  1. @MortonRobD @cstross

In 1978 our 'little' Gould SEL minis had 32767 words of memory (32-bit words), plus a FPS vector processor (think rudimentary GPU, but for signal processing) with its own 32k words of memory, with an 80Mb hard drive the size of a washing machine. Hanging off all that were the usual tape drives, card reader, line printer, and so on.

The 'pipelined microcode' used in the FPS box was the most fun I've ever had at or near machine-code level, as you could do multiple instructions per clock as long as you primed the pipeline before and remembered to empty it after.

    Happy bloody days.

  2. Was going through old physical photos, weeding out all the old 'nameless landscape and mountain' shots, prints with people on them that I now have no recollection of.... etc, as one does at this time of year.

Found this interesting one - that's my desk at work back in '96. The IBM tower behind the desk was the TV station's web server. The hardware stack on top was the ISDN connection to our ISP. At that time, local ISP's didn't offer web hosting of the kind we wanted/needed.

If you want a giggle, check out the Wayback Machine snapshot of the site.

    Heh, the system specs:
'Our webserver is an IBM PC Server 320 with 3 gigabytes of hard disk space, 156 megabytes of RAM, running on an Intel Pentium 90mhz processer (with the ability to upgrade to dual Pentiums).'

  9. Lotus 1-2-3 was a groundbreaking spreadsheet software program released in 1983 by Lotus Development Corporation. It combined three key features—spreadsheet, database, and graphics—which revolutionized business computing during the 1980s. Dominating the market in the 1980s and early 1990s, it set the standard for productivity software until Microsoft Excel overtook it in popularity.

  12. "How it all began"

I saw an ad for this CD set at a very low price in a computer magazine. I decided to give it a try, enticed by the low cost and this 'alternative solution to Windows', and in late 1996 I ordered this set.
When it arrived, I was fascinated (having never used a Unix or Unix-like system before) but a bit daunted by the lack of support for the main applications I knew. A few months later, though, I decided to give it another go and from that point, I never looked back. Whether it was Linux, one of the BSDs, or something similar (but Unix or Unix-like), I was not going back to systems like Windows.

My #ThrowbackThursday today is probably one of the most significant in my computing life.
