#Cocktail - Perfect Martini
60ml Gin, 15ml Dry Vermouth, 15ml Red Vermouth, Lemon twist. Optional : dash angostura, dash orange
Still no sure where the sweet spot is. This can be anything from 1:1:1 to 4:1:1 as here. Or maybe even 6:1:1. And with or without the bitters.
Hmmm. A Wet Martini, with split Vermouth. Or a split Gin&It. Or some kind of Gin "Perfect Manhattan." They're all different.

CW: alc alcohol cocktails eldritch horror
I understand this movie is a wild and irreverent pre-make of "Twins" So in that spirit I've come up with what I think is a great drink for "The Dunwich Horror" called:
:cthulhu: 🧃 THE DOUBLE YOG 🧃 :cthulhu:
ingredients:
2oz añejo rum
.5oz aguardente bagaço (sub grappa)
1oz Green Chartreuse/Boomsma/similar
1oz falernum
1oz lime juice
.5oz pineapple/coconut water (or Malibu and a few drops of pineapple juice)Instructions:
Shake all ingredients well and pour into your favorite tall glass(es, this is a double but I'm not your boss or anything). Garnish with pineapple wedge or one of those spears that comes pickled in the coconut/pineapple juice.
The Bagaço is pretty niche but use it if you have it! Grappa should fill in nicely to add a little dirt in the mix to balance out all the sweet and tangy and tinge of weird Christmas spice in this one. I'm definitely making this one again!#monsterdrink #monsterdrinks #cocktail

OLD THINGS BELONG TO SPERANZA
Winter melted into a bright, warm spring in the hills of Speranza. The green trees grew new leaves, and the village square was full of people enjoying the sun.
Inside La Pagina che Fa le Fusa, the air smelled like sweet orange tea and fresh baking. The shop bell rang with a happy sound, and Elio walked in.
He did not look like the stressed, rushed chef from the city anymore. He wore a simple white apron and carried a warm, covered plate. He walked to the heavy oak counter with a big, relaxed smile.
“Good morning, Moira,” Elio said. He set the plate down and lifted the cover. “I brought us lunch. I made traditional piadina bread, but I tried something new. I put fresh avocado directly into the dough while I was rolling it, instead of using it as a filling. It makes the bread perfectly soft, but the soul of the recipe is still the old way.”
Moira took a piece of the warm, pale-green bread. She tasted it and closed her eyes happily. “It is wonderful, Elio. You have finally learned how to mix the new with the old.”
They sat together in the comfortable velvet chairs, drinking hot tea and eating the piadina. They were no longer rivals. They were a team. Elio often came to the tea shop to ask Moira about wild herbs, and Moira often went to his kitchen to taste his slow-cooked soups.
Across the room, behind the heavy wooden counter, Moira had built a beautiful new glass display box on the wall.
Inside the glass box, resting safely on red velvet, were the two magic books. The dusty blue cover of The Days of the Dreams sat right next to the shining white leather of its twin. The silver sleeping cats on the covers looked completely at peace.
The people of Speranza did not know the scary truth about the shadows or the dark magic. Moira and Elio decided to keep that a secret to protect the village. Instead, Moira told everyone that the books were just very old, beautiful historical records of the town.
The village loved them. People felt a warm, safe energy coming from the glass box.
Later that afternoon, Marisa walked in from the chocolate shop, followed by Altea from the cigar house. Marisa walked right up to the glass box and gently touched the wood frame.
“I don’t know what it is about these old books,” Marisa said with a smile. “But ever since you put them up here, the village feels lighter. Even my chocolate is tasting sweeter.”
Altea blew a small puff of smoke and nodded. “They are good luck. Old things belong in Speranza.”
Moira looked at Elio, and they shared a quiet, secret smile.
Up on top of the glass box, Toe the black cat was fast asleep. Ashwaganda, the big ginger cat, sat next to him, watching the shop with bright, happy eyes. They were the true guards of the village, but today, they did not have to fight.
The magic was resting, the village was safe, and the tea sanctuary was filled with the perfect warmth of good friends.

