  1. I have been canvassing for Hope Tinker. Door-to-door there are so many people desperately unhappy with the current regime. Early voting starts today in Missouri. Let's get to the polls!

  2. #introduction

Hi , my name is Mark.

    I'm a retired English gentleman living in #France , married to @theMLW

I've been tinkering on the #fediverse since it started as #Laconica.

    I run ttrss.info and indieweb-hosting.com

I've spent the last decade #cycling in a #velomobile but prefer #walking now.

Some of my current interests are -

  3. #Day18 of #gobtober and #inktober had some prompts which required some consideration when put together. But in the end, I think that I managed to tell a little story with #tinker and #flightless

    What do YOU think?

  4. Hey Fosstodon, I've been away for a while but I'm coming back. Missed this place. Still tinkering with Linux and building little tools, so expect some of that again. How have you all been?

  5. Some #AIboosters I still follow view #openAI in trouble right now with #Anthropic beating them with business users, #META Muse beating them with private users and #openWeight models beating them with tinkerers.

But what would happen to the #AI ecosystem, if open AI went down?
I think this wouldn’t be good for the whole ecosystem because it would at least pull down some of the neo-clouds with them and put some of the hyperscalers in financial trouble.

This could make the bubble pop.

  6. is great for a point-and-click experience. Some 10 years ago Xfce and used to be head-to-head for being the most leight weight. I hear Xfce has become quite the resource hog in recent years.

Nowadays seems to be a better fit for a light-weight point-and-click UX.

I used to daily drive Lxde for a couple of years around the mid 2010s. For a desktop environment offering the same UX, I found it too dependent on tinkering with config files.

  7. saw a reddit discussion today where developers are upset that an interviewer asked them what's the difference between ipv4 and ipv6

ever since reading that I'm wondering if I'm confused because I know this one and would be similarly upset had they asked another question I'm not so sure about?

Or is it rather the difference of me becoming a programmer because I always liked and tinkered with computers (thus being interested in many things not just programming, but databases, networking, security, sysadmin stuff too), and the baffled people probably chasing one narrow segment of this because of money?

  8. Over the past year I replaced 4 SaaS tools with self-hosted ones. Total annual savings: ~$900. Here's the rundown.

    The 4 swaps

    1. Google Drive → Nextcloud

    Was paying: $100/year for 2TB
Now: $0 (runs on my NAS)

Setup: ~2 hours including SSL via Caddy. Mobile apps sync automatically. Sharing works via secure links with passwords.

What I lost: real-time collaborative editing (Google Docs). Workaround: OnlyOffice or Collabora. I personally use OnlyOffice for the rare times I need collab.

What I gained: 2TB local storage with no monthly fee, plus my data lives on my NAS.

    2. Dropbox → Nextcloud (same machine)

Was paying: $120/year for 2TB (kept separate from Google Drive for work/personal split)
    Now: $0

Same Nextcloud instance. Different user accounts.

    3. 1Password → Vaultwarden

Was paying: $60/year for family plan
    Now: $0 (Vaultwarden container)

Setup: ~30 minutes. Import from 1Password CSV. Mobile apps connect to my Vaultwarden instance.

Caveat: NO 2FA recovery codes. If I lose my 2FA, I'm locked out. I keep a printed copy of the master password in a fireproof safe.

    4. Trello → Focalboard

Was paying: $60/year for 3 users
    Now: $0

Setup: ~20 minutes. SQLite-backed, very lightweight.

Caveat: Limited integrations vs Trello. For me this was fine — I just needed kanban.

    Total savings

    • Before: $340/year for 4 SaaS tools
    • After: $0/year (plus electricity ~$50/year for the NAS)
    • Net savings: ~$290/year, breaks even in 18 months vs the NAS hardware cost ($1500)

    What I wouldn't self-host

    • Email: still use Fastmail. Running your own email is a nightmare (deliverability, spam filters, DKIM/SPF/DMARC).
    • Banking apps: not happening.
    • Streaming: I do use Plex but keep Netflix for the back catalog.
    • Photo printing: Shutterfly etc.

Rule of thumb: self-host if you need the data locally anyway OR the SaaS is overpriced for what you use.

    The real cost of self-hosting

    It's not just hardware. It's:

    • 2-4 hours/month maintenance (updates, backups, monitoring)
    • Occasional breakages (Docker update breaks Nextcloud, etc.)
    • Electricity (~$50/year)
    • Time to learn Docker basics

For me it's worth it. For my non-technical friends, it isn't. I tell them to keep paying for SaaS.

    What I'd do differently

    • Start with Vaultwarden — it's the easiest win. Most people can replace 1Password in 30 minutes.
    • Skip Focalboard if you're solo — Trello free tier is enough.
    • Use a reverse proxy (Caddy or Nginx Proxy Manager) — SSL termination in one place.
    • Document your setup — when something breaks at 2am, you want to read your own notes, not debug from scratch.

    A word on WebDAV

All of the above tools support WebDAV. If you only need file access (not the full Nextcloud app), a WebDAV client works great for syncing files. It's lighter than Nextcloud desktop client and works with any cloud storage that exposes WebDAV.

    When SaaS wins

Honestly: most of the time. SaaS is convenient, reliable, and you don't have to think about it. Self-hosting only wins when:

    • You care about data ownership
    • You have technical skills
    • The SaaS is overpriced for your usage
    • You enjoy tinkering

Otherwise, just pay the SaaS and use the time for something else.

    TL;DR

Replaced 4 SaaS tools with self-hosted alternatives. Saved $290/year. Spent $1500 on a NAS that pays for itself in ~5 years. If you enjoy tinkering and value data ownership, do it. Otherwise, pay for SaaS and don't look back.#cloud #opensource #saas #tools #software #coding #development #engineering #inclusive #community

  9. I got a midnight message from a volunteer within our local community food group telling me they're taking down some of our servers until this PHP vuln is patched.

If you're in IT or technically proficient, supporting a local mutual aid or charity group is an amazing way of helping out.

(A lot of people ask me how a person who is unable to meet in person or be physically in proximity with others can help out in community groups - this is an amazing way to do that.)

  10. Well that was a first for me...

Instead of hearing "This call may be recorded for quality assurance purposes..."

...I just heard "This call may be analyzed by AI for quality assurance purposes."

    Lovely.

    Awesome.

  11. Well...

    I started playing Skyrim again...
