  3. NASA’s SpaceX Crew-11 Splashes Down – First ISS Medical Evacuation Complete

History was made for the wrong reasons this week as Crew-11 returned to Earth a month early. For the first time in 65 years of spaceflight, NASA executed a medical evacuation from the ISS due to a crew member's health condition.

  4. Feeling chuffed this week as my scholarly essay, "The Cosmonaut's Body: Medical Politics and Soviet Space Medicine," has just been published in "Hektoen International Journal of Medical Humanities". 🥳

For me, it resonates with my digital artwork "Cosmonaut", currently on display at my exhibition in Lister Waalstraat.

  8. 🚀 Ground control to Major Tom 👨‍🚀 👩‍🚀

Prospective students wanting to explore #weightlessness, cold & #isolation can now embark on a special program: #CharitéBerlin, the University of Caen Normandy, and Jožef Stefan International Postgraduate School are offering a master’s program in #SpaceMedicine & #physiology in extreme environments 🗻 starting in fall.

Apply now! The deadline is March 1.

  10. My favorite #SpaceShuttle fact: on STS-31 (the launch mission for Hubble) and two other DOD-related missions, the Space Shuttle carried Detailed Secondary Objective 469.

What was that cryptic carry-on? A Human Skull.

More elegantly known as the In-flight Radiation Dose Distribution, the skull was wrapped in plastic, cut into ten slices, and covered in dosimeters to measure how much #radiation astronauts get on their noggins.

  13. How much do we know about the #lung toxicity of lunar dust? A nice #spacemedicine review in nature #micogravity by Pohlen et al. summarizes our current knowledge. [1] But why be concerned first place? On Earth, inhaled dusts less than <10 µm can penetrate deeply into the lung and reach the alveolus. [2] There they can persist due to poor bioclearance. Some dusts lead to chronic inflammation, possibly via free radical damage, which can lead to interstitial lung disease / pneumoconiosis.