A twin to The Days of the Dreams.
The black fog slid across the terracotta floor of the tea shop like a living river of ice. Every glass jar on Moira’s shelves began to frost over, the dried herbs inside freezing white. The warm, comforting smell of chamomile and old paper was completely swallowed by the bitter scent of deep winter and ancient dust.
Toe, the black cat, stood on the very edge of the oak counter. He hissed, a sharp, angry sound, while Ashwaganda stood tall beside him, his orange fur puffed out like a shield.
“Stay behind me, Elio,” Moira whispered. Her breath was a thick white cloud in the freezing air.
Elio walked slowly out of the back kitchen. He was holding the heavy wooden bowl with both hands. The ossobuco and the fresh, golden pasta were steaming perfectly, radiating a deep, rich heat. The smell of the roasted meat, the sweet tomatoes, and the old wine fought against the cold fog, creating a wall of warm air around the chef.
“Where do I put it?” Elio asked, his teeth chattering from the sudden, unnatural cold.
“On the counter. Right between the two books,” Moira ordered.
Elio stepped forward. The shadows on the walls seemed to reach for him, long black fingers stretching out to grab the bowl. But the heat of the traditional food pushed them back. Elio placed the wooden bowl carefully onto the heavy oak wood, right between the dusty blue cover of The Days of the Dreams and the pristine white cover of its newly found twin.
The moment the bowl touched the wood, the black fog stopped moving along the floor.
Slowly, the fog began to rise. It gathered in the center of the room, pulling itself up into a tall, towering pillar of pure darkness. It had no face and no eyes, but Moira and Elio could feel it looking at them. It felt like a bottomless, starving void—an emptiness that had not been warm in a thousand years.
Elio took a step back, terrified.
Moira did not move. She stood tall, placed one hand on her blue book, and looked directly into the dark shadow.
“We offer you the memory of the hearth,” Moira said in a loud, clear voice. She remembered the words of the riddle. “We bring you the marrow of the bone, slow-cooked in the tears of the hills. We bind it with the golden sheet, stretched only by human hands.”
The towering shadow let out a sound. It was not a voice, but a low, hollow wind that rattled the teacups on their shelves.
The dark shape leaned forward, hovering directly over the steaming wooden bowl.
Elio grabbed Moira’s arm, ready to pull her away. But Moira shook her head. “Watch,” she whispered.
The shadow did not eat the food like a person or an animal would. Instead, it opened wide and breathed in. The thick, rich steam rising from the hot pasta and the roasted marrow was pulled straight up into the darkness.
As the shadow swallowed the heat, the smell, and the soul of the carefully cooked meal, something amazing happened. The pure black fog began to turn gray. The terrible, freezing cold in the room began to soften.
The shadow breathed in again, drinking the human effort, the patience, and the tradition that Elio had rolled into the pasta dough. The darkness turned lighter and lighter, until it looked like ordinary morning mist.
With one final, quiet sigh that sounded almost peaceful, the mist evaporated completely into the air.
The desk lamp flickered and turned back on. The frost on the glass jars melted into tiny drops of water. The fire in the back room roared back to life, filling the tea shop with warmth once again.
Ashwaganda stopped puffing his fur and let out a long, happy purr. Toe jumped down from the counter and started to wash his paws.
Elio slowly walked up to the oak counter and looked into the wooden bowl.
The ossobuco and the pasta were still there. But they had completely changed. The rich red tomato sauce was totally gray. The golden yellow of the egg pasta was dull and white. The meat looked dry as dust. There was no steam, no smell, and no heat.
“It took the life out of it,” Elio whispered, staring at the bowl in shock. “It ate the essence of the food.”
“It ate the memory,” Moira corrected gently. She closed the covers of both the blue and white books. “It was starving for warmth. You gave it a meal made with care, patience, and human hands. A machine could never have made a meal that could defeat a shadow, Elio.”
Elio looked at his flour-covered hands. He had always cooked for awards, for speed, and for modern perfection. But tonight, he had cooked to save a village.
“I understand now,” the chef said softly. He looked at Moira with true respect. “Tradition is not just about the past. It is about keeping the warmth alive for the future.”
Moira smiled. She took the wooden bowl of gray, empty food and tossed it into the trash bin.
“Now,” Moira said, tying her apron back on. “Since the shadow ate your dinner, how about we go into the kitchen and make another batch of that hand-rolled pasta? Just for us this time.”
Elio smiled back, his fear finally gone. “Only if you let me show you how to chop the wild mallow for the salad.”

