  2. "Protesters in Salinas join nationwide shutdown against ICE”—Report by Chris Hamilton, #MontereyHerald

“This is the salad bowl of the world. There’s a lot of farmworkers here,” said Victoria Gomez, a lifelong Salinas resident at the city hall protest. “These people that are here, planting and harvesting vegetables and fruits for us and for the rest of the country. I think they at least deserve some respect enough to speak up for them.”

  7. Very cool! A 20-minute parade of hundreds of energized, chanting, whistle-blowing student protesters out on the streets this afternoon. 💪🏽

  8. Happy #GeneralStrike day, for those with the ability or privilege to participate.

The general strike is being organized through #NationalShutdown, a decentralized grassroots movement across multiple cities. The national strike is a continuation of the statewide strike that occurred in Minnesota on January 23.

General strikes, without forward planning, are difficult. In a country where almost half the population is facing some level of food insecurity, asking minimum wage workers to not work, is a lot.

For today, if you can honor the strike, that’s fantastic. Thank you. If you have capital to spare, please donate to the orgs created to help people who are striking. If you can’t strike on short notice, withhold your capital. #Boycott #billionaires.

Looking forward, let’s work on plans to support ourselves and our people during longer actions. I love y’all, We got this. See you in the streets. 💃🏻

  16. CW: uspol, actionable

FYI, seems there's another general shutdown planned for this Friday, January 30, called for by organizations in Minnesota. Not sure how well-known/widespread last week's one was. But continuing a walkout weekly is probably better than the intermittent walkouts.

Unofficial walkouts put vulnerable workers at risk. So find and join your union if you haven't yet, and keep organizing, informing, supporting. Grad student unions count.
