  1. Oh hi, it's me.

Just taking a gander at the Willamette theme by @bridgetown …

    …on the new #iPhoneDuo 😲

Lookin' pretty slick if I do say so myself!

    First impressions of the hardware?

    1. Gee, it's kinda small actually.
    2. *picks it up, uses it for 2 min*
    3. Great, now I'm ruined for all other iPhones. 😅

Seriously, I don't know why in 2-3 years time I would buy any other iPhone than the cheaper offspring of this!

  2. Zach Frazier praises Rookie Max Iheanachor: “Max, obviously, has been playing really well, stepping in. I feel like he just picks up everything so quick. If he makes a mistake, you just kinda have to tell him once and he’s got it. He’s not one of those guys that’s going to make the same mistake twice, which is probably the best thing I can say about him.” #Steelers #NFL

  3. The Meteorological Musings Of A Rather Decaying And Incoherent Mind;

    According to looking at the sky and the squirrels, there is a massive amount of moisture getting pulled from the gulf moving North West, and it appears that it is going to mix with a massive cold front coming down from the Northwest going south east, I'd say somewhere within the next 72 hours there is going to be a massive snow storm moving across the Rockies and dropping temperatures across the plains the South the Midwest and all the way into New England with widespread snow and rain throughout the country, don't take my word for it look at the sky and watch the squirrels;

  4. “Anarchism is democracy taken seriously”*…

Further (and to some extent, contra) to yesterday’s post– Martin Gurri on the need to reground Liberal Democracy— the estimable Alan Jacobs, who suggests that we need to get in touch with our “inner anarchist.” In a recent post, he shares a “mini-manifesto”…

I am temperamentally and morally a conservative, which is to say: I believe that I am charged with preserving my inheritance, nurturing it, and passing it along to the next generation. That inheritance is spiritual, cultural, natural, and political. (It may or may not be financial; that matters little.) Our largest social problems stem from the fact that our political economy promotes the concentration of power and money, and the concentration of power and money militates against the preservation of any spiritual, cultural, and natural inheritance. That is how we get an unprecedentedly rich and theoretically free society that also features corrupt religious institutions, insipid art, and dying rivers. I will continue to do my best to conserve and promote my Christian faith, my convictions about art, and my natural environment, but I must do so in unpropitious conditions. We need an alternative political economy that encourages rather than inhibiting the work of conservation, and I think anarchism, properly understood, is that alternative.

Citing his “major guides” to thinking about anarchism– Peter Marshall, Demanding the Impossible: A History of Anarchism; James Scott, Two Cheers for Anarchism; and David Graeber, essays— he notes that, on his old blog he posted often on the subject, and directs us to “this essay [source of the image above] and then this reflection on Christian anarchy” for his fundamental thoughts.

But the meat of the post is the “notebook” of thoughts on anarchism that follow. A few examples:

It is vitally important to distinguish anarchism from libertarianism. The highest goods of the libertarian are freedom of action and freedom to own property, both conceived as belonging to the individual. The anarchist, by contrast, seeks some form of the good life in collaboration and cooperation with others. Anarchism is therefore intrinsically social, pluralistic, and unplanned. Because, as Isaiah Berlin says, the Great Goods are not always compatible with one another, you collaborate with people who share your priorities, understanding and accepting that others will find other structures of collaboration. And in pursuing those goods you have the humility to recognize that you don’t know how they may be achieved; that is something you discover through your collaboration. (Related by me: this and this.)

Anarchism is therefore not a system of government but a practice, and one can practice it at any level of social interaction. The parent who tells two squabbling children to work out their differences themselves, rather than appealing to a parental verdict, is practicing anarchism, and a very important form of it too. (See my comments on machi no hoiku and mimamoru in this post. Anarchist pedagogy!)…

The true anarchist can never throw bombs, because when you do that you are making decisions for other people without their consent, which is anthithetical to anarchism…

Anarchism can never be revolutionary in the sense in which political systems (communism, socialism, fascism) can be revolutionary. But the ultimate effects of anarchism can be far greater than the effects of any of those other movements. As Hannah Arendt said, every revolutionary becomes a conservative the day after the revolution; as The Who said, “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.” Anarchism declines bosses [but importantly, not leaders] altogether. And that is truly revolutionary – but it is only brought about by means so slow and patient that no one can see them at work…

So much more, eminently worth reading in full: “Anarchist Notebook.”

