Ey, mein Netgear JGS524Ev2 kotzt mich so an. Die Firmware ist mega buggy.
Durch einen Bug ist es mir gerade passiert, dass ich alle(!) Netzwerkports am Switch deaktiviert habe. Also komplett ausgesperrt. Da half nur noch Factory Reset.Leute, ein guter Rat: Kauft euch niemals Infrastrukturgerät von #Netgear. Die sind der letzte Scheiß. Und den Bug habe ich in allen mir vorliegeneden 4 Firmwareversionen gefunden.
Das ist eine Scheißfirma!Der Switch wird das nächste Gerät sein, das hier aus dem Netz fliegt. Aber aktuell habe ich genug Kohle für meinen Kram ausgegeben

Das Thema mit dem Software Bug in meinem #Switch von #Netgear frisst mich immer noch an. Bei den meisten ist der wahrscheinlich halbwegs unkritisch. Aber wer mit #VLAN hantiert rennt hier voll rein. Und wenn ich mir einen managed Switch hole, dann ist einer der Gründe meist, weil ich mit VLAN arbeiten will. Und wer hier dann IEEE 802.1Q nutzt steckt in der Falle. Port 1 ist quasi nicht umkonfigurierbar, hängt auf PVID 1, welches nicht aktiv sein sollte und bei allen anderen Ports ist die PVID nur mit Workaround zu ändern.
Wenn so ein simpler Fehler im Testing einer Software nicht auffällt, dann waren entweder die Tester unfähig oder Tests wurden vernachlässigt. Bei letzterem handelt es sich dann um sogenannte Bananensoftware; reift beim Kunden. Blöd nur, wenn es das letzte Release vor out of Service war wie bei mir.
Für mich als ehemaliger Software Qualitäter ist sowas nur schwer zu ertragen. Hätte ich das beim Lieferanten gefunden wäre der mit Level 0 und C-Rating nach Hause gegangen -
Im Rahmen der Umstrukturierung meines Netzwerkes hier war ich gestern tatsächlich wieder einmal gezwungen #Windows auf meinem Rechner zu booten. Was mich dazu gezwungen hat ist ein sehr häßlicher Bug in der Konfigurationsoberfläche bei den VLANs nach 802.1Q bei meinem #Switch, einem #Netgear #JGS524Ev2.
Der Bug schlägt zu, wenn man die #PVID eines Ports ändern will. Die Änderung wird nicht angenommen. Workaround: Man sucht sich einen beliebigen Port aus der vor dem liegt, den man ändern möchte. Also z.b. Port 5, wenn ich Port 10 ändern möchte. Den Port 5 nimmt man nun in das #VLAN auf, welches man als PVID für Port 10 einstellen möchte. Dann geht man in den PVID Screen. Dort klickt man Port 5 an, trägt die PVID ein, die in Port 10 soll, klickt dann Port 10 an, trägt dort ebenfalls die PVID ein und klickt dann übernehmen. Resultat: Port 5 ist unverändert und Port 10 hat die gewünschte PVID. Und nun nimmt man Port 5 wieder aus den VLAN heraus.

Got my Mudi 7 router today. When I was replacing the SIM card, it turned out that the battery in my old NETGEAR M1 had become swollen (after 3 years of use running 100% from the power source).
Crazy that Netgear decided to make their latest 5G router model with an irreplaceable battery.

If I get in the mood for some tech hacking, I am considering putting #OpenWRT on my old unused #Netgear #Orbi units.
When we moved into this house, the cable company installed Plume pods for the mesh wifi. I thought I would wait until they left and put my Orbis in but to my shock, I liked the Plumes.
Because this is a big house, even with three Plume pods there are dead spots. I'm trying to figure out how to get the most bang out of these old Orbis. I have one base station and two satellites. The Plumes are very smart about the ethernet ports. If you plug in an uplink, the pod becomes a repeater. If it has no uplink, the pod becomes a bridge adapter.
The RBW30 satellites have no Ethernet ports so I can't use them as bridges. I wonder if there is some mode they can go in to where they will participate with the Plume mesh. Can OpenWRT even do that? This is a big research topic on which I have a very shaky understanding. Netgear loves telling me how EOL this is so I lose nothing but farting around with them. It just remains to be seen if or how they can be useful.

@cmccullough Yep. #Netgear sent it to an email address used solely to registered a switch in 2016 - which incidentally died out of warranty just 3 years later. So they've held onto that email addy for over a decade just to spam me on special occasions of their choosing. And yes, no prospect of unsubscribing.
Never underestimate the ability of a marketing opportunity to override corporate ethics.
Since this email was ostensibly signed by the Netgear CEO, we know precisely where the ethical failure starts and how little they respect the integrity of the customer contact information we provide.

Fortuitous timing… The day after I asked people's opinions about whether I should replace my EOL'd #Netgear router, Netgear sent me #spam bragging about how they've been approved by the FCC. There are no unsubscribe instructions anywhere in the message, which means every single email like this they sent is a separate violation of the #CanSpamAct. Amateur-hour crap like this pretty much guarantees I'll never buy another product from them.

I got this email this morning, and I guess this is now a marketing point? Whether the FCC labels you a “trusted consumer router”? I wonder what requirements they met, or more likely, how much that cost them.

Updated #FreshTomato #firmware on my #Netgear #R7000 #router and #ASUS RT-N66U that I use as a switch + WiFi AP.
For some reason it was a pain to get the WAN working again. Rebooting the cable modem and R7000 eventually cleared it up?
Noticed that #busybox #ntpd on the firmware doesn't respond to ntpq queries and is rather config-limited, so I installed the #entware version on the R7000's USB stick.
Also uninstalled #avahi because it's now built into the firmware - neat! Now do #wsdd2 please!
