  1. Today Microsoft #Excel differences on Windows to macOS (missing menus just ribbon) got me thinking: can I not just run a #SpreadSheet in the #Linux #terminal for basic data work and visualisation?

I want something akin to the original text only #Lotus123 (which I used for school work on DOS), but ideally with in-terminal graphics for #DataViz.

There is github.com/andmarti1424/sc-im (must self compile, not trivial), several apparently abandoned tools like syntax-k.de/projekte/teapot/ - and multiple vibe-coded rust tools I'd rather avoid...

    Suggestions please?

Yes but #computers were fun in those days.

Everybody was either head over heels about what you could do with #Lotus123 or writing their own #Basic programs, or sometimes #Pascal, at home during the weekend.

I worked in a consulting engineering office and we would all get together on Mondays to show off our weekend creations!

Later, when #MicrosoftWord came along you could secretly program a friend’s computer to do crazy things when a common QA phrase was typed. For instance ISO9000 could be replaced with.” hey guys! I brought all my goldfish to work this morning in my underpants.!”

I am proud with the fact that I 'wasted' my teenage years with MS-DOS, Windows 3.11, Netware, WordStar, Lotus123 and some other fantastic software.

  16. Ah, the world was clearly clamoring for a Lotus 1-2-3 #reboot 🤔—because who wouldn't want a #spreadsheet that feels like it's stuck in the '80s but pretends to speak Excel? 🕹️ Apparently, #GitHub thinks this is #innovation, while the rest of us are still trying to figure out how to navigate their labyrinth of features. 🔍

The best post I've read this year! Currently learning how to do spreadsheets with Lotus 1-2-3 Release 4 for DOS (multiple worksheets per file is non-negotiable.)

  28. 🚀🎩 Oh look, a thrilling 33-minute ode to a fossilized spreadsheet—Lotus 1-2-3—because apparently, we're desperate for #nostalgia over functional software. Next, let's pine for dial-up modems and floppy disks, because who needs progress when you’ve got vintage tech? 🙄📉

  32. RE: mastodon.social/@stonetoolsblo

I've been good friends with #VisiCalc over the past five years, but I've always turned my nose up at #Lotus123 for some reason. "Thinks he's so special. He's not special. Just a copycat wannabe jerk and..." well, I'll save all that for therapy.

I finally broke down and learned it, and you know what? I didn't hate it. I liked it, even. Maybe I even... loved it?!
