PM Carney announces 3 by-elections. https://www.pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-releases/2026/07/26/prime-minister-carney-announces-elections Why these three? Cuz the LPC is gaming the table to sweep all three. I explained this last Sunday: https://davidakin.substack.com/p/david-akins-roundup-by-election-breakdown #cdnpoli #elxn45

@RuthODay2 (Apologies if I've had this discussion with you before...)
The #CPC only lost around 4% of their support (from historic highs) to the Liberals in the #elxn45. The reason the Liberals won was because of the collapse of the vote for the NDP and the Bloc. I don't think it's fair to blame #PierrePoilievre or the #CPC campaign for that.
You can look at the polling from 2023-2026 from https://338canada.com/federal.htm .
-
@ChrisCorrigan As for Mr. Poilievre, 41% of votes is the highest proportion of votes Conservatives have won federally since 1988, so he clearly has some popular appeal. Though the #CPC shed some votes to the Liberals, the key story of #elxn45 was the collapse of the NDP and Bloc votes, driven by Pres. Trump.

Congrats to Elections Canada. They're processing Terrebonne ballots -- with 50+ candidates thanks to long-ballot committee -- at least as fast as the 2 Toronto ridings. #elxn45

Looking at the 2025 #Canadian federal #election: 120 of 343 MPs were elected with less than 50% support. 20 of them received less than 40%.
Of those 20 seats:
1 Green Party
3 Bloc Québécois
4 Liberal
4 NDP
8 ConservativeAs a percentage of the respective party's total seats:
Green 100% 1/1
Bloc Québécois 14% 3/22
Liberal 2% 4/169
NDP 57% 4/7
Conservative 6% 8/144 -

1. I listened to a podcast with David Coletto last week in which he discussed Pierre Poilievre's popularity. He pointed out that, while many Canadians have a strong negative view of Mr. Poilievre, there is a significant number who strongly support him. Let us not forget that the #CPC won 41% of the votes in #elxn45, the highest for the Right since 1984. Why has he had such high support?1/n

Lots of people around here are saying that the #CPC should want to avoid an election this Fall. Let me explain the case for an election as a #Conservative sees it.
https://338canada.com/federal.htm
The Liberals did remarkably well in #elxn45, with high seat numbers in Québec and BC in particular. They did that by offering #MarkCarney as serious and competent, but also as a blank screen upon which voters could project what they wanted to see:

For instance, I just finished listening to the #PaikinPodcast discussion with @justinling.ca . Mr. Ling consistently refers to "America".
A good discussion, by the way: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TmrReXrrBec . It wasn't entirely fair to the #CPC strategy in #elxn45, but it did have some fair criticisms of #MarkCarney.

The #CPC was silent when Longest Ballot Committee went to work in by-elections in Miss-Lakeshore (2022) , Wpg S Centre (2023) Tor St Paul's (2024) LaSalle—Émard—Verdun (2024) - LPC lost the last two - but now that its leader is facing LBC initiative for a 2nd time, all of a suddent CPC is calling for new laws to outlaw LBC initiatives. #cdnpoli #elxn45

By-election is called in Battle River-Crowfoot for Aug 18. CPC is (famously) running the party leader defeated in his Ottawa riding, Pierre Poilievre. LPC not conceding: will run Darcy Spady. Mind you: LPC got 12% of popular vote in #elxn45. Normally gets under 5-8% in general elections. https://liberal.ca/liberal-party-of-canada-announces-darcy-spady-as-liberal-candidate-for-battle-river-crowfoot/ #cdnpoli

Jagmeet Singh deserved a lot better than he got from Canada considering what he endured.
"Singh told reporters in April that police had advised him in the winter of 2023 that his life could be in danger. They did not tell him who was behind the threat but he said the implication was that it was a foreign government.
He said he stayed in his basement, avoided windows and considered quitting politics over fears about his family’s safety. He decided to carry on but was forced to lead the NDP for a period under police protection.”
I hope Carney brings this up with Modi next week, but now with the tragedy of the air crash…

The Honorable MP for Carlton, ON, Bruce Fanjoy rose in Parliament today for the first time.
If you didn't watch 🇨🇦 #Elxn45 this year... Fanjoy beat and took the riding from Poilievre.
"I will never take the honour of representing them [Carlton] for granted... Now it's time to embrace every moment in this House and in all of our ridings to build a future in which all Canadians can thrive -- in True North Strong and Free!"

#CdnPoli Important read 👆🏻👆🏻👆🏻
⚠️ "At a moment when the premier has been accused of stoking separatist sentiment, loosening these requirements represents a concession to radical elements that seek to destabilize Canadian federalism"
🔎 Intro of the bill and controversial reforms during #Elxn45 "would have drawn national attention and hurt Pierre Poilievre's federal Conservatives by reinforcing narratives about Trumpism within the conservative movement."

"Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Transport and Internal Trade"What I see there is:
"Minister of anti-tariff resiliency."I love it. She's tough, and smart.
Together with "Mélanie Joly, Minister of Industry" and "Anita Anand, Minister of Foreign Affairs" …
What a team!

Terrebonne, Quebec riding flipped to the Liberals today. This brings a total of 170 seats, so far, for the Liberals in the House of Commons #Elxn45 (two seats shy of a majority).
A recount was automatically triggered when the Bloc Québécois candidate won by less than 0.1% of the overall vote in April.
Three more recounts coming in May.

So, a good reminder that the vote tally isn't over until the vote tally is over.
The riding of #Terrebonne flips back to the #LPC by one single vote after flipping to the #BQ after flipping to the #LPC after being called for the #BQ.

A note for the #MapleMaga conspiracy theorists out there: the judge presiding over this was Quebec Superior Court Justice Danielle Turcotte, who was appointed to the Bench by Rob Nicholson - then AG / Justice MInister in Stephen Harper's govt.
