  1. the above mentioned book Bewilderment by #RichardPowers is a GEM.

[i don't read [cis] male authors but bc of a very good reason - and for Powers the many reasons are be-au-ti-ful writing prose, excellent techie stuff, all the best and current nature as well as climate blisses - AND horrors!], marvelous info bits about astro and space science AND [!] genious capture of [male] emotions.]

Also very much loved his book before this one, The Overstory.

  2. After I read The Overstory and Bewilderment I decided to read everything by #RichardPowers. I’m trying to spread them out amongst other stuff as treats. I’m on The Time of Our Singing now. I’ve a long way to go but I’m always amazed at how much knowledge/research goes into these books. How does this guy know so much about so many subjects?? Does he have a team to help? I’m distracted by my awe for him.

  3. I hate to say it, but I'm about to give up on #RichardPowers "Gold bug variations". I absolutely loved #Overstory and #Bewildered, and mostly adored #Playground.

But this one is dense. Lots of complex sentences and non-stop clever metaphors. I find myself re-reading pages several times to understand them. The story and characters feel secondary to the allusions and florid description.

10% in, and that may be my limit :/

  4. "Before the earth,

    before the moon,
    before the stars,

    before the sun,

    before the sky,
    even before the sea,

there was only time and Ta'aroa.

Ta'aroa made Ta'aroa. Then he made an egg that could house him."

  7. Richard Powers' new novel is dedicated to his sister, who died in 2022. Playground plunges us into the complex and frequently unfamiliar world of the ocean with a radical purpose: forest and ocean are not merely backdrop but a way of decentring the human, of insisting that if fiction limits itself to an anthropocentric universe, it severely limits its potential.

  8. A good story

The best arguments in the world won’t change a single person’s mind. The only thing that can do that is a good story.

  9. Waited and waited until the right time to read #RichardPowers #TheOverstory and am so glad I did. Started it this morning and am already floored.

I would have enjoyed it at any time but I'm in the right headspace to really connect with it - everything in its right place and all that.

Will use this as a root thread for thoughts along the way.

  11. The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut (1922–2007). Cover Art for the 1959 Dell first paperback printing, and the frontispiece for the 1990 Masterpieces of Science Fiction series from The Easton Press by Richard M. Powers (1921-1996). Plus an amusing note from Vonnegut about Powers.
