Out cold … in Sunrise, Florida, US, conservation officials are dealing with a spate of iguanas in torpor, handed in by residents who have found the reptiles immobilised by the cold. If temperatures drop low enough, iguanas will drop out of trees and stay immobile until they manage to warm up again.

These revealed a low explanatory power of individual protein-coding #genes for evolutionary shifts in #torpor. In contrast, there is relatively stronger evidence for evolutionary convergence at the level of #pathways. 🧵3/4

To this day, it is not clear whether such evolutionary shifts in torpor occur through similar genetic paths or if lineages can reach #torpor in different ways. To answer this question, we performed several screens across 190 #genomes of placental #mammals. 🧵2/4

To address 3 key questions regarding #torpor #evolution, we compiled a #dataset of a) torpor capabilities and b) 21 ecophysiological variables for 1,338 species of #mammals and #birds.

We then analysed this dataset using a series of #phylogenetic comparative methods.
