“When ideas are crushed and dissenters are criminalised or even pathologised, the harm doesn’t stay abstract. It shows up as hunger, as homelessness, as lives cut short.

Violence isn’t always soaked in blood. Poverty, homelessness, famine; these are forms of violence. They’re structural. Someone has made sure the poor stay poor while they fatten themselves up.

A nation of sheep has a government of wolves. Those who fight for the sheep are dangerous to the wolves. Perhaps… the wolves need a reminder that, at the end of the day, they all bleed the same colour—and the river of blood enriches the soil for the sheep to graze.”

We often hear: “If Islam is enough, we don’t need feminism.” And we ask: then why are so many women still left behind; abused, unheard, erased in Islam’s name?

If Islam is truly rahmatan lil-‘alamin—a mercy to all worlds—then its justice cannot be confined to the righteous, the religious, the modest, the married, or the Muslim. It must be a source of liberation for all women; the single mother, the sex worker, the queer woman, the survivor, the non-Muslim, the neurodivergent girl who flinches at loud imams.

We are not here to compete over whether Islam or feminism has the better branding.

We are here to say:
if the roots are in tawhīd, if the trunk is justice, if the shade reaches all who are oppressed—then let it be called Islam, and may it look like feminism, taste like liberation, and walk like truth.

The point is not the name. The point is the mercy. The point is the freedom of every woman—regardless of belief, past, body, or banner.

We do not ask Islam to conform to feminism. We ask Muslims to embody the Islam that liberates.

I've never thought of myself as some kind of intellectual. But wow… my intelligence has never felt so insulted before. Subhanallah. I think I have let people get away with that a lot. The next time people project their own limitations and shortcomings onto me, clearly my civility and structured arguments at that point are serving their comfort. So I'll engage at the level they understand the moment they pull a DARVO on me by taking my critique of their frameworks and worldviews, which are influenced by the systems surrounding them, as a personal attack on their person.

I've never thought of myself as some kind of intellectual. But wow… my intelligence has never felt so insulted before. Subhanallah. I think I have let people get away with that a lot. The next time people project their own limitations and shortcomings onto me, clearly my civility and structured arguments at that point are serving their comfort. So I'll engage at the level they understand the moment they pull a DARVO on me by taking my critique of their frameworks and worldviews, which are influenced by the systems surrounding them, as a personal attack on their person.

In the Black Mirror episode "Men Against Fire," soldiers are manipulated by neural implants into seeing their targets as monstrous “roaches.” It’s a chilling metaphor for how dehumanization makes violence easier to justify—how perception can be engineered to suppress empathy.

We might not have implants in our heads, but we're still constantly fed narratives—through news media, films, and even video games like Call of Duty—that shape how we see entire groups of people. Often, they’re cast as the villain, the threat, the other.

One group that’s been persistently portrayed this way is Muslims. From headlines that link Islam to terrorism to entertainment that uses Muslim characters as stock villains, these patterns have created a distorted image. Over time, it becomes easy to forget that we're talking about real people—people with families, histories, hopes, and beliefs as varied as anyone else’s.

Just like the soldiers in Men Against Fire, many of us are trained—subtly or overtly—to look past someone’s humanity. And that’s dangerous. Because once we stop seeing people as fully human, anything can be justified.

The way forward isn’t through more fear, but through understanding. We need to question the stories we’re told, listen more deeply, and seek out voices that aren’t always handed a microphone. Only then can we begin to replace suspicion with empathy—and division with something more human.
