" paraphrased
Kevin Anderson, professor of energy and climate change at the Universities of Manchester, Uppsala and Bergen :
“The choice is between deep, rapid and fair decarbonisation of modern society, and an organised-ish technical and social revolution; or ongoing rhetoric and delay as temperatures [rise]. And then we’ll have a revolutionary style change that will be both chaotic and violent.”On nature, Nathalie Seddon, professor of biodiversity at the University of Oxford, said:
“We are facing a national emergency not only because the climate is changing, but because the living systems that protect the climate are breaking down. This isn’t about choosing between the economy and the environment. It’s about recognising that the economy is embedded within the environment, and that the health of the nation depends on the living systems that sustain us.”Tim Lenton, director of the Global Systems Institute at the University of Exeter, said that a collapse in the Atlantic meridianal overturning current (Amoc) would leave London freezing in winters of -20C, “and yet the summers would still be hotter than today’s”, leading to a situation where the UK would be 100% reliant on food imports. “We have got to do everything in our power to limit the amount of time we spend above 1.5C [above preindustrial temperatures],” Lenton said.
Richard Nugee, a retired general, said politicians focused on the threat from Russia were failing to see the greater threat of the climate crisis. “Climate change is going to be a bigger problem than Russia,” he said. “It’s an insidious threat, one that has crept up. It’s going to do more damage than the threats they’re focused on now. But all they see is a resurgent Russia.”
He said politicians needed to ensure the UK could cope with the greater extremes of weather that were already apparent and going to worsen. The lack of action to ensure that vital infrastructure is resilient was leaving the country vulnerable to extreme weather, and open to attack from enemies who could perceive this weakness.
“Having spent most of my life fighting, I need to believe this country to be strong. The last thing I want to see is this country go to war. But we are not providing a sufficient deterrent, because we are not resilient enough [to the impacts of the climate crisis],” said Nugee.

A new climate-denier movie by the same people who did the one in 2007 gets debunked here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HhAX42dT09w
37 minutes of your life....And because I don't want to derail debate by hogging attention for denial, let me now recommend a 10 minute interview with #KevinAnderson
https://climateuncensored.com/university-of-barcelona-interviews/He has just now finally joined Bluesky. https://bsky.app/profile/kevinclimate.bsky.social
Let's make him join fediscience.org, shall we?
I strongly believe, conversations around all things climate in our community with Kevin's direct input can get to a level and depth in line with the actual problem. Leave the mainstream superficial talking points. Might even be inspiring for Kevin himself, compared to what he is used to on Twix.
And him posting on Fediscience.org could have the positive impact on academia he is fighting for. -
“I'm agnostic about nuclear, but built rates mean it can only have a minor role in staying <2°C”

Hi Sebastian
I read, and listened to her own audio book reading of, some chapters and speed-read the rest last night. I also looked up some of her references.
I would love to know what #KevinAnderson, @MatthiasSchmelzer and @jasonhickel think of it.
Here's a response from Timothée Parrique on one aspect.
His comment "I just want to state for the record that there are a few arguments in the book that I find deeply problematic, sometimes scientifically inaccurate, sometimes politically naïve, or just unconvincing." resonates.
Having the e-book let me do many searches, such as 45 occurences of price and two of ice, zero of PFAS. Plastic is fine, and her proposal is to stop it flowing down rivers to the ocean, put it "deep well-managed" landfills, and to burn it for energy! Microplastics not much of a problem, nor is pollinator loss. Minerals for renewables, their mining, rifining (not mentioned), and availability not a problem either. Watch out for the use of per capita stats, trend stats, and specific country stats when the problem is actually the global total. My list of what Timothée is probably referring to above is really long!
P.S. Also this, related through the term "carbon monomania":

Ha! Fulltext search doesn't work, or not as good as on Twix.
But now I discovered that searching for parts of the URL does work.
Like for example, searching for the latest interview by #DanMiller with #KevinAnderson to see who shared the video and what did they say about it?
Works by searching for:
watch?v=tVFSJINGueMPretty nice, eh. This way, #invidious instances are included, as well, not only youtube matches.
But according to the search engine on my instance, the interview was only shared by me and one other profile. https://mastodon.world/@shonin/112086712944779282Would love to know how many results a search in your instance produces! #FollowerPower

#KevinAnderson says, #JimKea , the new chair of the #IPCC, came from working group 3, and now as chair puts the other, respectable IPCC working groups under the same delusional umbrella working group 3 has been under since the inception of IAM * .
Kevin says, Jim Kea is very much in line with last year's COP chair, and with the next COP chair – both fossil fuel executives.
He also says, WG3 is Exxon in disguise.
Kevin also scolds academia for not standing up and speaking out against Jim's fairy tales.
Tune in at about 30:00 . Before that, they speak of carbon budgets.
https://yewtu.be/watch?v=tVFSJINGueM* IAM, integrated assessment models. Economists stuff models with ideological assumptions "and pseudo-tech". 😁

"The final text from COP28 is a death knell for the stronger 1.5°C commitment of the #ParisAgreement and even puts the much weaker 2°C obligation on critical life-support.
No doubt there will be lots of cheer and back-slapping among many pontificators and even some climate ‘experts’, but the physics will not care.
We face a climate emergency that the COP process appears simply unwilling or unable to address”

@Snoro Yup, the North will have to cut their carbon emission while we give some slack to the global south for infrastructure building, given the cumulative emission (hence the actual 420 ppm) are mostly from white skinned people. This is called equity. #KevinAnderson #TheGreatSimplification #NateHagens #ClimateEquity

I wish all the Irish newspapers would get together and invite the climate scientist Kevin Anderson to give a talk on the danger of climate collapse to all their journalists, so they'd stop talking about coffee cups and similarly fluffy things, and start writing about cars and driving, and about insulation - transport and home heating being out main climate-harm contributions

«I have to be honest and say as someone who has worked on climate change for years, my best guess is that we are going to fail. But it is a choice to fail. Political leaders, academia and journalism have repeatedly chosen to fail on #climate for 30 years» -#KevinAnderson
"We" have chosen to fail, or "they" have chosen to fail?
Simply put: +3 or +4C, 80 years from now and ours kids will live through H. Sapiens extinction.

@Snoro Je cite #KevinAnderson (Fev. 2017) : “I'm agnostic about nuclear, but built rates mean it can only have a minor role in staying <2°C”

@bigl0af @wjmaggos I'm with #KevinAnderson on this one (well on everything in fact)... he tweeted: "I'm agnostic about nuclear, but built rates mean it can only have a minor role in staying <2°C" ie we can't built nuclear reactors fast enough to avoid a runaway climate. Even France during its peak deployment rate (early 1980) didn't build more than 7 reactors/yr. Would the US undergo a complete conversion to nucular, it would need 3000 of them. So, don't bother...
