He was assassinated by a sheriff's posse on February 18, 1878, plunging the county into a violent, six-month conflict (the Lincoln County War). The U.S. Cavalry, stationed nearby at Fort Stanton, brought the fighting to an end when they intervened on behalf of Murphy & Dolan.