The shadow is the coldness of time.
The tea shop was plunged into a heavy, suffocating silence. The glowing blue light had vanished, leaving only the warm, ordinary flicker of the desk lamp.
Elio stood frozen, staring at the two books on the oak counter. He looked down at his flour-dusted hands, as if realizing for the first time that his culinary skills were entirely useless against ancient magic.
“I am a chef, Moira,” Elio said, his voice barely a whisper. “I use sous-vide machines. I use liquid nitrogen. I do not know how to cook a meal for a magical shadow that wants to eat a village.”
Moira gently stroked Ashwaganda’s head to calm the large ginger cat. “Magic in Speranza is old, Elio. And old things do not want modern tricks. They want memory. They want tradition.”
She carefully reached out and touched the pristine white leather of the new book. The moment her fingers brushed the cover, the book fell open to the center. The pages were pitch black, but slowly, a silver drawing began to trace itself into the paper. It was an illustration of a heavy cast-iron pot hanging over an open wood fire.
Beneath the drawing, a new riddle appeared in sharp, glowing letters:
The shadow is the coldness of time. It must be warmed by the memory of the hearth. Feed it the marrow of the bone, slow-cooked in the tears of the hills. Bind it with the golden sheet, stretched only by human hands, never by iron teeth.
Elio leaned over the counter, his chef’s mind automatically translating the riddle into a recipe.
“The marrow of the bone,” Elio muttered, his eyes tracing the silver words. “That is ossobuco. Veal shanks, rich with marrow in the center. ‘Slow-cooked in the tears of the hills’… that must be the local red wine and the spring water we just found.”
Moira tapped the final line of the riddle. “‘The golden sheet, stretched only by human hands, never by iron teeth.’ The book is very clear, Elio. No machines.”
Elio swallowed hard. “It wants sfoglia tirata al mattarello. Traditional, hand-rolled egg pasta. Stretched with a wooden rolling pin until it is thin enough to see the light through it.” He looked at Moira, a mix of fear and realization dawning on his face. “You were right. The machine has no soul. And the shadow is hungry for a soul.”
“Exactly,” Moira said, closing the white book. She picked up her heavy iron ring of keys. “We cannot use your modern kitchen. It is full of steel and electricity. The magic will reject it. We have to use the old wood-burning stove in the back room of my shop.”
Elio wiped his hands on his apron, suddenly looking determined. The fear was gone, replaced by the sharp focus of a chef preparing for the most important dinner service of his life.
“We need ingredients, Moira. Immediately. I need veal shanks, fresh eggs, fine flour, and the oldest wine in this village.”
“I have the wine in my cellar,” Moira said, moving quickly toward the back of the shop. “And Marisa’s cousin is the butcher. He lives just behind the chocolate shop. I will go wake him up and get the ossobuco. You stay here. Start the fire in the cast-iron stove.”
“Wait,” Elio said, stopping her. “What about the wild mallow we picked? The botanical element?”
Moira looked back at him, her hand on the doorknob. “Leave it. Tonight, we do not innovate. We honor the past.”
Moira ran out into the village square. The sun had completely set, but the darkness falling over Speranza did not feel normal. The shadows in the alleyways seemed too thick, too dense. They looked as if they were slowly creeping forward, stretching across the cobblestones toward the tea shop. The “old hunger” was already waking up.
Ten minutes later, Moira returned with a heavy paper package wrapped in twine from the butcher. When she stepped into the back room of her shop, the air was already thick with heat and the smell of burning oak.
Elio had taken off his chef’s coat. He was standing at the large wooden table, a mountain of yellow flour piled in the center. He cracked six fresh eggs into a well in the middle of the flour and began to beat them with a wooden fork. His movements were fast, precise, and completely traditional.
“I have the meat,” Moira said, placing the heavy cuts of ossobuco on the counter. The marrow inside the bones was perfect and pale.
“Start searing them in the cast-iron pot,” Elio ordered, not looking up from his dough. He was working the flour and eggs together with his bare hands, feeling the elasticity, feeling the life of the pasta. “Brown them in butter, not oil. Then deglaze with your old wine.”
For the next two hours, the back room of La Pagina che Fa le Fusa turned into a furious, focused kitchen. The smell of the ossobuco simmering in wine, rich broth, and crushed tomatoes filled the air, thick and comforting.
Elio took Moira’s heavy wooden rolling pin—the mattarello—and began to stretch the golden dough. He rolled it back and forth, pressing his weight into the wood, turning the pasta until it was a massive, perfectly thin sheet. He was sweating, his arms aching, but he did not stop.
As the stew bubbled and the pasta was sliced into wide, golden ribbons, Ashwaganda let out a low growl from the doorway.
Moira looked toward the front of the tea shop. The normal darkness of the night had vanished. Under the crack of the front door, a thick, freezing black fog was seeping into the room. The shadows on the walls began to twist and grow taller, reaching out like long, hungry fingers.
The temperature in the shop plummeted. The fire in the stove hissed as the cold air hit it.
“Elio,” Moira said, her breath turning to white mist in the air. “It is here. Is the food ready?”
Elio picked up a heavy wooden bowl. He placed a large, steaming piece of ossobuco inside, the marrow glistening in the center of the bone. He surrounded it with the fresh, hand-rolled pasta, completely coated in the dark, rich sauce.
“It is ready,” Elio said, his voice tight. “But how do we feed it?”

