Probabilities seem to be such a difficult thing for a lot of people. Having been in the IT industry for a long time, I generally consider a product's longevity and quality as good or bad by seeing how they generally fare in use. Thanks to my position, I often get to see a lot of the same product, like a big customer where everyone has specific brand and model of a laptop.
I also get to see cases where a huge number of the said devices fail in one specific way, such as a specific laptop coming with a bad batch of motherboards or something. I make a note of that and if the model is still out there, generally quietly recommend against that model if asked.
But people still want to fight me over this. "I've had one for a year and I've never had any issues with it!" they say. Well good on you, but I generally try to steer clear of time bombs. Also the whole premise of anecdotal "mine didn't break" doesn't really carry much weight to me while it's obvious what was done badly in that specific model. If 10 million were manufactured and 99% of them failed catastrophically, it would still leave plenty of people to argue theirs work just fine, you must have just abused yours. #it #itlife
