  6. "About 12 percent of Monterey County’s oil and gas wells are located within 200 feet of a river or creek. This includes the Salinas River, which runs through the San Ardo oil field, and is a critical source of the county’s groundwater.

"In December 2025, over 4,000 gallons of oil and toxic wastewater spilled in the San Ardo oil field, just over a mile from where the Sargent Creek feeds the Salinas River. It is unconfirmed whether that spill was connected to an active or idle well.”

“This is the salad bowl of the world. There’s a lot of farmworkers here,” said Victoria Gomez, a lifelong Salinas resident at the city hall protest. “These people that are here, planting and harvesting vegetables and fruits for us and for the rest of the country. I think they at least deserve some respect enough to speak up for them.”

  31. We follow @Doug_Bostrom re: climate change. And we’ve been taking a break from nat’l & int’l news (vital to continue being able to do what we can to help our country & planet).

We paused for 6/27 Atlantic article scicomm.xyz/@Doug_Bostrom/1147. We were already aware of shameful treatment of California landscaper Narciso Barranco & that his children include 3 USMC sons (1 a veteran, 2 still active duty).

This news especially demands our attn as a resident of Monterey County & daughter, sis, mom of vets in an interracial, interethnic family.

Monterey County has 439K+ people; 60.4% identify as Hispanic/Latino, majority live in #SalinasValley, Salad Bowl of America. Those who serve in military are widely unacknowledged—unless killed while serving, like Vilmar Galarza Hernandez (pictured) & others, e.g., bikemonterey.org/five-monterey.

Pray for peace. And"when you pray, move your feet!” In whatever way you are called, if you are an American, we hope you are resisting this “new normal” of 47—not normal at all.

"This year marks 20th year for the Fuller Center for Housing and 17th year for the Center’s Bicycle Adventure ride, but first time the trip came through #Salinas Valley, as #BigSur highway closures meant an inland detour was necessary….St. Mark’s Episcopal Church provided overnight shelter for the group so they could get rest and eat in #KingCity."

“'These farmlands are fascinating, and I will never look at a jar of strawberry preserves [the same] again,” said Andy Simpson, who... had never before seen #agriculture on the scale of #MontereyCounty fields. 'The wonderful workers doing this are amazing.’

"“When you ride a bike across country and stay in #churches, you live a very simple existence,’ Asmuth said. “You realize how little in life you need to be truly content.’"

  33. When The U.S. Government Tried To Replace #Migrant #Farmworkers With #HighSchoolers

    August 23, 201810:41 AM ET
    By Gustavo Arellano

Excerpt: "He remembers the first day vividly. Work started before dawn, the better to avoid the unforgiving desert sun to come. 'The wind is in your hair, and you don't think it's bad,' Carter says. 'Then you go out in the field, and the first ray of sun comes over the horizon. The first ray. Everyone looked at each other, and said, 'What did we do?' The thermometer went up like in a Bugs Bunny cartoon. By 9 a.m., it was 110 degrees.'

"Garden gloves that the farmers gave the students to help them harvest lasted only four hours, because the cantaloupe's fine hairs made grabbing them feel like 'picking up sandpaper.' They got paid minimum wage — $1.40 an hour back then — plus 5 cents for every crate filled with about 30 to 36 fruits. Breakfast was 'out of the Navy,' Carter says — beans and eggs and bologna sandwiches that literally toasted in the heat, even in the shade.

"The University High crew worked six days a week, with Sundays off, and they were not allowed to return home during their stint. The farmers sheltered them in 'any kind of defunct housing,' according to Carter — old Army barracks, rooms made from discarded wood, and even buildings used to intern Japanese-Americans during World War II.

"Problems arose immediately for the #ATEAM nationwide. In California's #SalinasValley, 200 teenagers from #NewMexico, #Kansas and #Wyoming quit after just two weeks on the job. 'We worked three days and all of us are broke,' the Associated Press quoted one teen as saying. Students elsewhere staged strikes. At the end, the A-TEAM was considered a giant failure and was never tried again." [Until today, apparently...]