“It is peaceful, Just like good cooking should be.”
Elio jumped back in fear. His flour-covered hands hit the wooden shelves behind him, knocking over a small jar of dried apple slices. The jar hit the floor, but neither of them looked at it.
The icy blue light from the white leather book grew brighter. It filled the dark tea shop, making the shadows on the walls look long and strange.
“Moira,” Elio whispered, his voice shaking. “What is happening? Books do not glow.”
“Stand back, Elio,” Moira said. Her voice was very steady, even though her heart was beating fast. She did not look away from the rusted iron box.
Toe, the black cat, let out a loud, angry yowl. He jumped down from the top shelf and stood on the counter next to Moira. Ashwaganda joined him. Both cats stared at the white book. Their fur was standing up, making them look twice as big.
Suddenly, the heavy cover of the white book flipped open all by itself.
Elio gasped and grabbed Moira’s arm. “Did you see that? There is no wind in here!”
Moira gently pulled her arm away. “I saw it. Do not be afraid. But do not touch it.”
She leaned over the counter to look at the open pages. The pages inside the white book were not yellow or creamy like her own book. They were completely black, like the night sky.
As they watched, glowing silver letters began to write themselves across the dark paper. The writing moved quickly, spelling out a message in the cold blue light.
Moira read the words out loud:
The twin wakes from the dark earth. The cook was called to the water. The old hunger returns to the hills.
Elio stepped closer, his eyes wide. He looked at the glowing words, then he looked at Moira. “The cook was called to the water? That means me. I went to the water to find the wild mallow. Are you telling me this… this magic book made me want to go there?”
Moira looked at him sadly. “Magic is like a magnet, Elio. It pulls things to it. It pulls people to it. You thought the wild mallow was your own idea for a new recipe. But the book was waiting to be found. It used you to wake up.”
Elio rubbed his face with his hands. He looked like he was trying to wake up from a very strange dream. “This is crazy. This is a quiet village in Italy. We make pasta and drink tea. Magic is not real.”
Moira knew it was time to share her biggest secret. If Elio was part of this now, he needed to know the truth.
She reached under the heavy oak counter. She pulled out her own book, The Days of the Dreams, with its dusty blue cover and the silver sleeping cat.
Elio stared at it. “There are two of them?”
“Yes,” Moira said quietly. “Mine is the blue book. I found it years ago. It helps protect Speranza. It warns me when danger is coming. But I did not know it had a twin.”
Moira placed her blue book on the counter, right next to the rusted metal box that held the white book.
As soon as the two books were close to each other, the air in the room felt heavy. A warm, golden light began to glow from Moira’s blue book. It mixed with the icy blue light of the white book.
The silver letters in the white book faded away. New words began to write themselves, but this time, the words flowed across both books at the same time. The writing started on the black pages of the white book and finished on the yellow pages of the blue book.
Light and shadow meet again. The gates of the old hunger are open. You must feed the shadow, or it will eat the village.
The light from both books flashed brightly, and then, suddenly, they both went totally dark. The glowing stopped. The shop was quiet again.
Elio was breathing heavily. He pointed at the black pages of the white book. “Feed the shadow? What does that mean, Moira? Feed it what?”
Moira looked down at her hands. They were shaking just a little bit. She thought about the warning. The old hunger returns.
“I don’t know yet,” Moira admitted, looking up at the worried chef. “But I think your cooking is going to be very important, Elio. And I think we are going to need more than just wild mallow to save Speranza this time.”

