¿Sabían que desde principios de los años 90 un pequeño porcentaje de los habitantes de un pueblo en Nuevo México escucha un misterioso ruido que la ciencia no ha podido grabar?
Este fenómeno acústico ocurre en la localidad de Taos y afecta aproximadamente al 2 por ciento de la población, además de a varios turistas que visitan la zona. Quienes tienen la capacidad de percibirlo describen el sonido como un zumbido constante y sordo de baja frecuencia, muy parecido al motor de un camión diésel encendido a la distancia o al zumbido pesado de un transformador eléctrico. Para las personas afectadas, el ruido se vuelve mucho más molesto durante las noches y en el interior de las casas, llegando a provocarles problemas serios de insomnio, dolores de cabeza fuertes, mareos y altos niveles de ansiedad.
La situación llamó tanto la atención que en 1993 el Congreso de los Estados Unidos ordenó una investigación oficial para encontrar la fuente del problema. Equipos de científicos de laboratorios muy importantes, como Los Álamos y Sandía, instalaron micrófonos de alta sensibilidad y sensores en el suelo para medir ondas acústicas, movimientos sísmicos y campos electromagnéticos en toda la región. Los resultados de los estudios fueron completamente inconclusivos, ya que los aparatos de medición médica y ambiental no lograron registrar ninguna vibración extraña en el aire que coincidiera con lo que la gente escuchaba, descartando también que se tratara de fallas en las cañerías del pueblo o del ruido de las torres de alta tensión.
A falta de una respuesta clara, la comunidad científica maneja diferentes hipótesis para intentar resolver el misterio sin caer en fantasías. Algunos investigadores sugieren que el zumbido podría ser un caso especial de emisiones otoacústicas espontáneas, que son pequeños ruidos generados de forma natural por el propio oído interno humano y que muchas personas confunden con un sonido exterior. Otros expertos apuntan a factores ambientales complejos, como el roce de las corrientes de aire contra los desfiladeros del cañón del Río Grande o señales de radio de muy baja frecuencia, dejando el caso como uno de los enigmas de la percepción humana más estudiados de los últimos tiempos.

"The musical advocacy for Peltier's case has a rich history in popular music. #RobbieRobertson (Mohawk), the legendary guitarist and songwriter of The Band, created a particularly powerful statement with his song 'Sacrifice', which incorporated Peltier's own voice through a recorded prison phone call with Robertson. Little Steven (#StevenVanZandt), known for both his work with Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band and his solo career, also contributed to this musical legacy with his own 'Leonard Peltier,' which, like IrieBellion's new release, used Caribbean rhythms to carry its message of justice.
"Peltier, a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of #Chippewa Indians, became involved in the American Indian Movement (#AIM) in the 1970s, a time of tension between Indigneous communities and the U.S. government.
AIM advocated addressing issues such as police brutality, treaty violations, and systemic inequality affecting Native Americans.
"Peltier’s case comes from a 1975 shootout on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, where two FBI agents and a young Native man were killed. "Peltier was convicted in 1977 of killing the agents, but his trial has been widely criticized. Key evidence was withheld by the prosecution, including ballistics reports that could have supported his defense.
"Eyewitness testimony used to extradite Peltier from Canada was later recanted, with the witness stating they were coerced by the FBI. Even the U.S. attorney who handled the case has since admitted that no one knows who fired the fatal shots.
"Peltier has maintained his innocence for nearly five decades, and his case has been condemned by numerous human rights organizations, including #AmnestyInternational. Calls for his release have grown in recent years, with Peltier now in his late seventies and facing health challenges.

I drive a 2012 #VW #Tiguan and have been very happy with it, premium gas requirement aside. I recently looked at the newest version and it's grown. A lot. In fact, so much so that they've introduced a smaller model (#Taos) that's *still* bigger than the one I own.
If this is indicative of how vehicles have changed in the last 10 years, I have no problems seeing why parking spaces don't fit, why fuel economy is middling, and why pedestrians and cyclists are an endangered species.
