Von Lotus Software bis Orlando: Rückblicke auf eine verpasste Zukunft #TenYearsAfter #2016
Gerade ist es in einigen Blogs Mode, 10 Jahre zurückzuschauen. Ich habe das dann auch mal in meinem Blog gemacht, musste den Kopf schütteln, manchmal schmunzeln, aber auch durchaus zustimmend nicken. Deshalb hier der erste Teil von Ten Years After. I’m going home. Nach Orlando, nicht nach Woodstock.
Marketing für IBM Collaboration Solutions – Lotusphere in Orlando
2016 (und schon vorher) war ich für das Marketing der Lotus-Produkte – da hieß der Bereich dann schon IBM Collaboration Solutions – in Deutschland zuständig. Dass ich vermarkte, merkt man auch vielen Artikeln dieser Zeit an, wobei ich hoffentlich nicht zu rosarot gemalt habe.
Ältere werden Lotus noch durch Lotus Notes, die Mutter aller Groupware-Produkte, kennen. Am 4. Januar 2016 publizierte ich einen Blogbeitrag, wie ich mit meinem Arbeitsplatz (bei IBM) in die Cloud umgezogen bin. Webbasierte E-Mails namens IBM Verse lösen bei mir den „Fat Client“ von Notes ab.
Ich schreibe über IBM Connections, eine Lösung, in der alle Module zur Zusammenarbeit integriert waren: Blogs, Wikis, Communities, Activities, Files und Profile. Leider hat es IBM nie geschafft, die Lösung vernünftig zu vermarkten und technologisch auf eine homogene Plattform zu stellen. Connections ist bis heute – auch im Vergleich mit SharePoint – meiner Ansicht nach die beste Lösung, mit der ich gearbeitet habe. Leider nur vom Ansatz her …
Im Jahr 2016 fand die Lotusphere aka IBM Connect nicht mehr im legendären Swan & Dolphins statt – das Bild muss aber sein.Während dieser Zeit gehörte im Januar/Februar immer eine Reise zur Lotusphere, später IBM Connect nach Orlando zum Ritual. Dort trafen sich die Lotus-Community lange Zeit im „Swolfin“ (den beiden Hotels Swan und Dolphin). Ich denke gerne an diese Zeiten zurück. Im Blog sind dazu viele Berichte zu finden. Damals wurde auch schon über Künstliche Intelligenz am Arbeitsplatz und im Unternehmen, über Watson gesprochen, aber keine Sorge: Kein Marketing-Sprech, sondern Erinnerungen an tolle Abende mit Henry und Jörg, mit Mini und Micky, mit Babs, Peter (den „Schut“), Tom und vielen anderen lieben Kolleginnen und Kollegen in dieser aufregenden Stadt Orlando.

Damals kochte die Flüchtlingspolitik so richtig hoch und ich zitiere die taz, ob man denn Menschen einfach vor unseren Grenzen sterben lassen kann. Einige Tage später zitiere ich die negativen Erfahrungen eines Bekannten, stehe aber zu unseren humanitären Werten, weise aber auch darauf hin, dass ich Flüchtlinge an unsere Regeln halten müssen. Wenn nicht, müssen sie gehen, so mein Tenor. Damals fing es so richtig an.
Schon damals heiß diskutiert: Meinungsdiktatur in Deutschland. Nein, gab es nicht und es gibt sie auch heute nicht.
Ach ja: damals habe ich noch Kolleginnen und Kollegen ermutigt, als Markenbotschafter auf Social Media aktiv zu sein und mehr oder weniger kluge Ratschläge gegeben.

How is #Apple #iCloud sync still so bad.
Especially for #Safari tab groups. I regularly have the problem that when switching between devices the tabs are not synced. Worse, in these cassette old status is then syncretic all other devices.In my world, syncing has been solved before I entered the IT industry in the early 90s - more tha 30 years ago! I started using #LotusNotes with version 3.3 in 1993 and syncing just worked - for multiple users, distributed and with minimal bandwidth.

I vaguely remember that. I kinda liked ccMail. And while I made fun of it a lot at the time, #LotusNotes was a lot better than some of the things that came afterward. ;)

@rl_dane #LotusNotes still lives! An outfit called HCL bought Domino (https://www.hcl-software.com/domino), Notes (https://hcl-software.com/notes), and other apps from #IBM a few years ago.

Also, Lotus Notes: email, calendar, contacts, and a bespoke application platform all-in-one.
I remember laughing my head off in 2013 when I realized I'd never have to use it again, but in retrospect, it was much better than Outlook and Web apps in many ways.

I think I have to make a statement.
I liked working with #NovellNetware - versions 3 and 4.
I’m a big fan of #LotusNotes. It was hard getting used to not having it in my toolbox.
I believe that #agile values and principles are a good foundation for organizing team work and some most frameworks are a good starting point for using them.
I like #Atlassian #Jira and #Confluence.
I love working in a well designed #OpenOfficeSpace|sAny takers?

We have released a new version of #RecurringIcalEvents - event times calculation for #icalendar in #Python. This release includes the rare case of rescheduling all future events as well as being able to edit the content of all future events. In the specification it is RANGE=THISANDFUTURE.

In the early oughts I worked for #HomeDepot in their #ITSecurity group. This autumnal equinox and first day of autumn jogged a rather interesting memory.
Mind you, this was like 2002 so I would hope to bacon they aren't still doing this but.....
Back when I was there your username was your initials + a two-digit integer in case anyone had the exact same initials as you.
So for me, my user ID was "gme01" but if someone else came around after me with the initial's "gme" they would get "gme02", etc.
If you didn't have a middle name you were given an "X" as your middle name so... "gxe01" for example.
Now, here's where things get funny (in retrospect). Every new employee got assigned a default #password as their initial password that (hopefully) they would then change.
The default password for example, if my account were created today (well, todays' date back in 2002 remember) would have been "fall24".
That's right. Your default password was the season + the two-digit year.
For the love of bacon I hope things have changed since then. LOL!
But there is one thing where I do give Home Depot quite a bit of credit though........
When I started we were running #LotusNotes. Then like everybody else we switched to #Exchange. My old coworker from my #S1 days guy by the name of Dewain Robinson was actually the guy that did the conversion of Home Depot from Lotus Notes over to Exchange.
Anyhow... so 'gme01' was my username for the mainframe, for the AIX and HP/UX servers, for Active Directory, for Exchange, etc. but my Email address wasn't "[email protected]". There was an alias for my [email protected].
Point being... we didn't expose our internal usernames to the outside world.
I can't tell you how many other companies I have worked at (ok, only 1 after I left Home Depot but still....) where my email address is actually my username for Active Directory.
Ugh! I hated that. Still hate that shit.

Seems everyone is in love with Smartsheet. It apparently can do everything.
Suspiciously I check the developer documentation….
Its basically updated Lotus Notes but more spreatsheety and less databasey. 🤷♂️