The Rabbit Paradox: How Fixing Australian History Handed Power to the Emus
If you could erase one event from history, what would it be?
If humanity had a single, golden lever to undo one moment in time, the gut instinct is always the catastrophic: wars, plagues, assassinations, or the burning of ancient libraries. Yet, history has a cruel way of teaching us that removing a monster often leaves a vacuum for a worse one, and curing a plague early might shift the balance of populations into brutal famines.
If I could erase one single, deceptively small event from the tapestry of time, it would be the 1859 introduction of twenty-four wild European rabbits into Victoria, Australia, by a well-meaning English settler named Thomas Austin.
Austin famously remarked that the introduction of a few rabbits could do little harm and might provide a touch of home, in addition to a spot of hunting. That single afternoon of nostalgic homesickness unleashed what became the fastest mammal invasion in biological history. Within decades, billions of rabbits had swept across the entire continent, stripping away root systems, turning fertile valleys into desolate red dust bowls, starving native marsupials to extinction, and warping an entire nation’s ecology forever. Erasing Austin’s little wooden crate of bunnies would save tens of millions of native lives, protect the fragile topsoil, and spare generations of farmers endless grief.
Yet, tampering with time never goes cleanly.
When the temporal distortion device hummed to life in our subterranean laboratory, the logic felt airtight. We targeted the Victorian docks in October 1859. The mission was surgically simple: intercept the shipping manifest, quietly drop the crate of twenty-four rabbits overboard into the English Channel before departure, and allow the timeline to settle into an era of green, unbroken Australian flora.
The machine whined, a sound like tearing silk, and reality collapsed inward.
The immediate side effect was not silence, but an aggressive, screeching shift across the digital fabric of the universe. In an instant, the timeline tried to stitch its threads back together. Whole economies that had been built around rabbit-proof fencing, Australian agriculture, and outback ecology collapsed and rearranged themselves into new digital systems.
Across modern offices, computer terminals flickered violently. Systems crashed as the cascade of historical variables forced every piece of modern infrastructure to rewrite itself on the fly.
Deep inside a nondescript government office in Melbourne, an overworked web developer named Liam sat frozen in front of his monitor. His screen was screaming in crimson errors. The sudden temporal divergence had corrupted every major public service network. The national infrastructure portal was offline, throwing chaotic status codes across every browser window.
Liam’s heart slammed against his ribs. The server room in the hallway began to wail with warning sirens. The internal logs read that if the central administrative interface was not rebuilt and validated against web accessibility standards within ninety seconds, the entire national emergency communication grid would lock out every operator in the country.
His breath caught in his throat. His fingers hovered over the keyboard, slick with cold sweat.
He had to remember the core principles of building an accessible, unbreakable system before the failure cascade went critical.
Every single page needed an informative, unique title that placed the most important details first. He slammed into the code, hammering out structural markup to convey pure meaning, ensuring screen readers and automated engines would never get lost in a flat wall of visual chaos.
Thirty seconds left.
The screen blinked with an ominous warning: Input Validation Failure.
He had to ensure the forms were forgiving of human error, clearly showing where problems occurred and suggesting corrections instead of locking panicked users behind technical jargon. He added meaningful text alternatives to every operational graphic, ensuring that critical interactive buttons possessed distinct visible states for mouse hover, touch, and keyboard focus.
Ten seconds. The room went pitch black, illuminated only by the frantic white glow of his monitor.
Liam hit the tab key, verifying that every single control could be reached and executed by a keyboard alone, bypassing every broken mouse driver and failing touch panel across the continent. He mapped the high-contrast palettes, ensuring foreground text stood boldly apart from the background.
Three seconds.
He held his breath. The entire room went dead silent. He pressed the final compile key.
The sirens stopped. The screen settled into a crisp, clean, perfectly accessible white interface. The red warnings vanished. The emergency broadcast system was alive and stable.
Liam collapsed backward into his chair, letting out the breath he felt he had held for an eternity. The world was intact. The ecosystem was saved.
Then, the first digital notification of the new, altered reality pinged on his dashboard:
Notice: Due to the total historical absence of European rabbits across the continent since 1859, the wild emu population has grown unchecked and now legally commands seventy percent of the Australian Senate.