Extra credit opportunity: recognizing that Jacobs’ critique of the status quo is not inconsistent with Gurri’s, how might we take up Gurri’s challenge to reground Democracy in a way that stirs in the “commons” thinking of anarchism?

    * Edward Abbey

As we rebuild better, we might send revolutionary birthday greetings to Nestor Makhno (AKA Bat’ko Makhno); he was born on this date in 1888 (O.S.). He was a Ukrainian anarchist revolutionary and the commander of the Revolutionary Insurgent Army of Ukraine during the Ukrainian War of Independence (a war to regain independence by the Ukrainian People’s Republic against the Bolsheviks, who had annexed Ukraine into the Soviet Union). He established the Makhnovshchina (loosely translated as “Makhno movement”), a mass movement in the Ukrainian peasantry to establish an anarchist system in the country between 1918 and 1921.

Sadly, that struggle for independence continues to this day.

  5. Went with Meg to the Southeastern Animal Fiber Fair (SAFF) yesterday so she could shop the vendors for yarn, buttons, and other goodies. (There is a "button lady" who sells vintage buttons *only* at these events, so Meg keeps a list of wants all year for the opportunity...) That was my big birthday gift to Meg this year: taking her to SAFF and buying her whatever she found there. I'm not a smart man. 😂

I'm not a fiber artist myself, but I have to say I love the vibes at SAFF. She ran into several people she knows from her knit group, and all the folks that we talked to at various booths were super-nice. There were vendors who dealt in all the different stages of fiber-making, showing and selling fleeces, combs, spinning equipment, processed wool for spinning, dyeing equipment and dyes, yarn (of course), and knitting needles, etc. Felting kits, looms, and a bit of everything too.

My only disappointment was that there were still a few vendors hawking Harry Potter-related yarns. One of them had a few interesting things, but I left the booth when I saw those -- can't support that.

Otherwise, though, really nice way to spend an afternoon.

  6. You know how a dog shakes & twists every inch of its body when soaked, & can you imagine how GOOD that must feel, from ear tips to the last inch of tail?

Maybe after 250 years our Republic needs a good drench & shake, scattering detritus that has clung too long — elements like Citizens United, no upward congressional age limits, free-wheeling lobbying, our self-regulating, minuscule & unchallenged SCOTUS, the complex but inordinately unfair tax code, inhumane & just plain stupid immigration policies — and these don’t even include the massive flaws revealed by this incompetent & unethical administration.

The 27th Amendment dates to 1992. I’d say we need a few more, and damned fast.

  7. Scorpio season is always a tricky time for me, probably due to my own Scorpio in rising.

This time, we're also treated to a Mercury retrograde in Scorpio and a Venus retrograde in Scorpio, forcing us to go deep inside, retrieving memories about things that were said and done, but also assess our values when it comes to friendships and relationships.

As a Scorpio Ascendent, I must say I have already shedded a lot of skin in my lifetime, I am honestly a bit done with the constant deep internal changes and I am craving internal and outward stability. I think my Taurus Sun deserves that little peace and quiet in life.

I think we should put more money into education.

  9. I can already say that the script for Shadow Punisher is on the crappier side, and the direction could be better. It's fine by me - I'm dealing with darkness IRL and the _last_ thing I need is things that moves me. I also have a soft spot for "bad" fiction; it's usually more free to throw in stuff that looks OTT, but actually are good ideas. Like the entire cadre of lowlife in the area suddenly wanting to turn themselves in.

  10. 👋🏻 I had to say that one. I'm surprised they liked it. 😁 Gnite!

  11. I checked out the #iPhone Duo today and I have to say it’s impressive engineering. The crease was imperceptible, I ran my finger over it several times and couldn’t tell there was one. You really would have to look for it. It’s very intuitive to use, but as the end of the day, it’s really just another type of iPhone. It’s a nice touch have but not a must have. For those wanting a foldable iPhone #Apple has a solution for you. For me I’ll use my iPhone 17 Pro Max for a very long time.

  12. I had my first “virtual human” reach out to me via email offering to buy my indie side project. I want to say more but I’m worried that some years from now some AI will find this and put me on a list.

