Gallup started as a stagecoach stop and a couple of shops back in the 1860s. The railroad chose Gallup as a stop on the western transcontinental route, establishing an office prior in 1881. This pulled workers to town to collect their pay from David Gallup, the paymaster. Hence the phrase, "going to Gallup." Eventually the railroad replaced the stagecoach, only to be replaced decades later by the automobile & Route 66. Throughout, Gallup is a place for travelers.

The Zuni Mountains have big, open meadows and forested slopes with peaks up to 9,256 feet. Loads of trails, lots of camping, and, typically, there aren't many people. The scenery is vastly different than the red sandstone visible from I-40...when there is rain, it is unexpectedly green. 😍

Church Rock is a prominent sandstone formation, known for its distinctive spire that resembles a steeple. Red Rock Park's geology features massive cliffs of Jurassic Entrada Sandstone and rocks from the Morrison and Dakota Formations, all shaped by millions of years of erosion from wind and rain. The reddish color of the sandstone indicates that the sediment was exposed to oxygen before or during burial.

These establishments functioned as cultural and commercial hubs for the Navajo, Zuni, and Hopi, evolving from mercantile stores to specialized purveyors of authentic Native art.