Kun #kuohuviini + persikka = Bellini
niin onko

Kun mulla ois sekä kuoharia, että papajanektaria, niin mietin yhdistämiskokeilua.

This is way outside my usual wheelhouse. It's a food review.
So, #Loblaw and its umpteen variants and brandings have a new series of President's Choice potato chip flavours. It's called the "Canadian Series" in their "World of Flavours". Trying to cash in on the newfound Canadian patriotism, I guess.
I don't remember all the flavours. There's poutine, of course, though I haven't bought that one.
There's "Halifax Donair", which I did try. Was not impressed. Kind of a mystery meat-ish base flavour with some not-too-specific seasonings on top. I really like donairs, but this didn't remind me of it very much.
The other one I bought was "Spicy Caesar". I like the cocktail, but I was worried that this one would end up tasting like ketchup chips (which I dislike) with a bit of something else added. I was pleasantly surprised; it doesn't taste of ketchup chips. The tomato tastes like actual tomato juice. Presumably there's a note of clam in there, though it's too subtle for me to pick up. There's definitely some celery salt (or at least celery root) flavour. And there's a little spice kick to it, like tabasco (and maybe worchestershire). Surprisingly good!
So, cocktail-flavoured potato chips: works, at least for this cocktail.

MYSTERY IN BLUE
A TRAVEL TROUBLES NOTES STORY
THE ECHO OF THE BLUE MOUNTAINS
Book III: An Australia Day Mystery
CHAPTER 1: THE TIMEOUT TRAPIt was Australia Day, and the heat was enough to melt the CSS off a stylesheet. The Three Best Friends—Liam, Dax, and Dev—were driving their trusty 4WD up the winding roads of the Blue Mountains. The esky was chockers with lamingtons and snags, and the mood was “she’ll be right”.
“I reckon we camp near the Three Sisters,” Dax said, adjusting his sunglasses. “Great view, high contrast, easy navigation.”
But as they approached Katoomba, the car’s dashboard display flickered. A countdown timer appeared on the GPS screen:
SESSION EXPIRING IN 10 SECONDS.“Dev, extend the session!” Liam yelled.
Dev reached for the “Continue” button, but the car hit a pothole. His finger slipped.
3… 2… 1…
The GPS went black. The engine sputtered. The car rolled to a halt on the shoulder of the highway.
“It’s the Timeout Trap,” Dev groaned. “The system didn’t give us enough time to interact. It violated the rule: Provide users enough time to read and use content”.
The Genial Fix
“A standard timeout is fine for security,” Liam said, wiping sweat from his brow. “But for a critical task like driving? We need an option to turn off, adjust, or extend the time limit”.
Liam pried open the dashboard panel. He found the physical timer relay. “I’m bypassing the default setting. I’m hard-coding an exception for ‘Real-time Activity’.”
He twisted two wires together. The screen roared back to life, but the map was different. The roads weren’t marked with names; they were marked with code.
“We aren’t in Katoomba anymore,” Dax whispered. “We’re in the Source Code.”
CHAPTER 2: THE RECURSIVE RAVINE
They hiked into the valley, but the path was behaving strangely. Every time they walked 100 meters, they found themselves passing the same gum tree.
“It’s an infinite loop!” Dax cried. “We’re stuck in a recursive function without an exit condition!”
“It’s worse,” Dev said, pointing to a signpost. It spun wildly, the arrows changing direction every second. “The navigation is inconsistent. One minute the ‘Home’ link is on the left, the next it’s in the footer.”
A voice boomed from the canyon walls—a distorted, echoing laugh.
“Welcome to the Echo. Navigation is fluid here. Try to find the breadcrumb trail.”
“Breadcrumbs!” Liam realized. “The Echo is mocking us. We need to create a Site Map to understand the structure of the valley.”
