John Tunstall was an English rancher and merchant. He moved to Lincoln to compete with the powerful Murphy & Dolan Mercantile Company. He was assassinated by a sheriff's posse on February 18, 1878, plunging the county into a violent, six-month conflict (the Lincoln County War). The U.S. Cavalry, stationed nearby at Fort Stanton, brought the fighting to an end when they intervened on behalf of Murphy & Dolan.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is a historic, 64-mile narrow-gauge steam railroad running between Chama, New Mexico, and Antonito, Colorado from late May to mid-October.