  13. Getting into the later parts of "MIO: Memories in Orbit" and I can just say that this game is fantastic?

  14. All #religions aim at that #infinity and they are all good and honorable. I heard God say those very words. I cannot know God but I can experience #God cuz where else could I be? That means every experience is actually in relation to that God until I stop. Then I #merge and it's better. #John14:20

nobody sane defends shitlibs. i defend voting and engaging to move the #democrats left because we can't have 3rd party in our shitty #fptp voting system

the problem is we get voices who *only* complain. this creates a psychological effect: alienation and demotivation

if people criticize then say " #vote" i love them

if people only criticize, and offer no solutions, i am left wondering at their true motivations

we have to speak in solutions not simply complain

  16. Planned to go to a zine fest for queer people of the global majority and I had been planning to go since earlier this year, made a zine to share that I have not shared before but got dragged out to see my brother who is moving abroad because I am a bad guy if I don't suddenly change my plans to go. He spent most of the time cussing me out for being chronically ill, cussed me out for needing to be on a treatment that makes me ill, cussed me out for having to be on a treatment for the rest of my life that increases the probability of cancer and cussed me out because I'm dealing with discrimination at work because I'm chronically ill. I mean he did ask, am I meant to just say that I am magically cured when there is no cure?

I guess I'll just go and die then.

That zine fest is over so I have to wait to see if they bring it back next year.
I'm off to take myself to an art shop to get lost there. I can make some more zones that I won't get to share. That'll surely cheer me up. 🫠

  17. #WritersCoffeeClub 26/10: How did you develop your voice?
I’m wary of the way the question is framed. The word ‘develop’ seems to imply that there’s a nice tidy technique or formula for this. There isn’t.
I’d prefer to say that I *found* my voice, and the key elements in doing this are: lots of reading; lots of writing; listening to your characters—and absolutely no recourse to AI.

  18. Getting feedback, getting bug reports is kind of exciting in the age of AI, and I can't believe I'm gonna say that. I copy and paste the feedback and let it go. Do a little bit of QA, and then I'm good to go. I re-upload the file through my process. It backs up the one that I'm overwriting on the server, and I'm done.

For those interested in such things: this was taken with the Light Lens Lab 50mm ELCAN homage wide open at f/2, mounted on an SL3.

I have to say, there are aspects of this which read to my eye as if this had been shot on film.

  20. The sun seems to go down faster this time of year. These were taken over the course of an hour.

    Tonight is a hunter's moon.

I got to say hello to a duck tolling retriever who had discovered a piece of driftwood that was likely once the base of a tree: about 3 feet at its longest and shaped like a tripod. The dog was singing to it as it danced around, telling the stick who's boss. I told the dog it was an excellent stick.

  21. The group dynamics were interesting... there was (to me) some annoying male presumptiveness going on, unfortunately. I was surprised to see it in that group. But yes, I know I shouldn't have been surprised.

And honestly it may have also been just some men who didn't grok social/group cues, if I want to be generous... but it was a little annoying to have a couple of them do some monopolizing of the time.

It wasn't terrible, but there were absolutely 3 times when I wanted to say "shut up, man". Maybe when I'm not the newest newcomer to this group I would speak up? These people have all known each for 4+years (some for decades). It wasn't egregious but I assume if I noticed it, others did. Dunno.

(I think the group was pretty evenly split gender-presentation-wise, fwiw)

    -sigh-

  22. Went to a fiber festival with Meg this morning/afternoon, and came back to this. It's not unusual for Sir Wobbles (orange) to sit with Cupcake (black & white) or with Sam (tabby) but I don't recall them all piling into a seat together since Sir and Cupcake were kittens.

Perhaps this is an indication they'd like us to turn the heat on, but I can't say that I feel any urgency if this is the result.

  23. Huh, PEP-827 kinda completely flew by me unnoticed but holy crap that's a SWOLE PEP. My index finger got tired of scrolling peps.python.org/pep-0827/

That suggested scope of change is _massive_ as well and as someone who sometimes yearns for TypeScript-y type system in Python I'm torn between liking and hating this, mostly because while immensely powerful TS type system is anything but simple and has amazing footguns. Very elegant footguns I have to say.

  27. I also want to say, as I mentioned the other day, the ravens don’t always want to come near me, so I respect the distance and don’t chase. I’m also not in the habit of feeding them (or any other birds). As someone who cares deeply for birds, I recommend following local ordinances and practices, common sense, and the ethics of interacting safely with wildlife.

  28. I read food researcher Jenny Dorsey say that Singapore’s hawker food culture and prices would not exist if eggs needed to be refrigerated there. If we needed to refrigerate eggs the way rhe US does, storage and operational costs would increase. Eggs play a big role at every meal (not jusf breakfast) and in many local dishes.

This and other info will be in her paper ‘Who pays for heritage? Examining form-function tensions in Singapore’s hawker centre policies’ in the Food Policy journal
