  3. The 1967-68 UK TV series Man in a Suitcase takes the basic ITC action-adventure formula and adds a hardboiled flavour, real toughness, grittiness, plus seedy downmarket glamour. And more than a hint of film noir. The best of all the ITC series.

  4. Peter Leslie’s The Cornish Pixie Affair, from 1967, the fifth original novel based on the TV spy series The Girl from UNCLE starts with a murder in a circus (a setting that is used extremely well). Statuettes of pixies play a role. Enjoyable.

  5. The Sixth Finger, a 1963 episode of The Outer Limits. A scientist tries to speed up human evolution. He creates a super-intelligent man, who sadly has a few issues. A bold and interesting episode.

  6. M Squad was a 1957-60 NBC US TV cop series starring Lee Marvin. Action-packed, hard-edged, with a film noir vibe. It dives right into the seamy side of life. Marvin oozes charisma. He's like a pressure cooker about to blow. Superb TV.

  7. Venus Smith, the forgotten Avengers girl. She was Steed's partner in six 1963 episodes. Fascinatingly different from the other Avengers girls. She had zero combat skills but she was a useful agent. And quite charming.

  8. The Interrogators, a great 1969 Tara King episode of The Avengers, written by Richard Harris and Brian Clemens. Christopher Lee guest stars. Starts with a British agent being interrogated by the bad guys, then the twists begin.

  9. At the time Brian Clemens' tough gritty violent British TV spy series The Professionals attracted a lot of attention and some outrage. The 1979 3rd season is pretty strong with just one dud episode. Stylish and action-packed.

  10. W. Howard Baker’s Storm Over Rockall, the third of the six Danger Man TV tie-in novels. It's an original novel but with similarities to the TV episode Not So Jolly Roger. Someone is sabotaging a British rocket program. It could the Russians, or it could be the Americans.

  11. Dead Duck is an original 1966 novel inspired by the TV series The Avengers. It was credited to Patrick Macnee but was written by Peter Leslie. People keep dying and they've all eaten duck. An engagingly offbeat story with a fine crazy finale.

  12. Man in a Suitcase (1967-68), a British ITC action adventure series TV series with a decidedly gritty hardboiled flavour to it. Richard Bradford’s offbeat performance as a bitter ex-CIA agent turned private eye is the highlight.

Much more hard-edged and cynical than most ITC series.
    Superb television.

  13. The first two seasons of Special Branch, made in 1969 and 1970, stand as some of the finest TV espionage drama ever made.

Shot in the style of British TV at that time, in black-and-white on video and mostly in the studio, the series relied on superb writing and an atmosphere of moral ambiguity and paranoia. Brilliant television.
