Some of the more photogenic books whose images i’ve scanned for fromoldbooks.org/ - a photo i took back in 2007.

Charles Knight’s two-volume “Old England’ on the bottom is what started it all.

Oh yes. In fact I read a bit about the history of absolute zero when this conversation started. It's fascinating to see how they estimated where the bottom of the scale was, and how they then refined that number over the centuries.

  11. I've come to the conclusion that this collection of #Schiller's #poetry was printed while the author was still alive, which boggles my mind a bit. I also managed to cobble together a plausible provenance proseandpassion.blogspot.com/2 #oldbooks #antiquarian #familyhistory #antiques

  12. It’s Weekend, Let’s Read: Anthony Trollope’s Sci-Fi #Victober #ProjectGutenberg

Frederick Waddy, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons

I’m reading through Anthony Trollope’s six volumes of the Chronicles of Barsetshire – you can check the links to the ebooks in my last year’s post here – and loving it, but for Victober I thought I would pick a more shorter, standalone book from the same author.

I came across The Fixed Period, which he wrote later in life and is considered a satirical dystopian novel. And this is so different from what he usually wrote that I got really curious and decided to pick it up. I’m still in the introduction, but I thought I would share the link to Project Gutenberg, where you can download the book. (No luck in finding it in a physical format, so thank you even more to Gutenberg volunteers!).

Also, although a satirical dystopian work, you may want to check your trigger content warnings.

The Fixed Period – Anthony Trollope can be downloaded here.

  14. It’s Friday, Let’s Read: catalogs & books

Last month, Allie Alvis (Book Historia on social media, check her website) shared two catalogs, from the Winterthur Library, that anyone can access at Internet Archive.

One is an illustrated catalog on revolving bookcases:

    Danner’s revolving book cases (1884?)

I started to search for “bookcases” at Internet Archive between 1890 and 1910 and you can also go down that rabbit hole: you’ll find long gone patents about the construction of bookshelves and even magazines with advice, like Work. If you don’t restrict by date, you can also find manuals you can borrow to also learn how to build bookcases (didn’t find a revolving one, though). From here to writing desks, like the ones used in Jane Austen’s time, and reading stands is a small step. This is quite dangerous since soon enough you’ll be thinking about buying some wood and DIY.

The other is precisely a catalog of reading stands (we now have them for ereaders, with remote control):

Holloway reading stand and dictionary holder (1892?)

And since we’re talking about books and bookcases, I’m adding to the pile two books from Project Gutenberg you can read right here, right now:

Gossip in the library by Edmund Gosse (1891). LibriVox also has the audiobook and you can read about Gosse at Wikipedia. In this collection of essays, Gosse goes through several books to talk about libraries and book collectors. You can also head to Internet Archive to check some of those books like The Herbal or General History of Plants (1633).

“Such a man is liable to great temptations. He is brought face to face with that enemy of his species, the borrower, and dares not speak with him in the gate. If he had a book-plate he would say, “Oh! certainly I will lend you this volume, if it has not my book-plate in it; of course, one makes a rule never to lend a book that has.” He would say this, and feign to look inside the volume, knowing right well that this safeguard against the borrower is there already. To have a book-plate gives a collector great serenity and self-confidence.” – Edmund Gosse

The private library, what we do know, what we don’t know, what we ought to know about our books by Arthur L. Humphreys (1897)

And I must say this is a favorite: Humphreys goes through all the aspects of creating a library. From what is a good edition to the art of reading, but also talks about the care of books and their classification, without forgetting bookcases: “The chief faults of bookcases arise from their being designed and made by men who have never used a book.”

    Have a wonderful reading weekend!

  15. It’s Friday, let’s read: Gardening for women and Frances Wolseley

Preparing The Frames At Studley College For Lady Gardeners. From the book Gardening for women

(Edited 03/08/2025: Monica was so kind to search online for the book The Countryman’s Log Book and shared the link in the comments. Thank you so much! I’m adding the link also in the post)

This week, the British Library shared a link to the online exhibition “Frances Wolseley: Gardener, activist, aristocrat” at LibraryOn, that shows the importance Wolseley had in promoting gardening as a profession for women. The exhibition is based on the special collections found in the libraries and it’s really interesting. You check it here.

Wolseley also wrote several books, now in public domain, so I thought that for the weekend I could share the links to Project Gutenberg and Internet Archive where you can download them and read them in whatever device you have (yes, even in a browser).

Gardening for Women – 1908 – a practical guide for women who wanted to follow gardening as a profession

In a College Garden – 1916 – About running a college for women gardeners

Women and the Land – 1916 – About the need to grow food during and after wartime

Gardens: their form and design – 1919 – Garden design (with beautiful illustrations, I think I’ll start with this one)

The Countryman’s Log Book – 1921 – About farming and old English traditions (It seems really interesting and is divided into months. Thank you to Monica that shared the link in the comments down below!)

She also published two more books that collected her articles published in a magazine (Some of the Smaller Manor Houses of Sussex and Historic Houses of East Sussex and their Owners). It’s not easy to find her books in paper either.

I hope you have a great weekend and happy reading!

I'm unclear as to when this all happened, as the Medievalists article is undated (my phone doesn't display a date anyway). If I find out more, I'll amend.

Can't wait to see what tidbits of thought make their way from this find into the world at large.

"There's a growing band of people digging through library stacks and second-hand bookshops in search of lost classics. I'm one of them."

Wobbuffet posted Lucy Scholes' article "Meet the archive moles" about editors surfacing worthy forgotten or overlooked books for reprint, with links to houses publishing recovered works.
