Is there any way to limit the size of files you receive from other instances?

My #Mastodon server often receives huge files -- 100s of MBs in size (videos). I'd rather block them. My Media Usage can get out of hand very quickly.

I can see anything in the docs.

I also run a #GoToSocial instance, and I can limit what I receive. It just means the user has to click a link to open the file on the remote instance. Seems a great solution.

Anyone put their site behind Cloudflare? It seems like a simple process with just A records. Is the performance and security worth it? I'm looking at the free plan for their CDN/Reverse Proxy/DDoS services.

The one thing that annoys me about Mastodon is the loading times. I have a fibreoptic internet connection routed via two proxy servers in order to keep my communications secure and, even so, my internet speed is barely touched by this setup because the servers are also of very good integrity. I guess what I am getting at is that I think some of these server admins are being a little cheap regarding the money spent on their hosting. So, my creative mind gets to going and wonders if there is a way to balance the load between all servers in a manner similar to IPFS so that when one is lagging, another picks up the slack 🤔

I migrated from mastodon.green after a number of disagreements there, including the refusal to cover non-Western #languages (the excuse was technical but many #serveradmins believe it is ideological -even blocking it- & I am starting to believe it). Did you know that you can enable #fulltext #search?

Admins may optionally install full-text search. Mastodon’s full-text search allows logged-in users to find results from their own toots, their favourites, their bookmarks and their mentions.
It deliberately does not allow searching for arbitrary strings... in order to reduce the risk of abuse by people searching for controversial terms to find people to dogpile.

It means that your feed is going to be pretty boring and you are not likely to find like-minded people. There are other obvious reasons for not choosing a #server with a suspicious name, the main one being #serveradmins and users can easily impose both a #userban and a #serverban on you!

Does #mastodon do web crawls? I have 2 web apps on #pythonanywhere which get very little traffic. Since I put links to them on my profile/about I’m seeing daily GET requests to their root directories from a wide variety of instances. Why not just HEAD? That’s what Twitter did. It’s neither good nor bad. I’m just curious. Always looking to learn.

Hey, ich hätte da mal eine Frage an alle #serveradmins hier. Ich überlege mir einen #jitsi #Server aufzubauen und bei einem Anbieter hosten zu lassen. Die Frage ist, wieviel Aufwand ist die Wartung und was muss dabei alles beachtet werden bzw. was wird evtl. auch vom Anbieter übernommen?
