The prairie dog behind our house was chattering this morning. My wife has named him Stanley. #santafe #newmexico #prairiedog
💁🏻♀️ TIL: #BryceCanyon in #Utah isn’t actually a #canyon – it’s a series of natural amphitheaters holding the world’s largest collection of #hoodoos, rock spires up to 60m tall that began forming 50 million years ago. 🏜️
The #park sits at 2,400m elevation, hosts #endangered species like the Utah #prairiedog and #California #condor, and became an International Dark Sky Park in 2019. 🌌

Looks so yummy!

Standing watch. 🌾 This prairie dog is keeping a careful eye on the surroundings from its golden lookout. There is something so charming about their alert, upright posture in the vast landscape. Such an iconic part of the plains! ✨

One last photo for #nationalpetday of my first Black-Tailed #prairiedog Binks. He loved to bite, but he was also surprisingly loving sometimes, too. He would nap for hours in the crook of my arm. If he was playing on the floor, and I called for him, he would come running and leap into my arms.
Binks left me 4 years ago, after fighting a staph infection off and on for over two years.
Two #PrairieDog heads, one #Burrow mound, zero drama.
Sunlit #Grassland watch duty near #Denver #Colorado.
A quick pop up, a snack pause, then back to the entrance.
Who else loves these tiny sentries?

Well fed prairie dogs at the Valles Caldera.
Gunnison's prairie dogs are abundant in the Valles Caldera. They have a complex social structure, with a sophisticated alarm call system, and live in interconnected burrows that have separate areas for sleeping, eating, and waste.

Good Morning #Canada
I know you have been crossing days off on your calendar, and you're excited, but there is still 1 more sleep until #BeaverWeek. To get you through one more day, we have some alternative critter content - the Richardson Ground Squirrel. Commonly called "gophers" or "prairie dogs" across Canada’s prairie provinces, they should not be confused with the Black-tailed Prairie Dog that is rare in Canada. They are generally disliked (putting it mildly) by farmers but tolerated in more urban areas. Hey, they may not be beavers, but we should show them some love because they're cute.

Prairie dogs, the herbivorous burrowing ground squirrels native to the grasslands of North America. They have some of the most complex systems of communication and social structures in the animal kingdom.
