👨🚀🚀 In 1984 #NASA #astronaut Bruce McCandless II became the first person in #history to fly untethered in #space using a nitrogen-powered jet pack.
He navigated over 90 meters (300 ft) from the #SpaceShuttle Challenger to demonstrate how #humans can move independently in a vacuum. The flight provided data on orbital maneuvering that helped engineers develop systems for satellite retrieval and repairs.

NEW YORK Has a SPACE SHUTTLE… Obviously I Went
I went to New York… and somehow ended up surrounded by rockets.
From the Space Shuttle Space Shuttle Enterprise sitting inside the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum, to walking through the Hayden Planetarium, this turned into a full accidental space tour.
We’re talking real spacecraft, NASA hardware, cold war era tech, a literal shuttle parked on an aircraft carrier, and way more astronomy stuff than you’d expect in the middle of Manhattan.
No plan. Just walked in… and it kept escalating.
This is what happens when you go looking for “something to do” in New York and end up finding space. 🚀

Bruce McCandless' untethered spacewalk wasn't just iconic. It tested repairs later used to save classified payloads mid-orbit. Public saw magic. Insiders knew the real stakes. 🌌

Last night after watching the Artemis II crew splashdown, I explained to our son that we used to be able to land our shuttle like an airplane. The whole "I Dream of Jeannie" splashdown process feels so retro for this Gen X-er. 🚀

The #SpaceShuttle used hyoergolics for the RCS and OMS. They had a cleaning procedure that had to take place after touchdown and before the hatch was opened.
I'm guessing the sea takes care of that.
I know the Russians have non-hypergolic RCS, (somehow) using gaseous kerosene, but I dont know about anything else.
Wikipedia says the service module uses hyoergolic fuel, but doesn't talk about the capsule's RCS fuel.
This article implies the capsule uses hypergolics, but it's not very clear: https://trendsmask.com/how-much-fuel-is-in-the-orion-capsule-532483.html
