#Trump will be the next #UnitedStates president, after he was #impeached 2X & #convicted of state #crimes. He campaigned on…instituting #tariffs on most imports,…mass #deportations, rolling back #climate regulations & cracking down on #dissent.
Trump won after he campaigned on #nativist & #racist rhetoric about #immigrants. He spent his campaign trying to convince voters that their financial livelihoods were better when he was in office [despite inheriting Obama’s economy & then tanking it]. -
It had a particularly harsh toll on #refugees from #Syria, indefinitely suspending their resettlement (which #Trump considered “detrimental to the interests of the United States,” despite America’s role in the conflict). But, more so, it showed the extent to which the new admin would make its #nativist agenda real.

Today Republicans rehash similar tropes to justify harsh immigration policy and whip up #nativist #panic.
Out of all the outlandish claims at the presidential debate between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, perhaps the most absurd was Trump’s exclamation that Haitian migrants in Springfield, Ohio, were #eating #dogs
Not only is that a racist lie -- It’s also a part of a long history of anti-Haitianism across the United States and Western hemisphere.

It will always be the case that most migrants lacking leave to remain will be those who arrived legally on tourist visas & simply failed to leave again....the boat people thing is just #showBoating to the #farRight by #toriesOut desperate for all the #nativist votes they can get

I often think of this observation from #LBJ:
“If you can convince the lowest white man he's better than the best colored man, he won't notice you're picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he'll empty his pockets for you.”
It explains so much about the rise in #nativist / #nationalist / #racist con-artistry — in the US, of course, but everywhere where politicians rely on #scapegoating to bolster their popularity and power.

Numbers from polls might suggest #labourLandslide - but who beleives that will happen? There are many #shyTories - embarrassed by recent performance from admitting their allegiance, but still vote Tory in large numbers#starmer has an issue with both #farLeft - upset by centrist talk & treatment of #corbyn - & #EUdiehards - disappointed he is not promising the impossible
What might give a big majority would be if #Farage recharged #Reform / #UKIP & siphoned off #nativist votes