The Physical Site Map
Dax grabbed a stick and began drawing in the red dirt. “If the visual path is broken, we rely on the DOM order.”
He mapped the landmarks like HTML elements: : The Sky (Always visible) : The Valley Floor (Where the content is) : The River (The end of the page)
“The Loop is in the ,” Dev noticed, looking at Dax’s map. “We’ve been walking in a sidebar! We need to Skip to Main Content.”
“Skip Links!” Liam shouted. “Find the anchor!”
They spotted a hidden trail marker labeled #main-content. They jumped over the barrier, breaking the loop and landing on the true path toward the Three Sisters.
CHAPTER 3: THE VOICE OF THE SISTERS
They reached the famous rock formation, but the viewing platform was deserted. A single, massive microphone stood at the edge of the cliff, pointing at the rocks.
“To pass,” the Echo’s voice thundered, “You must speak the Password. But be warned: The Echo listens to all inputs.”
“It’s a Voice Input Control,” Dev said. “But look at the wind. It’s blowing a gale. The background noise is too high.”
Liam stepped up to the mic. “Open Sesame!”
The wind howled. The system responded: “Did you say ‘Open Salami’?”
“No!” Liam yelled. “Cancel! Undo!”
The system processed the command: “Ordering Salami.”
“It’s an Error Prevention nightmare!” Dax panicked. “For inputs that cause legal commitments or financial transactions, we must be able to reversible, checked, or confirmed”.
The Modal Trap
A holographic receipt appeared in the air, blocking their path.
CONFIRM PURCHASE?There was no “Cancel” button. Only “Yes.”
“It’s a Focus Trap,” Dev said. “I can’t tab away from the ‘Yes’ button. We need to force a keyboard interrupt.”
“Don’t speak,” Liam whispered. “Switch input modalities. The WCAG guidelines say users should be able to switch between input modes (voice, keyboard, mouse) at any time.”
Liam plugged his portable keyboard into the base of the microphone. He typed: ESCAPE.
The receipt vanished. The “Salami” order was cancelled.
“Fair crack of the whip,” Liam muttered. “That was close.”
CHAPTER 4: THE FOG OF #CCCCCC
They descended the Giant Stairway, but a thick fog rolled in. It wasn’t just white; it was a flat, featureless gray.
“I can’t see the steps,” Dax said, freezing in place. “The contrast ratio between the stone and the fog is 1:1. It’s invisible.”
“The Echo has lowered the contrast of the world,” Dev realized. “It’s targeting users with low vision.”
Dax, the designer, pulled out his “High Contrast” visor—a pair of augmented reality goggles he used for testing.
“I’m switching to High Contrast Mode,” Dax announced. “I’m inverting the colors.”
Through the goggles, the gray fog turned black, and the stone steps glowed neon yellow.
“Follow me!” Dax shouted. “I’ve got sufficient contrast!”
The Text-Only Fallback
But then the fog thickened, blocking even the AR signal. Dax stopped. “I’ve lost the visual.”
“Don’t rely on sensory characteristics alone,” Liam recited. “Don’t rely on shape, size, or visual location”.
Liam closed his eyes. He reached out and felt the railing. It had Braille markings etched into the steel.
“The railing has a text alternative!” Liam said. “It says: ‘Step 842. Turn Left.'”
They descended the rest of the stairs by touch, guided by the tactile “Alt-Text” of the mountain.
CHAPTER 5: THE PHANTOM’S SERVER
At the bottom of the valley, they found it. Not a cave, but a bunker. The door was marked with the “Echo” symbol—a sound wave eating its own tail.
“This is where the Australian Day broadcast is coming from,” Dev said. “If we don’t fix the accessibility settings, the Prime Minister’s speech will be broadcast without captions, without Audio Description, and in a font size no one can read.”
They burst inside. The server room was unguarded, but the console was protected by the ultimate barrier.
