    Welcome to Tynemouth! With the Easter break, and Storm Dave due to wreak havoc across northwest England, we did the only sensible thing and drive away from it.

    Here's a small selection, but there's LOADS MORE from this location, just go here -> iancylkowski.com/posts/tynemou 👍

  6. Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona duit! ☘️

    The Yorkshire Dales and Ireland's Burren share 340-million-year-old Carboniferous limestone.

    But the Dales have 2,500+ caves and 400+ km of passage. The Burren, ~56 caves, but 25,000 hectares of exposed limestone pavement vs. our 1,052.

    Same rock. Very different worlds.

  7. At this time of year, with the low sun and the snow, it's easier to make out the Falls Foot landslip on Ingleborough's western edge.

    This is what remains of a post-glacial landslip, which beautiful exposes the Yoredale sequence of limestone, shale, and sandstone layers, like a geology sandwich.

    Looks like a giant has taken a huge bite out of the mountain, doesn't it?

  8. Bandera Crater is a large cinder cone that erupted approximately 10,000 years ago, creating a 23-mile lava flow & a lava tube system that includes an ice cave. The ice cave is a collapsed lava tube with natural, perpetual ice, the oldest layers of which are over 3,400 years old.

  9. I wonder if anyone can help me identify this rock type, which is a very pale, cream-white layer in-between some harder rock. It lies pretty much at the interface between Ogwen and Marchlyn silt/mudstones on the western flanks of Cwm Pennant (eastern Nantlle ridge).

    As it is in the water, it's clearly very soft and easily eroded. I could dig into it with a fingernail quite easily, broadly like dried-out clay. 🙏

  10. Tracks of "reptiles" hits the news, as they are preserved in the Carboniferous rocks in the Mansfield region of Australia (which happens to be my favourite place). And found by amateur geologists. And it is the oldest evidence of reptiles in the world.

  11. Did you know? The Scottish Highlands, Appalachians, and Atlas Mountains are all one ancient range. 🤯

    The Central Pangean Mountains formed 350-290M years ago, once as tall as the Himalayas.

    Your next Highland hike? You're treading the same rocks as global adventurers.

    Been a while since I picked anything up here. Some quakes have scheduled themselves for when the Wobbleometer is itself feeling a bit wobbly. Hey ho. Got this one though :)

  13. A new one for me - specular hematite (aka specularite), bright silver hexagonal plates and metallic masses in a dark matrix. It got an ultrasonic clean, but otherwise as found, near to one of the concrete ore washing buddles at Bassett and Grylls mine, Wendron, Cornwall.

    There is a lot of really shiny mica and coal dust on this site, but even with a crust of clay over most of it, it it was obvious that this was much brighter, sparkly mineral when I picked it up.

    According to "The geology of Poldark Mine and it's surrounding area" by N. G. LeBoutillier, this mineral is a high temperature one that occurs in the "roots of the lode", indicating that there is not much tin left below - most of it has eroded away from kilometres of rock above the current surface level a long time ago. This is the reason so much of it was present in the soil and stream sediment in the area.

    This time, from Kilcreggan harbour (screenshot included to show the exact line as it intersects the pier and surrounding buildings) out to Camsail by Rosneath.

  22. Around St Monan's

    Exploring the Fife coast.

    An overview of the town; the Old Church at St Monan's; the famous zig-zag harbour breakwater from above; sedimentary rock cycles (mostly limestone, mostly coal-bearing).

    I made a little video of Saturday's explorations:
    the famous zig-zag harbour wall breakwater at St Monan's;
    the Old Church at St Monan's;
    Sedimentary rock cycles (mostly limestone incl coal-bearing forms) at Pittenweem.

    Little boxes on the hillside
    Little boxes all the same 🎵

    One minute you're a lower limestone formation with sedimentary rock cycles, the next someone's gone and stuck a mine through your coal seams stretching across/under the entire Firth of Forth.

  26. Teaching and educating can be fun and rewarding, and today it was my favourite class of the year.

    #UNSW #GEOS1211 Earth and Environmental Science students took part in 'The Sandstone City' field class. An exploration of the Triassic Hawkesbury Sandstone, how it formed, and why it makes such a great building and decorative stone.

    Thanks to my fellow educators Dr Indrani Mukherjee and Di Li Qian.
