes.
Because this is a big house, even with three Plume pods there are dead spots. I'm trying to figure out how to get the most bang out of these old Orbis. I have one base station and two satellites. The Plumes are very smart about the ethernet ports. If you plug in an uplink, the pod becomes a repeater. If it has no uplink, the pod becomes a bridge adapter.
The RBW30 satellites have no Ethernet ports so I can't use them as bridges. I wonder if there is some mode they can go in to where they will participate with the Plume mesh. Can OpenWRT even do that? This is a big research topic on which I have a very shaky understanding. Netgear loves telling me how EOL this is so I lose nothing but farting around with them. It just remains to be seen if or how they can be useful.

So on Friday, the FCC quietly extended the foreign router firmware deadline to 2029. Why you may ask? Well the said that enforcing it would create cybersecurity risks.
I mean imagine that, unpatched hardware might be an issue....who knew? 🤷♂️
The new deadline lands 20 days before the next inauguration. Oh and I believe TikTok says hi.

Three companies approved under the FCC router ban. One makes sense. One is already in the government's server cabinets. One is Amazon — and you don't tell Amazon no when they run your classified workloads. Also I pulled the SEC filing. Funny story.

The FCC router ban approval queue is starting to answer questions nobody was willing to ask out loud. Netgear got approved with no explanation. TP-Link's CEO wrote a million dollar check and told investigators about it as a credential. Total coincidence, I'm sure.

Just got this e-mail from Netgear - almost thought it's a phishing e-mail - but they just wanted to let me know that my Nighthawk® X4S AC2600 WiFi Router reached it's "End of Life" after 6 or 7 years and I'm supposed to buy a new Netgear router 🤔 Well, that Netgear router is long gone and I'm glad I've switched to a FRITZ!Box with much better long-term support. I'd hate to throw out a perfectly fine router just because the manufacturer says so.

Netgear Gets Mysterious Exemption To Trump FCC ‘Router Ban,’ Refuses To Say How
-
@cmccullough Yep. #Netgear sent it to an email address used solely to registered a switch in 2016 - which incidentally died out of warranty just 3 years later. So they've held onto that email addy for over a decade just to spam me on special occasions of their choosing. And yes, no prospect of unsubscribing.
Never underestimate the ability of a marketing opportunity to override corporate ethics.
Since this email was ostensibly signed by the Netgear CEO, we know precisely where the ethical failure starts and how little they respect the integrity of the customer contact information we provide.

As we thought, it was never about security!

Yhdysvallat kielsi kaikki ulkomailla valmistetut, kuluttajille tarkoitetut reitittimet maaliskuussa
Nyt ensimmäinen laitevalmistaja, amerikkalainen Netgear, sai poikkeusluvan tuotteidensa myynnille, vaikka senkin tuotteet valmistetaan Yhdysvaltain ulkopuolella.

#Netgear Scores the First Exemption From the #FCC's Foreign-Made Router Ban
https://www.pcmag.com/news/netgear-scores-the-first-exemption-from-the-fccs-foreign-made-router-ban
-
Fortuitous timing… The day after I asked people's opinions about whether I should replace my EOL'd #Netgear router, Netgear sent me #spam bragging about how they've been approved by the FCC. There are no unsubscribe instructions anywhere in the message, which means every single email like this they sent is a separate violation of the #CanSpamAct. Amateur-hour crap like this pretty much guarantees I'll never buy another product from them.
-
I'm sure there's some money involved and probably going to be a bit more surveillance, too.
FCC exempts Netgear from ban on foreign routers, doesn't explain why
-
Netgear Sidesteps Router Ban with FCC Waiver
Netgear has scored a major win with the FCC granting it a temporary waiver, allowing the company to import consumer routers until 2027 despite a broader ban on foreign-made networking hardware. This move marks a significant exception to the rule, with Netgear becoming the first consumer brand to sidestep the import restriction.
-
I got this email this morning, and I guess this is now a marketing point? Whether the FCC labels you a “trusted consumer router”? I wonder what requirements they met, or more likely, how much that cost them.
For context, I don’t use NETGEAR. Just an old account email.
-