A CAPTCHA.
But not just any CAPTCHA. It was a grid of 16 images of Australian animals.
“Select all the Quokkas,” the computer sneered.
“They all look like Quokkas!” Liam yelled. “That one might be a Wallaby! Or a small Kangaroo!”
“It’s a cognitive barrier,” Dev said. “It relies on cultural knowledge and visual acuity. It’s inaccessible.”
The Biometric Twist
“We need an alternative,” Dax said. “Look for the audio icon.”
There was none.
“Wait,” Liam said. “This system is old. It’s running on Legacy Code. It probably supports ‘Device Authentication’.”
Liam pulled out his USB key—his “Authorized User” token.
“Not requiring CAPTCHAs for authorized users,” Liam grinned, plugging it in.
The screen flashed green. AUTHENTICATED.
CHAPTER 6: THE FINAL REFACTOR
They had access. Now they had to patch the broadcast before it went live in 5 minutes.
Dev worked on the player. “I’m adding a transcript toggle. I’m ensuring the media player keyboard controls are standard.”
Dax worked on the visuals. “I’m fixing the color palette. No more red-on-green text. I’m boosting the luminance.”
Liam worked on the content. The speech was written in dense, academic English.
“I’m simplifying,” Liam muttered. “Short sentences. Plain Language. Expanding acronyms.”
3… 2… 1…
The “On Air” light turned red.
On screens all across Australia—from the pubs in Sydney to the stations in the Outback—the broadcast appeared.
It was perfect.
The captions were synced.
The Audio Description described the flag waving in the wind.
The text was readable, high-contrast, and clear.
“She’ll be right,” the Prime Minister said on screen.
“She certainly will be,” Liam smiled, collapsing into a beanbag chair in the corner of the bunker.
EPILOGUE: THE NULL ISLAND
The sun was setting over the Blue Mountains, painting the Three Sisters in gold and purple. The Three Best Friends sat on the bunker roof, eating the lamingtons that had miraculously survived the trek.
“We did good,” Dax said. “We made Australia Day accessible.”
“But who built the Echo?” Dev asked, holding up a strange, black microchip he had pulled from the server.
Liam took it. Etched into the silicon were coordinates.
0°N 0°E.
“Zero Zero,” Liam whispered. “That’s Null Island. The place where bad data goes to die.”
“There’s no land there,” Dax said. “It’s just ocean off the coast of Africa.”
“That’s what the maps say,” Dev said, his eyes gleaming with a new mystery. “But the code says otherwise. Someone is building a digital fortress at Null Island. And they just pinged us.”
Liam stood up, dusting the crumbs off his shorts.
“Well,” he grinned. “I’ve always wanted to go on a cruise.”
“Pack your togs,” Dax laughed.
“And your keyboards,” Dev added.
The Three Best Friends looked at the horizon. The Blue Mountains were behind them, but the Ocean of Null was waiting.

My aperitif today is a Bee’s Knees, made with Mike’s hot honey. It adds a little bit of a kick to this lemon and gin drink.

In honor of Monday's inauguration I've been making cocktails.
Specifically the "Lite Treason" (by Beau Burtnick @ Kask , Portland Oregon).
Modified White Russian (vodka, coffee liqueur, Cynar) under sweetened Mezcal hand whipped cream.
A good drink for a bad day.

Basil Smash with lime, two different gins
I think with Hendricks (green) it's better tasting, complements the basil better, but the Empress Elderflower Rose (pink) is just so pretty :BlobhajTinyHeart:

I gotta agree, a #Caesar may be the world's most perfect #cocktail.
Olives are new to me, though. @jwz occasionally posted "What's On My Bloody Mary?" and some of the ones I've run into in pubs/restaurants seemed up that alley. Dill pickle and #pickled #asparagus were some of the least-strange (and most tasty!) ones.
Anyway, enjoy!

I’m gonna tell kids these were Bloody Marys.
