My birthday was yesterday, hooray for India’s Independence Day and the peak summer holidays Feast of the Assumption in France and Italy.

I have been in Sydney to see The Drover’s Wife at Sydney Opera House with a talk before the show by Leah Purcell. Big recommend, important story told well in a beautiful format. Even better when you get to see a good show with a great friend.

Also got to catch buses, regional trains, suburban trains, and ferries.

The harbour view was from my apartment window.

My dear Students of India,

I write to you on this Independence Day. My message is simple and direct.

This is our 80th anniversary of India’s freedom [1]. Seventy nine years ago, on this day, our country stepped out of colonial rule. Those who came before us paid a heavy price for that freedom. Their struggle gives this day its weight. It also places a clear duty on every generation that follows.

I pass on more than a date of freedom. I pass on the duty to turn formal freedom into something people live every day.

Sacrifice and refusal once brought freedom. The work that remains needs effort from you. Choose truth instead of stories that make things easy. Choose real skill instead of empty show. Choose the lasting good of most people instead of short benefits for a few.

History keeps every mark we leave. Every policy leaves a mark. Every silence leaves a mark. Every act of courage leaves a mark. Every act of convenience leaves a mark. These marks become the ground you will walk on.

Independence is not only about celebration. It shows when you face your own record honestly. It shows when you change direction quietly, without making a show of it. It shows when you build institutions that last longer than any single government or generation.

You have the power to shape what comes next. The work continues. The baton now rests in your hands.

From one who belongs to the generation that came before.

A BetTER Day

Independence has its day,
when o’er the skies fireworks display,
and dependence, too, is good,

learn the grace of being held,

a deeper word, a wider frame.

Then add three letters, soft but true,
TER arrives and makes it new.

In-TER-dependence names the art
