  1. the garbage fire group chat: why the absolute worst groups of people make for the absolute best television

there is a very specific type of tv show where you realize about three episodes in that there is not a single person on screen you would willingly choose to be in a room with, much less share an Uber with, and yet you cannot look away because watching a collection of absolute monsters ruin each other’s lives is apparently the highest form of human entertainment it is the "the whole gang sucks" trope and honestly fwiw it is carrying the entire television industry on its back traditionally, […]

  2. the crib curse: can adding a baby ever actually save a tv show?

it is an ancient, undisputed law of television that the exact moment a long-running show introduces a positive pregnancy test, the writers have officially run out of ideas and the series is circling the drain. it usually signals the absolute death of casual hanging out, the sudden disappearance of main characters into background daycare voids, and an influx of incredibly grating, precocious child actors who look like they have never interacted with a real human being in their lives but does […]

  3. Appreciating the seamless blend between It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Abbott Elementary, and how thrilling to think that not only do they exist in the same universe, but the same city!

It's a shame US TV will be going down the shitter shortly, they are very good at it. Let's hope inexpensive sitcoms miss the chop!

  4. I have a theory that the reason TV comedies without a laughter track tend to be less funny is the decision to omit the laughter track.

There tends to be a different reveal moment in more modern style comedies. There tends to be a more subtle reveal, and dialogue less snappy. Jokes are sluggish and they creep up on the viewer, giving at best an "Aheh" moment.

Comedies with the laughter track tend to have more of a 'punchline' feel about them, where reveal cuts and delivery are faster.

It's that kind of quick-quip, punchline-and-laugh nature of the laughter-track comedy that *can* make them funnier and more enjoyable.

    It's just a theory I have.

  5. The Police were upset with the 'pigs' reference but sadly the writers made the classic mistake of not making the sitcom funny.
Should have gone all out on the anti-Police rhetoric instead of being twee I guess...

After picking up the entire series on DVD, how can I not post something? As far as sarcasm goes, this is brilliant and very hard to beat!

  9. You know you're my dad talking to me when I start telling you about this low-budget fantasy movie I watched starring Bud from Night Court as the Satanic villain. This is common, me using a character actor somebody knows as an excuse to tell them about a b-movie they will never watch.

  15. A seminal moment in TV history was Betty Ford's hilarious cameo on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show." Mary thinks it's a prank, and won't believe it's the First Lady on the phone. #marytylermoore #bettyford #tv #television #sitcom #sitcoms #seminal #seminalmoment #tvhistory

  16. Watching an old episode of the Golden Girls, Dorothy makes a new friend who, it turns out, belongs to a club where Jews are not allowed because this exclusive club gives her access to people she wouldn't otherwise be able to meet.

Dorothy tells her to leave and not to come back.

It made me think about all the Jews I know who have been pressured out of their LGBTQ+, Vegan, Free/Open Source Software, or political spaces and if just a few of the non-Jews had stood up and said they were uncomfortable with it and made their opinion known.

  18. There are those channels on #TV that show old TV shows and there is a plethora of old, forgotten #sitcoms whose premise is based around a regular working family.

And the source of humour for many of these comedies is one of the characters doing something mildly, vaguely unusual for a family of their social standing.
